Chaandni Raaten – Song No. 7
———————————-
Song No. 7 of the series is a Rafi-Asha duet from the film ‘Bhai Behan(1969). In the list of songs moviewise, there are two movies of same name ‘Bhai Behan ‘(1950) & ‘Bhai Behan’ (1959). So this movie of 1969 is making a debut in the blog with this chaand and chaandni song.

The song is picturized as a romantic song on Sunil Dutt and Nutan, in a white sari, so that she can be compared to the chaandni. This is one of the two Rafi-Asha duets in a music score dominated by Asha Bhonsle. Rajendra Krishan is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan are the composers. I thought most of S-J films must have appeared in the blog, so this is a surprise that this movie was still left in the lurch.

There are a few Rafi-Asha duets in my list of Chaandni Raaten songs. I had planned to send a post on the occasion of Asha Bhonsle’s birthday on 8th September, but somehow I seemed to have missed my cue. Anyway I am not the only one missing the cue 🙂 .

Song-Chaand nikla bhi nahin aur chaandni hai saamne (Bhai Behan)(1969) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Chaand nikla bhi nahin aur
chaandni hai saamne
chaand niklaa bhi nahin aur chaandni hai saamne
main giraa haay
main giraa koyi
aaye mujh ko thhaamne ae
chaand nikla bhi nahin aur
chaandni hai saaamne ae

aaj yehaan kal jaane kahaan
chaand badaa harjaayi hai
phir bhi pagle panchhi ne
chaand se preet lagaayi hai
haay chaand se preet lagaayi hai

chaand niklaa bhi nahin aur chaandni hai saamne
main giraa haay
main giraa koyi
aaye mujh ko thhaamne ae
chaand nikla bhi nahin aur
chaandni hai saaamne ae

tum jo bano
ek shama’a
main parwaana ban jaaun
ek ishaara aa
tum kar do
main deewaana ban jaaun
main deewaana ban jaaun
haay haay haay haay
chaand niklaa bhi nahin aur chaandni hai saamne
achha
main giraa haay
haay haay haay
main giraa koyi
aaye mujh ko thhaamne ae
haay
chaand nikla bhi nahin aur
chaandni hai saamne ae

behlaao yun na sanam
pyar ki jhooti qasmon se
ham anjaane laakh sahee
waaqif hain in rasmon se
haay
waaqif hain in rasmon se

chaand niklaa bhi nahin aur chaandni hai saamne
ah haa
main giraa haay
oye hoy
main giraa koyi
aaye mujh ko thhaamne ae
ha aa haa
chaand nikla bhi nahin aur
chaandni hai saamne ae
main giraa haay
ho ho ho
main giraa koyi
aaye mujh ko thhaamne ae
hoy
chaand nikla bhi nahin aur
chaandni hai saamne ae

Is this the first film after Shailendra died? After Jaikishan died, the team broke up as Shailendra and Jaikishan both were dead. Shankar carried on in the same name, Shankar Jaikishan, but used various lyricists, like Verma Malik etc. But even before Jaikishan died, it seems they had started using others lyricists leaving Hasrat Jaipuri.

In their debut movie Barsaat (1949), S-J used one song each by Ramesh Shastri and Jalal Mallihabadi. After that they worked exclusively with Shailendra/Hasrat Jaipuri combo for 17 years until Shailendra died in 1966, except on two occasions : Boot Polish (1954) had one song by Saraswati Kumar Deepak and College Girl (1960) had ALL songs by Rajendra Krishan.

After Shailendra died, many of his movies with Hasrat were released during 67-68. Aman (1967) had one song by Prem Dhawan and Raat Aur Din (1967) had one song by Kamlesh Verma. But rest were Hasrat/Shailendra.

Duniya (1968) seems to be the first movie without Shailendra where Hasrat was the main lyricist but other lyricists such as S H Bihari and Neeraj were used. In fact till Jaikishan’s death in 1971, they used combination of Hasrat and others for ALL their movies except Sachchai (1969) where all songs were written by Rajendra Krishan.

When Jaikishan died in 1971, that was probably the end of Hasrat as now Balidaan (71) had all songs by Verma Malik, Duniya Ka Mela had all songs by Rajendra Krishan, Main Sunder Hoon had all songs by Anand Bakshi, working with S-J for the first time.

Paapi Pet Ka Sawal Hai (1984) was the last movie where Hasrat wrote for Shankar.

I may be wrong,
but South Producers are in favour of Lyricist and Dialogue writer Rajinder Krishan always, as he did had more knowledge of South Indian langauges compared to other Hindi lyricists of that time and Rajinder krishan also a prolific dialogue writer for movies of that time.Aissa padhne ko yaa kahin Rajinder Krishanji ke bete ki interviewe mein sunaa thaa, Please correct me If I am wrong.

His knowledge of Tamil made him the ideal choice for AVM, and others to use his services for their films like Bahar, Ladki, Bhai Bhai. He wrote in all 18 scripts for AVM itself. The music directors for whom he regularly wrote songs — C Ramchandra, Madan Mohan and Hemant Kumar were also composing for the South Indian Hindi movies. The combination chalked up a series of hits right into the Sixties.
