Today (6 january) is the birthday of Rameshwari. Rameshwari who ? Many people among younger generation may look askance on the mention of her name. But there was a time during 1977-78 when she was one of the hottest property in Hindi movies when she made her debut in Rajshree Production’s endearing movie “Dulhan wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1977). This movie turned her into an overnight sensation. People (especially women) would throng to watch this movie. When this movie was released in my town, I did not take any notice of it because the title of the movie did not appeal to me and in any case I was more into watching Amitabh Bachchan movies those days. But when I noticed that this movie was having a longer run in the town that what even “Sholay” (1975) managed, then I was intrigued and I bunked my college to watch this movie. And I was bowled over ! I then watched this movie four more times, and it was only for Rameshwari.

As can be seen by people, she is quite a plain Jane in looks, but then beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and people who went to watch this movie, including yours truly, she was Beautiful. 🙂 She had won over millions of moviegoers those days. One needed to watch this movie those days to realise what magic she had cast over moviegoers.

It was the first time that I had watched a Rajshree Productions Movie. I became a fan of Rajshree Productions movie. When the next Rajshree Productions movie came in town, I went and watched this movie first day first show. I had gone these with great expectations, with “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” as y benchmark. That movie “Paheli” (1979) fell woefully short in my estimate and I returned back greatly disappointed. Curiously, this movie ran nearly as long as DWJPMB in that movie hall, which means that most people watched the movie on its own merit and found it worthy of watching, unlike me who compared it with the Ramreshwari movie.:)

When the next movie of Rameshwari was released, people (and not just I) went to watch that movie and this time all of them had high expectations. Sadly, she fell well short of people’s expectaions in this movie called “Iqraar”(1979). In fact she could not shrug off the image and expectation of her debut movie. As a result, her movie career went all downhill from there, despite some decent roles in movies like “Sunayana:(1979), “Asha”(1980) etc. She then became a fringe actresss in movies and later TV serials.

As can be seen, Rameshwari shares her birthday with people like Kapildev, A R Rahman, Howard Hughes (world’s richest man during 1970s) etc. To people of my generation (those who watched her debut movie), she will forever be known as the actress who singlehandedly made this movie one of the biggest grosser of that year and which won Rajshree Productions a horde of diehard fans for this genre of movies. Rajshree productions went on to make a string of successful movies with similar or comparable plots for many years to come.

On the occasion of Rameshwari’s birth anniversary, here is the third song from “Dulhan wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye”(1977). This song is sung, written and composed by Ravindra Jain. The song is picturised as a background song where an ungrateful Prem Kishan, at the behest of his modern girl friend and her scheming mother decides to throw Rameshwari out of his house, after she has won over his entire family (including his ailing father) by her simple and selfless caring ways.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Song-Anchra mein phulwa lai ke (Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya man Bhaaye)(1977) Singer-Ravindra Jain, Lyrics-Ravindra Jain, MD-Ravindra Jain

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Anchraa mein phulwaa lai ke
aaye re ham tore dwaar
arre ho o
hamri arji na sunle
arji pe kaile naa vichaar
hamse roothle bidhaataa hamaar
kaahe roothle bidhaataa hamaar

bade hi jatan se ham ne
poojaa kaa aa thhaar sajaayaa
preet ki baati jodi ee ee
manwaa kaa diwraa jaraayaa
hamre man mohan ko
par nahin bhaayaa
hamre man mohan ko
par nahin bhaayaa
arre ho o o
reh gayee poojaa adhoori
mandir se diyaa re nikaar
hamse roothle bidhaataa hamaar
ho kaahe roothle bidhaataa hamaar

sone ki kalam se hamri
kismat likhi jo hoti
mol lagaa ke lete ae ae
ham bhi man chaahaa moti
ek prem deewaani haaye
aise to na roti
ek prem deewaani haaye
aise to na roti
arre ho o
itnaa dukh to na hotaa
paani mein jo dete hamen daar
hamse roothle bidhaataa hamaar
O
kaahe roothle bidhaataa hamaar

@ Atul ji – I think I first get to watch the film ‘Asha’, where I like her and later on I watched this movie too on TV , and watched this movie ‘DWJPMB’ many times since then. It was on a TV channel recently also.
Thanks for this post. I like it very much and I like this song very much too.
Thanks!!!

‘Dulhan wahi Jo Piyaa Man Bhaye,’ was a collage of FTIIans in a way ! Both the leading lady-Rameshwari and the cinematographer of this film-Binod Pradhan are alumni of FTII,Pune.
