“Devdas” (1935), based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s blockbuster novel of the same name was directed by P C Barua for New Theatres, Calcutta. The Hindi version of the movie was preceded by Bangla version and followed by Assamese version. All these versions were directed by P C Barua, though the actors were different in the three versions.
Hindi version had K L Saigal as Devdas, Jamuna Barua as Paro and Rajkumari Calcuttewaali as Chandramukhi. Online sources mention the artist playing Chandramukhi as simply Rajkumari (implying that it was the playback singer Rajkumari) or T R Rajkumari (of south), but both these informations are incorrect.
Lots and lots of songs from this movie (nine to be precise) have been discussed in the past. Here is the tenth and final song from this movie. This song is sung by Pahadi Sanyal who plays the role of a bullock kart driver carrying a badly sick Devdas(K L Saigal) towards Paro’s residence. One can listen to the voice of K L Saigal as well in this song.
PS-I am not sure about the identity of the singer and I have relied on YT uploaders’s identification . I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify him
The song is penned by Kidar Sharma. Timir Baran is the music director.
