Hema Malini was born in a Tamil Iyengar Brahmin family to Jayalakshmi and VSR Chakravarti Iyengar in Ammankudi, Madras Province (now Tamil Nadu). She has two brothers. She is a dancer trained in the classical forms of Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi & Mohiniattam. She owns the Natya Vihar Kalakendra dance school. She is also a producer & director who has helmed films & television serials like ‘Terah Panneh’, ‘Rani Laxmibai’, ‘Bharti’, and ‘Noopur’ for Doordarshan. She also appeared as anchor for weekly Rangoli on Doordarshan. The films she has directed are ‘Dil Aashna Hai’ and ‘Tell me O Khuda’ as far as I can recall. There may be one or two more.
Hema Malini was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000 by the Government of India. Also in 2000, she won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2019 a Filmfare Special Award for 50 Years of Outstanding Contribution to Cinema.
Hema Malini is the darling of Indian film audiences from the time she appeared onscreen in 1968 in ‘Sapnon Ka Saudagar’ as Raj Kapoor’s heroine. She has appeared in almost 30-35 films as Dharmendra’s heroine. They met for the 1st time at a premiere in 1968 & acted together for the 1st time in ‘Tum Haseen Main Jawwan’ in 1970.
Hema Malini was also frequently cast as leading lady to Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor. She was a personal favorite of actor- filmmakers Feroz Khan, Dev Anand, Manoj Kumar etc. She may have been an actress in commercial films & called ‘Dream Girl ‘ by her fans but she also tested her skills playing deglamourized roles in “Lekin”, “Ek Chadar Maili Si” and a few more. She was given a different look in Gulzar’s “Kinaara”, “Meera”, Khushboo” etc.
Alongwith Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Jaya Bhadhuri Hema Malini was a part of my growing up years. Contrary to popular belief, I have never seen most of their films when they released in the 1970s/1980s. Started seeing many of the films of these actresses only in the last 10-15 years, all thanks to cable television (1st) and satellite television these days.
‘Sharaafat’ (1970) was a romantic drama film, directed by Asit Sen (not to be confused with the comedisn actor), starring Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini in lead roles. Hema Malini plays the role of a feisty tawaif (courtesan) Chanda in search of her father, in this satire about society’s hypocritical moral standards.
The film had music by Laxmi-Pyare & Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. The songs were in the voices of, only, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Hema Malini looked very petite, elegant & beautiful through the film- specially in the dance sequences. Even Dharmendra looked very handsome with a very majestic looking Ashok Kumar. Sonia Sahni, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Paro Devi, D.K. Sapru, Kanhaiyalal, Tun Tun, Jagdeep, Mohan Choti etc. were part of the supporting cast.
Today’s song is the climax song where Chanda tells her life’s tale and confronts Ashok Kumar who is her biological father but is unaware of it. The film ends with a lot of preaching about how instead of questioning the morals of a tawaif, the people who frequent the kothas need to recheck their morals.

HM directed only 2 films. Received the best actress Filmfare award for SEETA AUR GEETA, 1972. Her very first among 11 nominations. She was nominated for most of her films with Gulzar.
