I had not heard the name of the film BEETE DIN (1947). What prompted me to know about this film was a song ‘arshon pe sitaara hai wo’ from this film which is sung by Mukesh and M A Rauf (Osmania), one of the two music directors in the film. The song’s composition is somewhat different than what one usually finds in most of Hindi film songs. There is no repetition of lines of mukhda in the antaras. The tune is more or less the same for both the mukhda and antaras.

For some artists, it is never any effort on this blog to search new songs and track numbers posted. Their numbers continue to keep incrementing, just in the process of posting as it is. Some names are really apparent. Rafi Sb, Lata ji, Asha ji, Kishore Da etc. And hence, their milestones continue to occur, as a matter of routine, whatever may be the other compulsions to add new posts. (As I commented in an earlier post, the number of songs of Kishore Da showcased here seems proportionately lesser, only because he made his volumes in the 70s and 80s, and we have on this blog traditionally been focusing on the decades prior to that.)

Looking for old songs picturized in the desert, I was about to give up, and thought of switching to ‘dessert’ songs instead. 🙂 I have some more newer desert songs in my list, which I absolutely will discuss, having only explored the desert of Rajashtan, bhuj etc. What with Egypt and even Arizona dersert featuring in some songs, there is a lot still left to be covered. But listening to all those new songs, I got a little bored. Today I was thinking of taking a break from this series and discussing some thing else. That was when I found this Lata-Rafi duet from film “Sehra- 1963′. And ‘ sone pe suhaaga ‘ I found a Rafi solo too , not yet discussed in the blog, picturized in the desert. And hero is singing this song while performing acrobatics riding a Camel, no less. So this is what I call a desert-cum-dessert song. 🙂

“Baghdad” (1961) was a Southern Movies production. It was directed by T R Sundaram. The movie had M. G. Ramchandran, Vyjyantimala, Gopal Krishna, T. S. Balliah, Nambiar, Sandhya, Helen etc in it. That makes it one of the rare movies where M G Ramchandran was seen in a Hindi movie. I wonder if it was a dubbed movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie.

The song I have chosen for discussion is a Mukesh-Shamshad duet ‘moti chugne gayi re hansi maansarovar teer’ from the film ‘CHHEEN LE AZAADI (1947) which I have been all along assuming to have already beencovered in the blog. Now I find that this duet is yet to be discussed in the blog. The reason for my erroneous assumption was that some time back our dear Sudhir had taken up the mission of posting Mukesh songs pertaining to 1940s.

When one talks of a movie called “Chaandni”, one normally means the Vinod Khanna, Sri Devi starrer movie of 1989.
It turns out that a movie of this title was released as far back as in 1942 as well.
