Ik sitaar ke do taar

Posted on: April 10, 2013

“Garib” (1942), by now a forgotten movie, was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The movie had Surendranath, Veena Kumari, Rose, Agha etc in it.

Here is a rare song from this obscure movie. This song is sung by Surendra. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anil Biswas.

Only the audio of this song is available. Seeing that Surendra figures in the cast, it can be guessed that the song was picturised on Surendra himself.

The audio is not very clear and I have not been able to get several words while noting down the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to point out the missing/ correct words in the lyrics.

Song-Ik sitaar ke do taar (Garib)(1942) Singer-Surendra, Lyrics-Pt Indra Chandra, MD-Anil Biswas

Ik sitaar ke do taar
ik sitaar ke do taar
ik gareeb ik gharbaar(?)
ik sitaar ke do taar
ik gareeb ek ghar baar(?)
ho ik sitaar ke do taar
ho ik sitaar ke do taar

ye taar ?? ke taar
ye taar ?? ke taar
bina mile ?? jaayen
?? phalon ??
bina mile “”?? jaayen
?? phalon ??
mil jul kar sangeet rachaayen
swarg bane sansaar
mil jul kar sangeet rachaayen
swarg bane sansaar
ik sitaar ke do taar
ik sitaar ke do taar
dukh hi dukh hai
dukh hi dukh hai
sukh lene mein
dukh hi dukh hai
sachha sukh hai
sukh dene mein
dukh hi dukh hai
sukh lene mein
dukh hi dukh hai
apna haath badha do unko
aaye jo haath pasaar
apna haath badha do unko
aaye jo haath pasaar
ik sitaar ke do taar
ik sitaar ke do taar
ek gareeb ik gharbaar (?)
ik sitaar ke do taar
ho ik sitaar ke do taar

Atul ji,

Gareeb-1942 had 2 MDs.
Anil Biswas had composed 7 songs-all sung by Surendra as solos.
Ashok Ghosh had composed the remaining 5 songs, 3 by Veena,1 by Surendra and 1 by Miss Rose.
Except the above song, all other songs were written by Dr.Safdar ‘Aah”
Seetapuri.
Veena had sung meerabai’s Bhajan- Aeri main to prem diwani.

The missing words here are likely :

ik sitaar ke do taar
ik gareeb ik ‘ sardaar ‘

ye taar ‘ phalon ‘ ke taar
bina mile ‘ jhoote pad ‘ jaayen

‘gareeb’ is the weakling who has no place , to get a hearing.
‘sardaar’ is the leader, powerful and heard by everyone.

I dont know if ‘sitaar’ has such different ‘taars’. But he poet seems to be saying this.

Another alternative would be ‘ghardaar’ . As opposed to ‘gareeb’, poor and alone, ‘ghardaar’ is someone who owns a house and family.
