Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Teri oar teri oar haay rabba

Posted on: July 10, 2013

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This song won the Filmfare award for Best female playback singer of 2008, for Shreya Ghoshal. Shreya Ghoshal is one find of the decade as far as female playback singers are concerned. She is here there everywhere, in all films. She has dominated the female playback scene for some years now. With Lata and Asha both almost out of contention and singing few songs, there was a gap which is filled somewhat first by Alka Yagnik in the 90’s and than by Shreya Ghoshal. I especially like her solo songs. Of course, nobody can quite dominate a field like Lata and Asha did for 40 odd years. The field is wide open now and with more competetion from all around. But Shreya Ghoshal is most talented of the lot and sounds good in all types of songs.

In this song Shreya Ghoshal is singing a duet with Raahat Fateh Ali Khan. I can not believe that this song is five years old, how time flies. Raahat Fateh Ali Khan too is a regular on the hindi film scene. Being the son of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and following his footsteps in the field of music is no mean task. He has managed to hold his own, not winning any nominations or awards, but doing well with all sorts of composers, be it Preetam, Saajid-Waajid, or Vishal Shekhar, Vishal Bharadwaj or even Himesh Reshammiya. He stands apart in the melee, with his naturally soulful voice.

Now I have managed to surprised myself on my ability to come up with two paragraphs about two contemporary singers ! And I was under the impression that I lack interest and insight into new songs. That is what the idiot box is doing to me, I get to see and hear a lot of things, unwittingly.

‘Teri ore teri ore haay rabba’ is a song from the 2008 film ‘Singh is Kinng’. Yes the king here is spelled with double ‘N’. Must be on the advise of a numerologist. Many film people have done this change of spelling, to bring good luck. How true Arunkumar Deshmukh Sir is, when he says that the film industry is full of superstitious people !

Desert song series is incompete without at least one song picturized in the desert of Egypt. For a while this location of pyramids in Egypt was a favourite of hindi film makers. I had to choose between two songs of this location. The other one which lost out and not featuring in the series is ‘Sooraj huaa maddham.. chand jalne lagaa’ from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’.

This desert song no. 14 is picturized on Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. It is written by Mayur Puri and composed by Preetam.

Good write-up. I don’t follow current Hindi cinema music much, but this song does stand out for its catchy tune. BTW, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the nephew of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (he is not his son as stated in this write-up).

in the 60’s and 70’s it was Brindavan gardens, now its the Pyramids 🙂

Catchy tune! Raahat’s voice is very rich and Shreya Ghoshal too has a sweet voice. Wonder how long will these singers last.
