Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O paise tu Bhagwaan nahin

Posted on: May 20, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The song under discussion today is from the funny film, “Main shadi karne Chala”-62, sung by manna Dey and Mohammad Rafi.

While Music Directors considered Rafi for ALL types of songs, be it a classical, bhajan, naat, qawawali, love, comedy, fun or sad song, they typedcast Manna Dey only for Classical, Bhajan or songs where a high pitch was required. Actually Manna Dey has sung ALL types of songs viz. Bhajan, qawwaali, Ghazal, love, sad, comedy, classical and any other type of songs. There are songs by Manna Dey in all Genres and he has sung with all female singers, still the ‘branding’ never changed.

Manna Dey sang about 3500 songs in all, and Rafi sang 4500 in all. When I opted for this song, I was curious to know how many songs these two stalwarts have sung together. I started my search and I ended up with 60 songs sung by these two singers from 1950 to 1977.

It is a delight to hear their duets.

Coming to the film- “Main shadi karne chala” was a very fun filled and hilarious film. The story was quite funny, based on the famous Marathi film ” AKHER JAMALE “-1952. It had Raja Gosavi and Sharad Talwalkar as two heroes. The Marathi film had broken all Box office records in those days.

This Hindi film had a very good plot, providing lot of scope for comedy, but somehow the Director seemed to have missed the bus. Actually the Director, Roop K Shoey was a “Purana Khiladi ” for comedy films, but this film could not succeed much. While seeing this film, one is reminded of ” Barretts of Wimpole Street ” a play by Rudolph Besseir and the film based on it, as well as Jane Austen’s ” Pride and Prejudice” . This is because the film is a mixture of all these. Later on several Hindi films as well as TV shows were made on the same theme. Although this was a 1962 film, I had seen it in 1970, during itssecond run. By that time the actors in it had established themselves inthe Hindi Film industry.

The cast was, I S Johar, Rajendranath, Firoz Khan, Prem Chopda, Vivek, Sayeed Khan, Mumtaz, Malika, Tabassum, Praveen Chaudhary, Manju etc.

The story was…

The film is set in the beautiful Kashmir. Deepak(I S Johar) has a Photo Studio on a Houseboat in Jhelum river, along with his friend Raja(Rajendranath). Deepak loves Seema (Sayeeda Khan) a daughter of Janakidas (Badri Prasad) and Jankibai (Durga Khote).

When Deepak goes to Janakidas with the marriage proposal, he is flatly refused- the reason being that Seema-the youngest of the five sisters-can not get married unless her four elder sisters get married.

So, Seema and Deepak decide to first fix their marriages.

All these sisters are of different tastes. Vidya (Praveen Chaudhary) is a writer and Language specialist, the next Menaka (Tabassum) is a Dancer, the next is Ragini (Malika) who is a Singer and the last Lily (Mumtaz) is a Sports person. All of them want husbands of their tastes only.

After many comedy episodes, Deepak and Seema find grooms- Prakash (Prem Chopra), Ashok (Vivek), Kewal (Firoz Khan) and Raja (Rajendra Kumar).

The girls also agree to marry them. However Kewal announces that he has a widowed sister Shyama (Manju) and that she has to get married first before Kewal.

All the pairs now start looking for a groom for Shyama.

Meanwhile, there is some misunderstanding between Seema and Deepak and Seema goes away from the house into a hailstorm and snow. Deepak finds her out and save her from a landslide.

Meanwhile Shyama also gets a groom.

All the six marriages take place in one Pandal and at one time only.

Prem chopra looks very cute in this film, much before he established himself as a Villain and saying…” Mera naam hai Prem…Prem Chopda”. Feroz Khan, Mumtaz and her sister Malika (who later married the wrestler and film Hero Randhawa-brother of Dara Singh ) look very young and charming in this film.

Here is a song from this film for which the Lyrics were by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music was composed by Chitragupta.

