“Laal Chithhi”(1935) was directed by Niranjan B Bhardwaj for Prakash Pictures. This extremely obscure movie had Panna, Jayant, Rajkumari, Alaknanda, Ramzan Khan, Lallubhai, Ismail, Jahaangeer, J M Kaul, Taara etc in it.

The uploader of this song has mentioned Rajkumari Dubey as the singer. But the voice bears no resemblence to the voice of Rajkumari who sang the famous song of Mahal viz. Ghabra ke jo ham sar ko and that of “Baawre Nain”(1950), viz.Sun bairi balam sach bol re . I can safely say that this is an unknown female voice that I had not heard before.

Likewise, the lyricist too is not known.

Lallubhai Nayak is the music director and that is the only information available about this song.

I have been unable to get a word (may be more) correct in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to point out missing/ correct words wherever applicable.

Song-Kudrat hai rab ki nyaari (Laal Chithhi)(1935) MD-Lallubhai Nayak

Lyrics

Kudarat hai rab ki nyaari
Kudarat hai rab ki nyaari
Kudarat hai rab ki nyaari
Kudarat hai rab ki nyaari
baade bahaari aayi
gulshan mein kaisi hariyaali chhaayi
dekho gulshan mein
ye kaisi hariyaali chhaayi

koodti hai daali daali
koodti hai daali daali
koyaliya kaali
par hai kisne paaya
shaan hai niraali
par hai kisne paaya
shaan hai niraali
hai phooli kyaari kyaari
hai phooli kyaari kyaari
baade bahaari aayi
gulshan mein kaisi hariyaali chhaayi
dekho gulshan mein
kaisi hariyaali chhaayi

naache hai titli matwaali
haan
naache hai titli matwaali
naache hai titli matwaali
haan
naache hai titli matwaali
naache hai titli matwaali
haaan naache hai titli matwaali
bhanwra hai deta taali
naache hai titli matwaali
bhanwra hai deta taali

har ?? hai tera jalwa
tu hi hai waali
har ?? hai tera jalwa
tu hi hai waali
sab tum par waari waari
sab tum par waari waari
baade bahaari aayi
gulshan mein ye kaisi hariyaali chhaayee
ye dekho
gulshan mein ye kaisi hariyaali chhaayee

the word could be Harjaee ..
har ?? hai tera jalwa…
Surely not Rajkumari Dubey…she would be 8 or 9 yrs old to sing this song. There is actress name Raj kumaari in film credit. Also other actress Alakananda and Taara, aren’t those both sisters of Sitara Devi?
Well done Koyal sound and nice try to do buzz sound for titali…lol

Just like there are several Raj Kumars, there seem to be several Rajkumaris too that lead to same name confusions.

Yes,there were 3 singing acting Rajkumaris in Hindi. I have discussed about them in details in my ” Same name Confusion” series.

?? I think the ?? line is
‘Har ja hai tera jalwa’ –
‘Ja’ is used for ‘jagah’ – place – your beauty is in every place.

Creditable recording, considering that those were the early days of technology.

Yes, the voice in the song does not match with that of Rajkumari Dubey as we have been used to hearing her in voice of most of her popular songs.

However, I feel that the voice we hear in the song under discussion may be of Rajkumari Dubey on the basis of the following inferences:

1. Rajkumari Banaraswali aka Dubey started her filmy carrier by joining Prakash Pictures of Vijay Bhatt in 1934 as actor-singer and she was in their payroll at least for a couple of years. She had worked in some films of Prakash Pictures as actor-singer such as Laal Chitti or Red Letter, 1935, Bombay Mail, 1935, Snehlata, 1936 etc.

2. When she worked in the films in 1935, she may be around 1O years. So the voice we hear in the song under discussion may be that of a 1O year old Rajkumari Banaraswali when her voice had not matured.

3. I have heard three songs of her from the film Bombay Mail, 1935 and two songs from Snehlata, 1936 . In my view, the voices in all the five songs, more or less, match with that of the song under discussion.

4. It is also said that during her stint with Prakash Pictures, she mostly sang songs under the music direction of Lallubhai Nayak.

Rajkumari Dubey Banaraswali was born on 9-2-1918 in Banares-UP.
She came to Bombay when she was 12 year old. As a child actress, her first film was Radheshyam-1932 and Afghan Abla-33 later on.
As an adult she came in prakash pictures’ ” Nai Duniya”-34 and in 1935 she acted and sang in Bambai ki sethani,Bombay Mail,Laal Chithi and Samsher-e- arab.
So, it looks that at the time the above song was sung by her,she must be around 17 year old.

lol…so once again confusion… she was born in 1924 or 1918?

The date of birth given here is from the book,” Swaron ki Yatra” by Anil Bhargav ji. According to Listeners’ Bulletin (of Hamraz ji) she died on 18-3-2000 when she was 84 years old. This means she was born in or aound 1916 or so. Thus the year of birth quoted above is nearer to reality.
In any case it can not be 1924 positively.

Then definitely she is the singer 🙂
