Today, January 28th is the 84th birth anniversary of Pandit Jasraj, the living legend of the Mewati gharana of Hindustani classical music. Mewati is the region partly located in southern Haryana and partly in north-east Rajasthan.

Pandit Jasraj was born in Hissar (Haryana) on January 28, 1930 in a family of Hindustani classical musicians. At the age of 3, he lost his father, Pandit Motiram. It was his elder brother who took the responsibility of guiding his younger brother in Hindustani classical music. His first inspiration for becoming a vocalist germinated in his childhood when he heard for the first time a ghazal deewaana banaana hai to deewaana bana desung by Akhataribai Faizabadi (Begum Akhtar). But for earning a livelihood, he learnt tabla and became a accompanist tabla player to vocalists. However, after getting humiliating treatment, he vowed never to be an accompanist and decided to become a vocalist. After getting rigorous training under the guidance of his elder brother Pandit Maniram and Maharaja Jaywant Singh Waghela, Pandit Jasraj was ready for his first national level concert on the National Programme of All India Radio.

The initial period of Pandit Jasraj’s musical journey was full of struggle. He worked for All India Radio on contract basis which would mean that he would get fees only when he got singing assignments. In 1955, he got associated with the making of V Shataram’s ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’ (1955). During this period, he was introduced to Madhura, V Shantaram’s daughter. Since his financial condition was not good, it was only in 1960 that the idea of marriage occurred and they got married. They have a daughter Durga Jasraj, the TV anchor of the popular programme ‘Antakshari’ on ZEE TV and a son Sharandev who became music director in a few Hindi films. Jatin and Lalit Pandit, once the popular music director duo of Hindi films are his nephews.

During his singing career spanning over six decades, Pandit Jasraj created more than 100 bandishes. He also popularised the ancient Sanskrit verses by singing them in Hindustani classical music. He is also credited with introducing a new form of jugalbandi based on the ancient system of ‘moorchhana’ in which a male and a female vocalist sing different raags at the same time. During the last few years, he has been experimenting with blending Hindustani classical music with spirituality and the impact of various raags on the human emotions. He believes that classical music has a soothing effect on human mind provided one has liking for it.

Pandit Jasraj has received many accolades during his musical journey. Prominent among them is Sangeet Natak Akademy Award in 1987 and Padma Vibhushan in 2000.

Note : Some of the information in the article has been taken from Film Division’s documentary on Pandit Jasraj and also from his official website http://www.panditjasraj.com.

Pandit Jasraj has sung only 4 songs in 3 films – ‘Ladki Sahayadri Ki’ (1966), ‘Birbal My Brother’ (1975) and ‘1920’ (2008). It is interesting to note that for ‘1920’ (2008), he sang for music director Adnan Sami, a pop song vaada hai tumse vaada. The female version of this song was sung by another Hindustani classical vocalist, Praveen Sultana.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Pandit Jasraj, I am presenting a song ‘vandana karo archana karo’ from the film LADKI SAHYAADRI KI (1966). The song was penned by Bharat Vyas and it was set to music by Vasant Desai. The film was produced under the banner of Rajkamal Kala Mandir and directed by V Shantaram. The cast included Prabhakar Phansikar, Sandhya, Keshavrao Date, Kumar Dighe, Shalini Abhyankar, Baburao Pendharkar, Vatsala Deshmukh, Ganesh Solanki etc. This film did not get much success at the box office and as such this is one of the lesser known films from Rajkamal banner.

Only the audio clip of the song is available. But I guess that it is picturised as background song in the movie.

It was really a wonderful experience to sample a piece of real Classical music in a Hindi Film. I am sure Panditji would have found the working in Films very unsuitable to his temperament and hence the small number of occasions when he did sing for films. I am a great fan of Panditji and his family, being closer to Pandit Maniram who lived in Calcutta,

It was always a pleasure to attend Pt Jasraj’s recitals on his father, Pt Motiram, mahotsav in Hyderabad each year (that too free of charge), till 1996 when I left India.

Jiyo Kamat Ji!
