Atul Song-A-Day 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 30
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Sudhir ji, one of the Atulite stalwarts, kindly alerted me in mid-April about the impending big event of Bicenquinquagenary or the 10,000th posting on Atul ji’s Song-a-Day Blog sometime in May or June 2014 … and suggested that like other Atulites, I too should submit a special write-up on the occasion.

Ardent an Atulite as I am, I am also a music illiterate – I know nothing about the intricacies of music nor much music history like other contributors on this Blog. So I decided to write about something that has a special place in my heart – not just because of its musical quality but because it took me nearly a 40-year search to find it.

Some background will be in order. In February 1974 when I was working as a bank officer in Bhopal, I was assigned temporary charge for 35 days of managing a branch office in Shahganj, a rural centre 70 km away. I used to travel up and down Bhopal-Shahganj during that period by bus on every working day. The bus radio blared Akashvani and Vividhbharti transmissions during the journey. One particular number “grabbed” me – it was a private number “Bolo Bolo Kanha Bolo Chhaliya” composed by the redoubtable Jaidev and superbly rendered by a then-young phenomenon from Bangladesh called Runa Laila who had taken the India’s music world by storm with her other better known number Dama-dam mast kalandar (https://atulsongaday.me/2013/04/17/dama-dam-mast-kalandar/) and her stage presence in TV programs.

Tried as I did to get that number on a cassette (and later on CD and then via the Internet), I never could find it. Then, I happened to meet up with several bank executives of a European bank from Bangladesh in training programs that I conducted during 2008-11. I badgered every single one of them to help me get any type of recording of this number. They all promised; one of them even claimed to know someone close to Runa Laila – but the result was still the same – I never got hold of this elusive number. I let it be known to everyone I knew who had passion for yesteryears’ music about my quest … then one day in Nov 2011 it fell in my lap, so to say, when I received an e-mail from a friend from Delhi and attached to it was an mp3 clip of “Bolo Bolo Kanha Bolo Chhaliya”! Thus ended my four decades long quest for it.

Enough has already appeared on Runa Laila on this blog here by our in-house encyclopedia Arunkumar ji for me to add anything to it. And a detailed profile of Jaidev is available here on CinePlot web-site.

But in my search for “Bolo Bolo Kanha Bolo Chhaliya” on the Internet, I found something that I have never been able to verify: At least three web-sites list this – or a number with the same mukhda – as in Raag Shankara from the film ‘Chhaliya’ (1959) here , here and here . Chhaliya (1959) is one of the films whose all songs are already posted on this blog but this one does not figure there – nor does it appear on YouTube under that movie.

Another unknown for me is the identity of the poet who wrote this lovely Runa Laila number. Someone has ventured a guess that Jaidev could have himself written it but I am skeptical about it.

I request knowledgeable Atulites to shade some light on these two mysteries – its ‘Chhaliya’ (1959) connection and the writer of the Runa Laila version of this song.

You are welcome, Sadanandji. It was a relentless chase of four long decades for this number. The only consolation in the meantime was that my wife could capture the tune and remembered the mukhda … and would sometimes sing it for me. – Shekhar

Excellent pick Shekharbhai! You reminded me of Doordarshan time when I had heard her for the first time. The wave that she had created with Damadam mast kalander…. was phenomenal.
My other favorites of hers are
Bole re papihara…

Ranjish hi sahi….

Badra leja neer hamaare….. (My fav no. 1)

Thanks again. 🙂

I myself remember searching for not a song but a person in Bhopal.
About a decade or so I read an editorial in Times of India:
After completing the road tender in Indore by ECC(L&T) their engineer went to the Incharge for the balance 5% payment. He was asked ‘mera kitna?’. Upon inquiring with Mumbai HO he was advised to offer an amount. The incharge instructed the accounts Dept to deduct the amount while making the cheque. He was not asking for himself but for the Indore Municipality(Palasia) where he was working!!!!
I was trying to search the great person by asking top people in Indore like Shekharji did for the song. Every year I used to go to Indore(being son-in-law) but to no avail. In 2011 visit I was coming back to Indore from Dewas by bus after demo of my meter, I was watching this senior gentleman talking to the conductor animatedly about the buses he had given on hire after retirement. I just asked him where he was working he said Irrigation Dept.
I shot in the dark. I retold the above story. He exclaimed that it had to be Md Hussein(if I remember the name rightly)his boss; so MH was a younger person. He sang paeans about his honesty and khuddari. He told me another story of his straight forwardness.
There was a scheme that if a town collected x (5%)amount Central Govt. would contribute 95% for the development of the town, So Dhar(MP) town collected 5 crores(50 million). To collect the balance amount this gentleman was deputed by MH to collect the cheque from New Delhi. Again ‘mera kitna’ He reports to MH who in turn orders him to be back to Indore. MH wrote a strong email to the boss at Delhi about the incident that if doesn’t get a reply MH will assume that the boss is also party to the incident. MH receives immediate reply to collect the cheque. Great na!
I google MH and wrote email eulogizing his deeds but alas there was no reply. Perhaps he was too shy to reply.
Now I am not able to google him nor able to zero on to the email. I told the worthies in Indore to honour him at our Gujarati Annual Gathering.
Can any of our bloggers in Bhopal pin him down. Hats off to the great MH. Tujhe salaam MH.

When this song by Runa Laila came on Door Darshan, in ‘Mehfil-e-Gazal’, I was one of the first to record it on my cassette recorder (I had taken out the audio output from my TV, which was not a standard feature then) I underwent huge mailing expense sending audio cassettes to all of my relatives in India and abroad. I included as many runa’s song that I could gather then..Runa also sang ‘Mai Jaanyu Naahi, which Years later came out in Lata’s voice in ‘Chand Grahan’ album. Jaidev must have recorded Lata’s song first, but since the film was abandoned, he made Runa to sing it on TV.

This bhajan is based on Kannada song, by Jaydev, lyrics by Ku.ra.si.

When I listened this Bhajan sung by Ms.Runalila,I too recalled this tune used in the Kannada Movie”Kalpa Vriksha”,the music director of this kannada movie was Sh.Jayadev.With the lyrics by the versatile and creative Kannada film personality,Late Ku,Ra Seetharama Shastry(he directed this movie also). However in the Kannada movie the song is not a Bhajan ,but a romantic duet(if my memory serves me right)
Kannada movie came to screen in 1969.And hence it appears that Sh.Jayadev composed the tune (in Raaga Shankara) first in Kannada movie ;thereafter, he might have used the same tune for Hindi Bhajan,in 1974(or so)
