Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 19

(1980 – Solo)

It was 1980 that we lost this precious human being and an inimitable, pure and natural artist, to the directions of the Power that we humans do not understand. His gift of the voice and emotional empathy was bestowed by Him, and He chose to call back this endowment to the humanity. With all the hindsight and life’s experience we do understand the inevitability of this event, and our inability to do anything about it. Nothing but resigned acceptance is what we can offer. But in Rafi Sb’s case, one question does keep nagging, with regret – ‘Did it have to be so soon?’. Just at 56 years of age. And a voice that simply did not age at all. Nahm ji had commented a few days back on one of the songs – Rafi Sb’s voice is sounding younger than the actor who is performing on screen (it was Dharmendra, in film ‘Dharamveer’ from 1977).

As we are nearing the end of this series, we are actually getting to hear songs that are some of the very last that he would have recorded. The voice seems to carry on its endeavors, unchanged. One cannot feel any sign of the voice letting up. The intonations are as fresh as they were back in 1947, the gusto and the zest seems unchanged since ‘Yahoo’ happened (‘Junglee’, 1961).

But that is what we would like to believe. The person himself had other thoughts. Humble as ever, as he was, in the mid 1970s, he is said to have expressed a need to learn more at the feet of a proper guru, as he felt that his singing still needed improvements. A wonder that a singer of his caliber would think so. Or maybe it was not the singer thinking so, rather it was the person within the singer who was expressing his humble-ness, quite in line with the characteristics of the personality.

Coming to this solo song from 1980. Obscure and well known, both categories are generally progressing concurrently with every artist, all through the career. This gem of a song is from an obscure film that year – ‘Shaadi Se Pehle’. A film from the banner of SM productions, it is directed by Karunesh Thakur. The music is by Sapan Jagmohan, and the lyrics are written by Gauhar Kanpuri. The cast of actors lists the lead actors as Praveen Sood and Shahnaaz – names that do not ring any bells in the memory. Rest of the cast is recognizable – it includes Rajendranath, Raj Mehra, Komilla Wirk, Poornima, Jagdish Raj, Dheeraj Kumar, Surjit Kaur, Rajan Kapur amongst others.

A very lovely and aesthetic expression of the first tryst between lovers. The poetical paradigm is very endearing. The pace and the emphasis is just about perfect for the mood of such a song. And the rendering by Rafi Sb – I simply have no more words to say on that.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Ik khoobsoorat ladki mujhe raat ko mili thhi (Shaadi Se Pehle)(1980) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Gauhar Kanpuri, MD-Sapan Jagmohan

Lyrics

hmmmmmmmmm
ik khoobsurat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
hmmmmmmmmm
ik khoobsurat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
ik khoobsurat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
dil ki kali khili thhi
dil ki kali khili thhi
jab wo mili thi
. . .
ik khoobsurat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
ik khoobsurat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi

ghar mein usey hum apni
dulhan banaa ke laaye
baahon ki doli mein hum
us ko bithaa ke laaye
jab raat ho gayi to
armaanon ko jagaaya
yaani ke apni bigdi
taqdeer ko banaaya
naaraaz kaise hoti
naaraaz kaise hoti
wo so rahi thhi
haaye
ik khoobsoorat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
ik khoobsurat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi

phoolon ki chaandni pe
hamne usey sulaaya
phir pyaar wyaar kar ke
seene se bhi lagaaya
aage naa hum se poochho
us raat hum kahaan thhe
dil dil se mil rahe thhe
do jism ek jaan thhe
maare sharam ke shamma
maare sharam ke shamma
gul ho gayi thhi
haaye
ik khoobsoorat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
ik khoobsoorat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
dil ki kali khili thhi
dil ki kali khili thhi
jab wo mili thhi
. . .
ik khoobsoorat ladki
mujhe raat ko mili thhi
la laa la lallal lallaa