Song-O Paise tu Bhagwan nahin (Main Shaadi Karne Chala)(1962) Singers-Rafi, Manna Dey, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics

O paise tu bhagwaan nahin
par gun tujhmein bhagwaan ke hain
O paise tu bhagwaan nahin
par gun tujhmein bhagwaan ke hain
O paise

wo bhi taqdeer banaata hai
tujhse bhi bigdi banti hai
wo bhi taqdeer banaata hai
tujhse bhi bigdi banti hai
wo sabko roti deta hai
tujhse bhi poori chhanti hai

dono ke
dono ke dar tak jaate hain
raste jitne insaan ke hain
O paise tu bhagwan nahin
Par gun tujhmein bhagwaan ke hai
O paise

ho tujhse khanakti jeb to phir
begaane ko bhi pyaar aaye
ho tujhse khanakti jeb to phir
begaane ko bhi pyaar aaye
Khushiyaan rut kya soorat pe teri
deewaane ko bhi pyaar aaye
pyaare tu
pyaare tu agar ho paass to phir
anjaane bhi Pehchaan ke hain

O paise tu bhagwan nahin
par gun tujhmein bhagwan ke hai
O paise

Allah ki masjid mein pandit
ruk jaane se inkaar kare
Allah ki masjid mein pandit
ruk jaane se inkaar kare
Bhagwaan ke mandir mein mulla
jhuk jaane se inkar kare
paise pe
paise pe magar sab jhukte hain

bande jitne eman ke hai
O paise tu bhagwan nahin
Par gun tujhmein bhagwan ke hain
O paise

Thanks, Arunji, for another informative post. Looks like this might be a fun movie to watch.

Btw, I am really surprised that Manna Dey has sung 3500 songs as compared to Rafi saab’s 4500. I would have thought Rafi saab must have sung at least five times more number of songs than Manna Dey, considering how often one hears Rafi saab on radio! 🙂 Maybe it is more a perception issue for me.

Would be great to see if we can get all their duets on this blog. 🙂 For that matter, it would be nice to also get other male-male or female-female duets on the blog. We are so used to male-female duets that this would come as a welcome change.

One Talat-Rafi saab duet that readily to mind (and has already been posted) is Gham ki andheri raat mein (Sushila). I love this song. Any idea how many duets this pair sang together?

Raja ji,
1. Thanks for liking the post.
2. Rafi primarily sang for major and main Heroes like,Dilip,Rajendra,Sunil,Shammi,Ashok,Bharat Bhushan, pradeep,Johnny walker etc, whose films were popular and hence his songs were heard more frequently. manna Dey sang for
second degree heroes like mahipal etc,Bhajans, religious films etc. These were not the popular films hence his songs were less heard on Radio and elsewhere
3. The no of songs sung by Lata,Asha or Rafi is a sensitive and contentious issue. There are various numbers by various groups.I personally think Rafi sang about 5000 songs, because such a list is available on line.
4. Rafi and Talat sang very few songs. I know of only 5 songs, where only these two sang-
a. Aadmi-68 kaisi haseen aaj…Posted here already
b. Kavi-54 kavita naam hai gyaanka..
c. Laila Majnu-55 Bhar de jholi allah naam…Posted here
d. Madhur Milan-55 kabhi aansoo behte
e. Sushila-66 Gham ki andheri…Posted here.
There are songs where Rafi and Talat sang with few others as a group song-
Babul-50
Baarish-57
Hakikat-64 and
Love and God-85
It is likely that there are more songs which I do not know, from duet and group songs. readers are requested to add,if there are anymore.

Arunji,

what would be the total number of songs for Rafi/Mukesh including everything? Based on what is listed here so far, it seems : 7 duets, 5 duets with chorus, 8 other group songs , so total 20 songs. Is that correct?

nahm ji,
According to Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji,the compiler of Mukesh Geet Kosh, there are only

14. Lo Ji Fauji Mauj Mein..O Jatta Aayi Baisakhi Imaan Dharam 1977 Mohd Rafi, Mukesh

Even with chorus, the song is duet only as there are only two singers mentioned. I meant those songs also as duets.

Samjhauta(1973) has a multiple version song ‘ badi door se aaye hain’, Rafi solo and Rafi-Mukesh Duet. Two movies “Bijli” 1950 and ‘Imaan Dharam” 1977 are missing from the movies listed by you.

Thanks for feedback, Mr Deshmukh. Sad version of Saat Ajube Is Duniya Mein is obviously sung in a different mood/tone and is specified explicitly as a different song on Dharam Veer Vinyl LP. The popular excel sheet that is available online also lists it as a separate song but incorrectly specifies it as a Solo song of Mohd Rafi.

Regards.
