Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 20
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

(1980 – Duet)

A brief and approximate view of the numbers from Rafi Sb’s career. I am basing this view on the data available in the Rafi Song list, and from browsing of the Geet Kosh. In the 1940s, starting from 1945 and upto 1950, his film songs number less than 200, approximately in the range of 165 to 170. Then in the 1950s, this number rises dramatically. An approximation is 1370 film songs in that decade. In the 1960s, we see a further improvement in this number – the approximate number of songs as per records is 1500, plus or minus 10. As we come into the 70s, there is a drop in this number. The records show that there are approximately 1025 songs in the decade from 1971 to 1980. I would like to add that these numbers also include the known songs from unreleased films, i.e. songs that were recorded for films, but the films either did not get made or were not released.

A tabular view of this data is as below

1945 – 1950 ~ 165 or 170 songs
1951 – 1960 ~ 1370 songs
1961 – 1970 ~ 1500 songs
1971 – 1980 ~ 1025 songs

Without getting into a number to number comparison by decade, I would just add that the number Kishore Da’s songs in the decades of 1950 and 1960 are little less than 200 in each decade. In the decade of 1970s, number of film songs by him are well over a thousand. I do not have precise numbers but together in the 1970s and 1980s, Kishore Da’s has sung approximately 2200 songs in Hindi films. I would conjecture that the number of his songs in the 1980s would be higher. In the decade of 1980s, the choice of top singers that music directors and film producers had, got limited after the passing away of Rafi Sb in 1980.

The numbers, purely by themselves, do not really show any alarming decline. With the advent of Kishore Da into playback singing, yes, the space got shared. But in my opinion, the numbers do not show the much hyped decline. It is just an expected adjustment that is bound to happen when the space gets shared. The quality of rendition needs no arguments or advocacy, at all. The sampling that I have gone thru in this series, is reason enough to discard any such speculative theories. And I must add, that for every song that I have posted, there are many more fabulous and popular songs, that are already posted here on the blog, and many that are still waiting in the wings to be showcased here. For each year, I had list of up to six or eight un-posted songs that I picked as tops, and then short listed them to two for each year. For most years, I assure you, it was a difficult choice.

And as I was doing this sampling, out of curiosity, I did wander into the decade of 1980s also. In the past, I have not paid much attention to this decade. As I checked the lists and browsed on line, I am able to find a continuous string of songs in Rafi Sb’s voice all the way to 1989 – songs that were recorded before his passing away, and then used in films and released, as and when the films got ready. There is more than enough selection available to do another series on Rafi Sb’s songs in the 1980s. That, I am sure, will be of great interest – dealing with the creative work and the quality of an artist, after his departure from this world. Of course, the work is created before he departed, but it got slowly and progressively released to listeners and fans over a period of another decade.

The song in this post is a superlative gem by all measures (including the subdued calisthenics on screen, by Jeetendra 😉 ). A wonderful duet sung with Lata Mangeshkar, from film ‘Aasha’. The lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and the music is composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. On screen, the song is performed by Reena Roy and Jeetendra. (A little clarification is required. The YT link says that the accompanying singer is Asha Bhonsle. Geet Kosh lists the singer name as Lata ji.) The video clip also shows Girish Karnad and Rameshwari, very briefly in the beginning. Elsewhere in the clip, we also see Om Prakash, playing the tabla in one of the scenes.

The film boasts of more very fabulous numbers – two more solos by Rafi Sb and one more duet with Lata ji, with another song – a prayer in the honor of Mother Goddess that Rafi Sb has sung in the company of legendary bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal. Each one of these songs are real memorable gems. Some of them already posted here – the wonderful “Jaane Hum Sadak Ke Logon Se Mehlon Waale Kyon Darte Hain”, and “Dhak Dhak Se Dhadaknaa Sikha De” . Besides the Lata solo number that is also heart stealer – “Sheehsha Ho Ya Dil Ho, Aakhir Toot Jaata Hai”.

The melody in this song is such a flowing pleasure, with voices and verses continuously melding into each other. Listening to this song fills the heart with such joy. Listen and enjoy.

NOTE: I did not deliberately include a goodbye to close this series. Because, the series has not yet ended, although we are at the target year that we had set. There sit still are some surprise posts to add to this series. More memories are still on way. 🙂

Great Post Sir !!
Rafi Saab ke baare mein jitna likha jaaye, kahaa jaaye aur sabse badi baat hain ki ‘mahsoos’ kiya jaaye – unki saadgi, unka bartaav, logon ke saath unke sambandh aur kaise ek shakhsiyat jan-maanas par chhaa jaati hai aur ek ‘farishtey’ ki tarah unki yaadon mein bas jaati hain aur pahilaati hain ‘khushboo insaaniyat aur pyaar ki’ … agar gehraayi se sochen to bahut kuchh sikhaa jaa sakta hai …
about this song – I like it very much ,
thanks !
