We have all played antakshari at least once in our life time. There will definitely be many who will say that it is more that once. So when does a group feel like playing it? Probably when on a bus to some picnic spot with friends or on a train or sometimes even at marriage functions. At least these were the times my group, whether it be a bunch of cousins or classmates, indulged in the game. Especially if it was raining and we can’t go out on the field during lunch hour during school days. Now my daughter says that they used to play the game daily on the way to school in their bus. I remember there was this cousins wedding in ’85 and the gamer that we started went on for around 5 hours with no team willing to give up. O it was a lot of fun. And then our elders had to physically dismantle the group to disperse the group.
Now I am sure all of you will be wondering where all this is leading to. Actually I just realized that 27th December is Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan’s (means Salman Khan or Sallu as some would like to call him) birthday. Then I went through the list of his films to see which would be a nice song to post on his birthday. I knew for a fact that he had debuted in a Rekha starrer as Farooque sheikh’s younger brother in 1988. Also that his first major hit was “Maine Pyaar Kiya”. Then I remembered that there is an antakshari song in that movie which was played during some festival or celebration. (Am sorry I don’t know which as I am yet to see the film as a whole, since I really get put off by the sentimental stuff that the movie shows.) but that doesn’t stop me from being a fan of the songs of the movie as such.
Also what attracts me to the song is they haven’t changed the lyrics to suit the situation of the film as was done in the medley song of Mr.India. Another thing to note is how Lata Mangeshkar has resung some of her own songs and honestly speaking doesn’t sound half as good as in the originals. Then she has sung an Asha Bhonsle song in this medley (Haal Kaisa hai janaab ka) and that gives us an opportunity to compare the 2 sisters. Next thing to note is how S.P.Balasubramanian handles Kishore Kumar (Ja mujhe na ab yaad aa; sama hai suhana suhana & inteha ho gayi intezaar ki) Mohd. Rafi (ek banjara gaye) and Mukesh (Kahta Kabir suno bhai sadho, ruk ja o jaanewaali & hum toh tere aashiq hai). Now the next singer who gets to sing an older song is Shailendra Singh, he also gets to sing a Kishore Kumar plus a Mahendra Kapoor song. And finally there is Usha Mangeshkar who gets a Asha Bhonsle song (Husn ke lakhon rang) and 2 Lata songs (Hoton mein aisi baat & the cross line of Gore Rang pe na itna guman kar). I was wondering as I wrote this what must have been the feelings in the minds of the 2 sisters as they shared the recording room to sing this medley of songs.
The general rule in this song is that SPB is playback for Salman Khan, Lata Mangeshkar for Bhagyashree, Shailendra Singh for Laxmikant Berde & Usha Mangeshkar for Pervin Dastur(the curly haired parsi who was seen only in this movie) and Huma Khan. Reema Lagoo is also there in the song. I don’t know if Ram Laxman should get the credit for this song as all the songs used are intheir original tunes without even a slight modification. Also various sites give Dev Kohli the credit for being the lyricist. Should we also?
Chalo Salman Khan ke Happy birthday pe lets play Antakshari.

Lyrics
aaja aayi bahaar
dil hai bekaraar
o mere raajkumar
tere bin raha na jaaye
aa jaa

ja mujhe na ab yaad aa
ja mujhe na ab yaad aa
o mujhe bhool jaane de

ja ja ja mujhe na ab yad aa tu
tumhari najar kyun khafa ho gayi
khata bakhsh do
gar khata ho gayi
hamaara iraada to kuchch bhi na thha
tumhari khata khud sazaa ho gayi
ik banjara gaaye
jeewan ke geet sunaaye
hum sab jine waalon ko jine ki rah bataye
ik banjaara gaye ho ho oo
haal kaisa hai janaab ka
kya khayaal hai aapka
tum to machal gaye oho ho ho
yoonhi fisal gaye aa aa aa
haal kaisa hai janaab ka
kahat kabeer suno bhai saadho
baat kahu mai khari
ye dunia ek numbari to main das numbari
ye dunia ek numbari to main das numbari
arre kahat kabira suno bhai sadho
baat kahu mai khari
ye dunia ek numbari to main das numbari
ye dunia ek numbari to main das numbari
ramchandra kah gaye siya se

hans chugega daana dun ka kauwa roti khayega
hey ramchandra kah gaye siya se
samaa hai suhana suhana
nashe mein jahaan hai
kisi ko kisi ki khabar hi kahaan hai
har dil mein dekho mohabbat jawa hai
ho o o

ho o raama ho
ham to chale pardes hum pardesi ho gaye
ham to chale pardes hum pardesi ho gaye
chhoota apna des hum pardesi ho gaye
hooo
husn ke lakho rang kaun sa rang dekhoge
aag hai ye badan kaun sa ang dekhoge
gore rang pe na itna gumaan kar
gora rang do din me dhal jayega
gore rang pe na itna gumaan kar
gora rang do din me dhal jayega
main shamaa hoon tu hai parwaana aa aa aa
main shama hoon tu hai parwaana
mujhse pahle tu jal jaayega
ho gore rang pe na itna gumaan kar
ruk ka ruk ja o jaanewaali ruk ja aa aa
main hoon raahi teri manzil ka
najron mein teri mai bura sahi
aadmi bura nahi mai dil ka
ruk ja
jahaan bhi jaati hoon wahi chale aate ho
chori chori mere dil mein samaate ho
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho
hum to tere aashiq hain sadiyon puraane
hum to tere aashiq hain sadiyon puraane
chaahe tu maane
chaahe na maane
chaahe tu maane
chaahe na maane
hum to chale aaye sanam tujhko manaane
chahe tu

This ‘antaakshari song’ was very liked then and was the highlight of this film.
HMV had released an additional audio album which contained this ‘antaakshari song’ due to its popularity.
Credits – all those who re-create the nostalgia deserve to be credited.
