Aayee Id mubaarak aayee

Id Mubarak, to all dear friends and readers.

The holy month of Ramzaan comes to a close. A time of slowing down, a time for reflection, a time for meditation, a time for study of the Holy Qu’raan, and a time for learning. And more importantly, a time for forgiveness, and a time for charity. It has been a month of prayers – prayers for peace, prayers for amity, prayers for friendship and benevolence.

It has been month of dawn to dusk fasting, from ‘sairi’ (or ‘suhoor’) to ‘iftaar’ every day. A month of penance – penance to appreciate frugality, penance to appreciate the needs of your brethren, penance to appreciate the goodness and value of sharing. To learn of the needs of others, and to nurture the compassion for giving.

A month of contemplation of the self. A month of envisioning of the self in divinity and of the divinity in self. A month of being close and feeling near to the Almighty.

It is in the month of Ramzaan that Muhammad Saaheb (PBUH) received the first revelations sent down by the Almighty, who proclaimed to Muhammad (PBUH) that fasting for His sake was not a new innovation, but rather an obligation practiced by those truly devoted to the oneness of God.

Id–ul-Fitr is the beginning, the first day of the month of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. The day of celebrations, a day of new things, new gifts, and bright new clothes. A day of cooking the best dishes, and a day of feasting.

It is a day of smiles, a day of greetings, and a day of embracing and accepting. A day of embracing the friends, and loved ones, and also of embracing those who are friendless. It is a day of sharing love, a day of sharing compassion, a day of building bridges, a day of revival. It is a day of coming together, a day of reunion.

It is a day of being thankful – thankful to the Almighty, for this life, for this nourishment, for this feeling of plenty, for this circle of love and friendliness. It is being thankful for all the happiness and joy He has bestowed upon us. And we all join in this celebration for today – in love, in friendship and in thankfulness.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. The Beneficent, the Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. Who has made the earth our couch, and the heavens our canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith fruits for our sustenance.

Amen

The songs of celebration are aplenty in Hindi films, for all kinds of celebrations. And indeed, Id is a very special celebration in the subcontinent. Here is a wonderful and simple song of Id celebrations from the film ‘Rehnumaa’ from 1948. A special sound that is more than six and a half decades young.

The film is a period costume drama, produced and directed by Habib Sarhadi. The music is composed by Dhoomi Khan. The lyrics for the 11 songs of this film are penned by Habib Sarhadi and Dhoomi Khan. However, the specifics of which song by which poet are not known. Also not listed are the names of the singers. Most of the song is in chorus, with a few lines of solo singing in both male and female voices. However, the names of singers are not available.

Listen and be blessed, with the spirit of celebration. Id Mubaarak.
