Greetings all, for a fabulous and colorful holi. May this festival of spring colors enliven your lives with joyful celebrations and pouring streams of happiness. Let the colors flow, and brighten up the canvases of life. Happy Holi.

This colorful celebration in our lives, is inseparable from music. Song and music are immersed in every thread and every breath of the life of our culture. And when it is this festival of colors, the excitement and the verve that it creates within, never fails to express itself in delightful songs. And likewise, the theme of celebration for this festival is inextricably blended with the tales and pastimes of Lord Krsna. The festival and its colorful musical celebrations find their place in our history, and in the tales of the years that Krsna spent in Brij, as a child. Nine out of ten song of Holi will have direct or even an oblique reference to Vrindavan, the gopis and the gwaalaas, and Radha Krsna themselves. The spirit of this legend runs incessantly through almost all the Holi songs.

As is inseparable the festival of Holi and its songs from our lives, so it is also inseparable from the Hindi film screen. It is no wonder that the most celebrated of all the festivals on the Hindi screen is this festival of colors. And the songs of Holi – well they have a special place in the annals of Hindi film music. Right from the time that the film song is born, the songs of Holi have been there to enliven the screen and the sounds, every time this festival figures somewhere in the storyline. In fact, many times, the situation of Holi is simply engineered into the storyline. Just so that one more song and dance sequence can be inserted into the screenplay.

The songs of Holi go as far back as 1931, when the sounds and the music and consequently the film songs, made their first appearance in films. The earliest Holi song that I could trace in the Geet Kosh is from the 1931 film ‘Ghar Ki Laxmi’. The mukhdaa of the song goes like – “Mo Pe Daar Gayo Saari Rang Rang Ki Gaagar, Kaisa Dhokha Diya. . .”. This, and many other songs of that era, are now lost. Just a pin point of the references remain, in the shape of the song titles. Aah, only if these songs were still available.

Today, I present a song from this very first decade of Hindi films – a song from film ‘Aurat’ from 1940. ‘Aurat’ is a magnum opus by producer director Mehboob, a much celebrated film of its era, that was remade by Mehboob himself, as a significantly more celebrated and iconic film in 1957 –‘Mother India’. The latter creation also carries within its list of songs one of the most celebrated Holi songs of all times – “Holi Aayee Re Kanhaai Rang Barse Sunaa De Zaraa Baansuri”.

The song for today is created by Dr. Safdar Aah Sitapuri, and it is tied into the scintillating threads of music by Anil Biswas. One of the cases where the video of the film is available, and one can also make out the on screen performers. Shamu (role played by Arun Ahuja) and Radha (role played by Sardar Akhtar) are a newly wed couple, and the festival of Holi is a special event in their married life. The song is spearheaded by Arun Ahuja.

In the first ‘antaraa’, the lady who joins in singing is Jamna (role by Jyoti), wife of Bansi, the bosom pal of Shamu. In the second ‘antaraa’, it is Radha (i.e. Sardar Akhtar) who joins the singing. My intuition about the singing voices is that the actors have sung for themselves. (Note: Geet Kosh lists Anil Biswas and chorus as the singing voices. But that information is most likely incorrect, since the song has two distinct female voices, in addition to the one male voice. Hence, my guess about the identity of the singers. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please comment on this.)

Listen to this enlivening celebration that is more than seventy years old. Happy Holi once again, to all and your loved ones. And enjoy the colors.
