We in this blog discuss songs ranging from extremely well known songs to extremely rare songs. Discussing songs that are well known for most music lovers is one thing, but discussing rare songs that few people may be aware of gives me special satisfaction.
It is popularly believed that rare songs are mostly songs belonging to very old movies and/ or songs belonging to obscure C grade movies. But sometimes it so happens that one can come across rare songs even in relatively newer movies.
I love discussing rare songs in the blog and I also love stumbling against rare songs that I knew nothing about. It gives me a pleasant surprise when I come across rare songs from “recent” movies.
Here is a rare song from a “recent” movie. The movie is “Alibaba” (1976). I was at my precocious best in 1976 as far as knowing about Hindi movies and their songs were concerned but even I had never heard about this movie.
When one tries to find out about this movie on internet then one finds that imdb mentions this movie as directed by Mohammad Hussain. Going by imdb, Lalita Pawar was the only actor in this movie. 🙂 Searching further in other sites, I find that this movie had Dara Singh and Komilla Virk in lead roles. Dev Kumar, Rajendra Nath, Satyadeep, Bhagwan, Birbal, Maruti etc are the other actors in the movie.
The songs of this movie are just as obscure as the movie itself.
Here is a song from this movie that I became aware of just a few days back. When I heard this song and watched the picturisation, I was amazed and I could not believe that a song of this quality should end up as an obscure song instead of ending up as an extremely well known song.
This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised as a dance song on an actress who has been described as Laxmi Chhaaya by the uploader. But she does not look like Laxmi Chhaaya to me.
PS-Now the consensus is that She is Laxmi Chhaaya, after all. 🙂
This song was uploaded by Tommydan, a legend as far as restoring poor prints of old Hindi movies into wonderful visual treats is concerned. The print quality of this video is a testimony of what Tommydan is capable of.
This song was uploaded in 2012 and I noticed that very few people had watched this video since then and the video had received only three comments. The first comment was from Edwina. Her commment is ” Beautiful! Well done!!!” She of course knows what she is talking about- she herself being a noted dancer of Hindi movies in 1960s.
The second comment was from Yawar Kafeel. He is none other than the son of Kafil Azar, the lyricist of this song !
The third and last comment is from Satyajit Rajurkar.
Satyajit Rajurkar is a well known name among the fans of old HFM. I became aware of his name some time back when I became active on facebook and began to look for facebook groups dealing with HFM. He is a rare songs enthusiast and he runs a Rare songs group on facebook. I found myself quite at home in his group.
That is not his only claim to fame, of course. We all keep talking about Rafi excel sheet in our blog. The original Rafi excel sheet was created by someone else, but the refined and updated version of Rafi excel sheet that we all refer to has been created by Satyajit Rajurkar !
Interacting with Satyajit Rajurkar is a pleasurable and highly fruitful experience as one can learn a lot about HFM from him. I have learnt about several rare songs from him. I have felt that he is just the kind of person who would fit right in in our blog. And he in fact is a regular, even if silent visitor to the blog.
Not any longer. Satyajit Rajurkar will henceforth be a contributor to this blog as well.
The next article after this will be his writeup. I take this opportunity to welcome him among the select group of our contributors. I hiope that his association with the blog will help enrich our blog and add a new dimension to it.
Before we move on to his write up that follows next, here is this fantastic rare song from “Alibaba” (1976). The song is a must listen and must watch song !
Here is this wonderful song, whose music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.

I also think she is Laxmi Chhaya. I also invite the attention of your readers to the clip from 3.25 to 4.00. Here the dancer is in slow motion and all other characters are in “freeze”. For a director of a C-grade movie such experiment shows that he had a desire to be creative. I applaud such innovations.

My gut feeling says that the dancer is LAXMI CHHAAYA(I am 100% sure about this).I can see all typical laxmi chhaya dance steps and her actions in this dancer.
