Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Din jaa rahe hain

Posted on: May 20, 2013

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The failure of Doosri Sita(1974) at the box-office resulted in the disappearance of the good musical score of this film from the collective memory. My favourite from this film is this highly melancholic background song.

I heard this song for the first time in the late 80s on an audio-cassette with Gulzar songs. The dramatic introduction led me to think that it is a ghost song. The advent of youtube brought the real situation to light. This is a background-song about the travails of a suffering woman at the hands of her husband (Raza Murad ?) and mother-in-law (who else but Lalita Pawar). This is but just an intermediate station to the whole tragedy.

Pacifist Immer, who has posted some guest posts on my blog helped me with the lines “apne saleeben aap hi uthaaye”. Thank you, Pacifist!

Song-Din jaa rahe hain (Doosri Sita)(1974) Singer- Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

din jaa rahe hain
ke raaton ke saaye
apne saleeben aap hi uthhaaye
din jaa rahe hain
ke raaton ke saaye
apne saleeben aap hi uthhaaye
din jaa rahe hain
ke raaton ke saaye

jab koi doobaa
raaton ka saaya
koi saveraa
waapas na aayaa
waapas jo aaye
veeraan saaye
din jaa rahe hain
ke raaton ke saaye

jeenaa to koi
mushkil nahin thhaa
magar doobne ko
saahil nahin thha
saahil se koi
ab to bulaaye
din jaa rahe hain
ke raaton ke saaye

saanson ki dori
chhoote na toote
zara zindagi se
daaman to chhoote
koi zindagi ke
haath na aaye
din jaa rahe hain
ke raaton ke saaye
apne saleeben aap hi uthhaaye
din jaa rahe hain
