SONGS FROM ARTISTE NAME FILMS… Song No. 7
————————————————–

Today’s song is from film Hurricane Hansa-37. This was a stunt film featuring Fearless Nadia, with her usual crew and a routine story, highlighting the thrilling stunt scenes done by her and her ‘helping assistants’- Punjab ka Beta (Horse), Austin ki beti (Dabba car) and Moti the Dog. This time we are not going to talk about Nadia or her crew etc, but we will know more about a forgotten actress Hansa- Hansa Wadkar.

Have you seen the film ” Bhumika”-77 ? Smita Patil had acted in this film. The film had earned the patronage of both the Critics and the general public. The film received many awards and accolades. This film was based on the Autobiography of Hansa Wadkar.

Since the days Talkie films started till today, only 2 films were made on the real lives of actresses. One was ” Bhumika’-77 and the other was ” Zubeida-2000″ based on the actual life of actress Zubeida ( jr. ).

Hansa Wadkar’s real name was Ratan Bhalchandra Salgaonkar. She was born at Bombay on 24-1-1923 in a family of professional singers or ” Kalawanteen” as they are called in Maharashtra. These Kalawanteens were similar to courtesans or Devdasis. They earned their living by entertaining guests by their singing, but they could not get married. They would have their ” Seths ” or benefactors to look after their living needs and sometimes they would have children also from them. However Hansa’s mother had married an upper caste person Salgaonkar. Hansa’s father was a useless person, who lived on his wife’s earnings and drank whole day and night.

Hansa was beautiful and knew singing and dancing. She wanted to work in films. There was a family friend-a distant relative- Bandarkar, who would take Hansa to various studios for finding work. She got a film, “Shaadi ka mamla”-1936 at the age of 13 years. This was actually a Marathi drama ( ” Vijayachi Lagne” by Mama Warerkar) shot as a film, which became a flop. Meanwhile Hansa was made pregnant by Bandarkar and to save face, she was married to this 10 year older person. She was just 14 year old then.

Her next film was Modern Youth-37. Then she did a few B grade films. Hansa changed her name to Hansa Wadkar, which was her maternal surname. She was not only attractive but also expert in dancing and singing. She was offered films by Bombay Talkies ,where she did 3 films-Durga, Navjeevan and Azaad. Later Prabhat also called her for Sant Sakhu in 1941. She did 3 films for Shantaram-Sant Sakhu,Ramshastri and Matwala Shayar.

Hansa worked with top banners and opposite Top actors in her heydays. She did 28 Hindi films. From 1949 onwards, she did 25 Marathi films, including Record breaking ‘Sangatye Aika-59,Ramshastri-44 etc .

Hansa’s life was was in two extremes. On her professional front, she was very successful, but on her personal front, she was very sad. She always sought Love, but she got deception, heartbreaks and torture. Her first husband Bandarkar was a very suspicious character. Due to him she had many abortions, which spoiled her health. She tried many men in search of Love, but she was a disappointed soul throughout.

Hansa Wadkar wrote her autobiography ” Sangtye Aika ” in 1970. It was the same title of her most successful film in Marathi. The book created many waves in the industry since she was very candid and open in the book. After retirement, she lived with Rajan Javale, a handsome Marathi film actor ( he did many Hindi films too ). She called him Baba. She was always ready to give Interviews, because she wanted that people should know the truth. She died on 23-8-1971.

Hansa’s Filmography- Shadi ka mamla, Modern youth, Bahadur kissan, Sneh lagna, Zamana, Durga, Criminal, Navjeevan, Azaad, Sant sakhu, Apna paraya, Dillagi, Mera gaon, Ramshastri, Meena, Aarti, Main kya karun, Begram khan, Matwala shayar, Gaurav, Dhanyawaad, Dhanwale, Mere Laal, Sant janabai, Shrikrishna Darshan, Maya machhindra, Shrikrishna Satyabhama and Shri Gurudev dutt from 49 to 66-she did 25 Marathi films.

Shyam Benegal made a film on her autobiography-Bhumika-1977. Hansa’s role was done by Smita Patil and Bandarkar was Amol palekar. The film was very successful and won many awards. ( My special thanks to shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji ,who provided me very old and rare material for this article.)

Film Hurricane Hansa -37 was a stunt film, featuring Fearless Nadia. After her superhit film ” Hunterwali”-1935, Nadia had created her own audience throughout India. Though sophisticated public and critics looked down upon stunt films, Nadia was the Queen of such films and her captive audience simply adored her. I was one of her ardent fans and have practically seen almost all her films, in their second, third or even fourth runs. To see her old films in the morning show slots, I had to travel to various corners of old Hyderabad city and sit in the dilapidated, Bed-bug infested, torn seated theatres bearing names like Taj Mahal Talkies, Paradise talkies, Krishna Talkies, Zamrrud mahal Talkies and Palace Theatre. Her films were liked by people not only for Nadia’s daring stunts, but also for the stunts of her Horse-Punjab ka beta, her Dog-Moti and the dabba model car-Austin ki beti, which sometimes overshadowed some human actors in the films !

The story of Hurricane Hansa was a routine one which fitted most nadia films, with minor changes here and there. The kingdom of Hurricane was overpowered by its evil Vazir-Zalim Singh (Sayani). The king Veer Singh ( master Mohammed) is injured, the queen is killed and one daughter Padma (Husn Bano) is kidnapped. Hansa (Nadia) the king’s surviving daughter takes her father on her Horse-Punjab ka beta and escapes to an obscure village. She is determined to win back her kingdom and make her father king again. She dons Men’s attire and a mask and rides in the night to help the oppressed and punish the oppresser. One day she meets Diler (Sardar Mansur),son of Zalim singh. Initially she is skeptical about him,but soon realises that he is a good fellow and they fall in love promptly, without wasting anymore time.

After the customary nok jhok, running around trees and singing songs, they finally decide to attack Zalim singh. In the final encounter Hansa kills Zalim Singh in the fencing fight. The king is reinstated and Hansa is free to enjoy with Diler….

The film was full of ” ajeeb-o- gareeb Karnaame ” of the Horse-Punjab ka Beta. He not only saves Hansa a few times, but also plays Cupid, when he pushes Diler into a pond in which Hansa is bathing ! Paisa vasool…

Let us now listen to a song from this film ‘ Hurricane Hansa ‘-1937,sung by Husn Bano (daughter of actress Shareefa)….
