This is a song from Bhai Bhai-1956. It was famous not only as an entertainer, but also for its wonderful songs. Bhai Bhai-56 was one of those films of Madan Mohan which was Popular and a Hit film. Though Madan Mohan’s music was always appreciated by the experts, not many of his films were successful.
Bhai Bhai was an AVM film from Madras and obviously a remake of a successful south film ( Chelle Pillai-1954). A V Meiappan was a very shrewd producer and knew what constituted a hit film. He created an Empire from Zero and luckily, after his departure, his progeny also continued with the winning streak.
In the Hindi film industry, every artist is categorised. In fact, it is a typical Indian mentality. We like to do Branding for evrybody and everything. Thus,an artist branded as a comedian,say Rajendranath,for Example,does acting contrary to his image, it will not be acceptable to the audience. If Rajendranath delivers a very serious dialogue, people will first laugh-out of habit-at his dialogue as something funny !
Nimmi,the 50’s delicate Heroine was branded as a weeping doll.In most of her films,she had roles which required her to suffer, do sacrifice and weep in every alternate scene etc. Very rarely you would find her in a comic situation, laughing etc. Even if she got 1 or 2 such scenes, it would be followed by 10 or 20 scenes where she will feel comfortable weeping !
Nimmi was originally,NAWAB BANO. She was the daughter of the singer actress Waheedan Bai. Mehboob had marked her for his future films. Nimmi used to visit the sets of ANDAZ during its shooting. When she saw the Bob Cut of Nargis, she also cut her hair like Nargis. Raj kappor noticed her and took her as the heroine of Premnathin BARSAAT. Raj kapoor did not like her name Nawab bano and was planning to change it for screen.
In Hindi films,90% of the artistes have either adopted New screen names ( Yousuf Khan became Dilip kumar) or adapted their names to suit the screen presence (Ranbir Raj Kapoor became just Raj kapoor).
AAG was Raj kapoor’s first production. in that film he has a girlfriend called Nirmala. In the film he calls her Nimmi. Later when ,in the film, Nargis and Kamini Kaushal come in his life, he calls them as NIMMI too. Raj Kapoor baptised this new girl Nawab Bano as NIMMI-which became her parmanent name.
incidentally, while on the topic of naming, there is an interesting story about Dilip kumar also. In 1940, Yousuf Khan was working in a Bombay Talkies film. He was given a choice of 3 names- Jahangir, Vasudev and Dilip as his new screen names. He was confused, hedid not like any of these names, but then Devika Rani finalised DILIP KUMAR as his new screen name and it became permanent.
Nimmi had done lead roles with most big stars like Dilip, Raj and Dev, Premnath, Ajit etc, but she did five films with Dilip Kumar-Aan, Daag, Amar, Deedar and Udan Khatola. Later on, she had produced a film Danka-1969. She did character roles in Mere mehboob and Akashdeep. Then she got married to writer Ali Raza. She was never in any controversy, nor was she linked with any actor.
In one interview, however,she created a sensation by declaring that she was the only ‘ UNKISSED ‘ actress in Bombay !
Bhai Bhai-56 has wonderful songs sung by Lata, Rafi, Geeta and Kishore Kumoversaturated with musical entertainment. Just take a look at some of these films of 1956-
Awaz, Basant Bahar, Bhagam Bhag, CID, Chori chori, Chhoo mantar, Dhake ki malmal, Ek hi rasta, Fifty fifty, Fantoosh, Hatimtai, Halaku, Hum sab chor hai(my favourite film), Nai Dilli, Pocketmaar, Toofan aur Diya……..
Madan Mohan, by chance, had some films with multiple heroines. A film having three heroines is a headache for any Music Director, as all Heroines want solo songs. Madan mohan tried to satisfy them most of the times. See some examples-

In Chandan,he could not give solo songs to all Heroines ,so he made one song and gave one stanza each to every heroine in the song-” ye khule khule gesu”. each stanza was filmed on Nutan,Shyama and Mala Sinha.
The film Bhai bhai-56 was directed by M.V.Raman, a pet director of AVM films. He started his career with Tamil hit film VAZHKAI-1949. He then directed the Telugu remake ‘Jeevitham’-1950 and the Hindi version “BAHAR’-1951, in which Vyjayantimala made her debut in all 3 language films.
Raman went on to direct other remakes in Hindi like Ladki, Pehli jhalak, Asha (and its Tamil remake ‘ Atisaya Penn’), Chandan, Payal ki Jhankaar, Jwala and Bhai Bhai-All AVM films.
The lyrics were by Rajendra Krishna, a perinnial favourite of all South production houses. Chic Chocolet was Madan Mohan’s assistant in this film. The cast of the film was-Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Kishore Kumar, Nimmi,Shyama, Omprakash, David etc.
The story was a typical south meal-
In their early childhood two brothers of a rich businessman are separated in a Mela. The elder brother- Ashok kumar, who is a very selfish man, gets all the ancestral property, money and business at Madras. He is happily married with Nirupa Roy and also has a bubbly son Daisy irani.
The other brother reaches Bombay. He grows up there as a charming pickpocket. A street performer Nimmi is in his love, but he being a buddhu in such affairs does not undrstand it for quite some time. Nimmi tries to imbibe on him the virtues of honest living.
The elder brother Ashok Kumar comes to Bombay on some business work. He is stuck in the love of a beautiful girl Shyama. Ashok Kumar’s manager Omprakash is a cheat and Shyama is his wife, though she is introduced to Ashok Kumar as his unmarried sister.
Ashok kumar forgets his family at Madras and settles in Bombay as a prey to Shyama’s charms. His wife Nirupa Roy and his son come to Bombay searching for him and accidentally meet Kishore Kumar and Nimmi. With their help, Nirupa Roy succeeds in reforming Ashok Kumar. Kishor/Nimmi expose Omprakash and Shyama’s plan. it is also revealed that Kishore is Ashok’s long lost brother.
The end is a happy celebration which calls for a Group photo-a trade mark of south films in those days.
In today’s song,for a change, you will find NIMMI in a jovial mood, singing a jolly teasing song.

I always thought Nimmi had some serious “issues” with her expressions. I think she was in Daal Mein Kaala with Kishore Kumar and it was a comedy. There are scenes where she was trying to laugh but i thought she would start crying anytime! Almost giving the impression that she was like mentally challenged! She has to be the same in real life too, more or less.

A wonderful song, I remember hearing of the radio. One of the popular songs from this movie, if i heard it on radio many times.
So Shyama is vamp, and the superhit song ‘aye dil mujhe bataa de’ is vampish !
About Nimmi, the last i heard she used to stay at Worli Seaface. I was trying to find her in the Anniversary list, her date of birth is not listed.

This movie Bhai Bhai is based on the Tamil film “Rattha Pasam” and not Chella Pillai. The Tamil movie also starred two real life brothers- T.K.Shanmugam and T.K.Bhagavati.
