In Hindi movies, actors tend to get typedcast and it is difficult for them to change their image because the audience refuse to see them in roles different from their usual ones. Thus we have had cases where some actors played the same kinds of role once they got typedcast in that role. For instance, Nazeer Khan would mostly be the hapless baap of a girl of marriageable age, while A K Hangal would always play an elderly man of principles, while C S Dubey and Kanhaiyalal would always play shifty eyed moneylenders.
What image gets formed when one thinks of Amjad Khan ? The role of “Gabbar Singh” in “Sholay” (1975) of course. Today (12 november 2013) is the 73rd birth anniversary of Amjad Khan (12 november 1940- 27 july 1992).
Amjad Khan is one actor, who tried to come out of the image of “Gabbar Singh” and he did so successfully. Even then, it was an amusing sight to see the erstwhile Gabbar Singh playing Basanti’s brother in a subsequent movie. 🙂
Amjad Khan performing a thumka while lip syncing a song is no less amusing. Here is just that kind of a song from “Pyaara Dushman” (1980). This song also has the Vidya Sinha, normally seen as a proper Bhartiya Nari, playing the role of a tawaif and the receipient of Amjad Khan’s advances. What was the Hindi movie world coming to. 🙂 Now the only thing left for me to see in Hindi movies is Keshto Mukherji playing a no nonsence Police officer and Shetty playing the role of a drunkard. 🙂
On the occasion of Amjad Khan’s birth anniversary, here is this song from “Pyaara Dushman” (1980) that was quite popular with the front benchers in the movie halls those days. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle with gusto. Anjaan is the lyricist and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

thank u PCji for sending this song to Atul. And Atulji for posting it. Actually i had mentally written a similar write up for this song. and almost word for word it is here. and i had wanted to send it for Amjad Khan (my favourite Khan next in line will be Kader Khan) birthday. but this last few days have been very busy with my son having come for the weekend etc.
