In 1973, he wrote the prescient lines that eventually would become a significant epitaph for him.

log mere geeton ko churaa kar dhaalenge afsaanon mein
mere dil ki aag bategi duniya ke parwaanon mein
waqt mere geeton ka khazaana dhoondegaa
dil ka soona saaz taraana dhoondega
teer e nigaah e naaz nishaana dhoondega
mujhko mere baad zamaana dhoondegaa

Remembering Asad Bhopali Sb on the anniversary of his passing away today (9th June). Two decades and four years ago in 1990, this definitive poet breathed his last on this day, bringing to close a career that lasted for four decades.

It is not many artists whose careers end with such a flourish. The film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ was released in December 1989. The songs written by Asad Sb became a rage for the young hearts and old lovers alike. Popularity of songs like “Dil Deewana, Bin Sajna Ke Maane Naa”, and “Mere Rang Mein Rangne Waali”, spread like wildfire. In 1990, when the Filmfare awards were announced, the best lyricist award went to Asad Sb, for the song “Dil Deewana, Bin Sajna Ke Maane Naa”. A dream of popularity that many artists think about. But alas, the protagonist was the one who could not savor and enjoy the fruits of this success. Asad Sb was in Bhopal, bedridden with illness, and could not even travel to Bombay to accept the award. And within a matter of few months, he left for his last journey away from this mortal world.

May it have been so that the memories of the songs of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ would have been the happy ones to carry. But as it turned out, the song from 1973 film ‘Ek Naari Do Roop’ (cited above) became the signature memory – turning into a prophecy in hindsight, written seventeen years earlier – “Dil Ka Soona Saaz Taraana Dhoondega”.

Asad Sb’s journey in the film industry started in 1949, when the sibling film director duo of Fazli brothers came to Bhopal in search of new poetical talent for their films and the film industry in general. The songs of their film in progress – ‘Duniya’, were being written by Aarzoo Lucknowi, who migrated to Pakistan after the partition. In 1949, in a mushaira in Bhopal, the young poet Asad, swayed the gathering, winning hearts with his verses. And in the process, also impressing the producers from Bombay to invite him as the lyricist for their film.

A debut that turned out to be a great success with songs like “Armaan Lutey Dil Toot Gaya” and “Rona Hai To Chupke Chupke Ro”. This was followed by a journey across four decades during which he regaled the listener’s with fabulous songs one after the other. I will desist from listing a sampler. The popularity of his songs continued to rise, as the time moved into the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1970s, the number of writing assignments that came his way were lesser, but still the quality of songs and their popularity with the listening public showed that Asad Sb had a finger on the changing pulse and tastes of the newer generations. This is so well represented by the success of his verses in 1989.

For the memories today, I have selected this absolutely fabulous dance song, sung by Suman Kalyanpur, from the 1967 film ‘Sab Ka Ustad’. A typical stunt film that is the specialty of Sheikh Mukhtar has a star cast that also includes Sujit Kumar, Kum Kum, Anwar Hussain, Helen, Maruti, Tuntun, Minakshi, Shekhar, Madhumati, Lalita Kumari etc. The film has seven songs, and in the established tradition of B/C grade films, the songs themselves are wonderful gems that give a lie to the quality or grade of the film itself. All songs are from the pen of Asad Sb. And the music – from the mind of music director Ganesh, that prodigal genius whose huge talent was wasted on B/C grade films, and that too a handful.

On screen, this song is performed by Kum Kum and a group of dancers. I request readers to help identify the other significant faces in the group of dancers accompanying Kum Kum. As per the storyline, this song is performed on the occasion of Basant Panchmi, in the neighborhood.

Another very dear memory from the radio days. I am sure the replay of this song will set the feet tapping and the hearts add another spring to the beats. Listen and enjoy.

Song-Main to khadi re khadi re (Sab Ka Ustaad)(1967) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Asad Bhopali, MD-Ganesh
Chorus

Lyrics

aaa aaa aaa aaa aaa aaa
aaaa aaaa aaaa aaa
oo oo oo

main to khadi re khadi re
aankhen ladi re ladi re
jiya tarse milan ki hai raat re
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

main to khadi
khadi re
aankhen ladi
ladi re
jiya tarse milan ki hai raat re
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

nainaa lajaaye morey
ho ho ho
dhalke chunariya
dhalke chunariya
sooni dagar pe kab se
bhatke nazariya
bhatke nazariya
har aahat pe manwaa boley
dekh wo saajan aaye re
dhalta suraj dekh ke toraa
dil kyun doobaa jaaye re

bheji patiya devariya ke haath re
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

waada kiya thha tu ne
ho ho ho
waada liya thha
waada liya thha
aana na thha to aisa aa
phir kyun kiya thha
phir kyun kiya thha
main kya jaanoon pyaar ki batiyaan
kar baithi nadaani re
tere dil ki us bedardi ne
koi qadar na jaani

badi waisi hai mardon ki jaat re
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

main to khadi
khadi re
aankhen ladi
ladi re
jiya tarse milan ki hai raat re
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya
kaahe dil lagaaya
bairi tu na aaya

Hindi script lyrics (Provided by Sudhir)

आs आs आs आs आs आs
आss आss आss आs
ओ ओ ओ

Here is one of my favourites.

Sau baar janam lenge, sau baar fanah honge
Aaye jaan-e-wafa phir bhi hum tum na juda honge.

My tributes to Asad Bhoplai.
