VINTAGE NAUSHAD….Song No. 10
——————————-

I badly needed a break from my routine in Mumbai, after the unfortunate calamity in December. In all such cases, there is nothing like a visit to one’s Hometown where one can spend some time with old friends and close relatives. I proceeded to Hyderabad by train on the 24th night. Somehow, I have a fascination for Train travel and I prefer Train to Air travel. When I entered my compartment in the 1st AC bogie,I found a middle aged lady and a very smart young man already inside the cabin. Luckily, the 4th berth remained vacant till the end. The lady looked very graceful and sophisticated.

Next day morning, after the mandatory breakfast and the regular dose of medicines, I relaxed reading a recently published book by shri Anil Bhargava ji, ” Hindi Cinema- Sadee ka safar ” ( gifted to me by our Sudhir ji ). The lady was watching me intently for some time and then she asked me, “Excuse me,are you connected with the film line ?”

I was surprised and replied, “No madame, but I do write on old Hindi films and Music, on Internet”

Her face brightened up and she said,” what a coincidence ! I am Bimal Roy’s daughter, Aparajita.”

I was bowled over and was simply thrilled to meet her. She and her son Nikhilesh ( he is doing his Ph.D. at London University) were returning from an yearly family reunion at Mumbai. She stays 6 months in Hyderabad and 6 months in London. She was quite expressive. Bimal Roy had 3 daughters and 1 son. I was keen to get as much information from her about Bimal Roy as a family man. Her other sister Ms. Rinky Bhattacharya is still connected with Films and has written books on her father.

We kept on talking till we reached Hyderabad. Her son took my name, E Mail ID and details about THIS BLOG. Sure enough, I got their E Mail, thanking me for good company and our talks. I replied, as soon as I returned to Mumbai. This is one advantage of train travel. Sometimes you meet people who you know about or have looked forward to meet some day. Once I was travelling from Calcutta to Patna. The other passenger in my Coupe was the ex-chief minister of Bihar-Nitish Kumar. Of course those days he was only an opposition leader in Lalu’s Raj. A very learned, voluble and a perfect Gentleman he was.

You must be wondering, instead of discussing about Naushad’s song or the film, where I was straying, but the point I wanted to make was, life is full of surprises and one doesn’t know how one’s destiny would change and at what turn of life. Similarly, in Film industry too there are such cases. Guru Dutt, who started his career as a Choreographer, ended as an actor and an ace Director. A Rationing Dept. clerk turned into India’s most celebrated chocolate Hero-Dev Anand. Shambhu Sen who was an expert dancer in the troupe of Uday Shankar, became a composer and a Chef in a far eastern country hotel became a leading action Hero in Bollywood-Akshay kumar.

During the early era of the talkie, the artists were forced to do acting, singing, composing etc under compulsion of studio system, but there was one artist who by his choice-handled various fields of films. He was a Hero in films, a Lyricist, a singer, a composer, a character actor and even a Choreographer. When I was going through the cast of the film Jeevan-44, from which I have taken today’s song, I found his name and I decided that I must bring this unique personality before our readers. He is none other than BADRI PRASAD.

Yes he is the same Badri Prasad whom you must have seen in several films doing side roles of father, Uncle etc. His roles which I remember even today are Bhagwan’s father in Albela-51, Shashikala and Smriti Biswas’s Uncle in Bhagam Bhag-54(His role name was also Badri Prasad in that film) and Nalini Jayawant’s lost father in ‘Hum sab chor hai’-56

His contribution to the film industry is tremendous.

As actor he acted in 147 films,

As a singer he sang in 7 films(His last song was in Ahinsa-79, with Asha,Rafi and chorus). He sang 11 songs.

As a composer he gave music to 16 films in 8 years. He composed 168 songs.

And As a Choreographer he worked in about 30 films.

As a lyricist he wrote in 1 film-8 songs

He also produced and Directed 1 film each.

( I can think of only Kishore kumar who did many things, but in only in his own films, except choreography.)

BADRI PRASAD was born on 14-11-1902,in Benaras, UP. He started acting in Ramleela in the Bhelpura area in Benaras. From there he reached Calcutta, spent time with New Theatres and other studios and thenlanded in Bombay in 1932. His first film as actor was Navchetan-1932..

Then he worked as an assistant to some composers and gave music firs time to Bala Joban-1934. Then came Vishnu Bhakti, Fashionable India,Romantic India, Badhe Chalo, Swaraj ke Sipahi, Anuradha, Double cross,Himalaya ki beti, Yangrila, Zambo the ape man, Zambo ka beta, JhootiSharm, Madhusudan, Vanmala and his last film as a composer wasZevar-1942.

Then he continued working in character roles. In 1949 he first didChoreography in Namoona-49. After that for next 40 years hechoreographed in films till his last film Shoor veer-1988.

He continued acting till his last film Dhoop chaon-1977- a period of 44 years.

As a composer many famous singers sang for him, like Amirbai Karnataki, Noorjehan, Snehlata, Shyamsunder, Radharani, Sarla Devi, Ameen, Gauhar, E Rama Rao, Ramanand, Vatsala Kumthekar , Vimla Kumari, Iqbal Bibi etc etc.

Badriprasad was a learned man with command over Hindi, Urdu, English and Sanskrit. He wrote many plays for AIR also. He had a very big collection of books in his house. He was called Pandit Badriprasad, due to his expertise in Sanskrit.

He was a man of few words,so his fabulous career remained unknown and he was known only as a character artist.

He had 2 daughters. One daughter Surekha Pandit remained with him till his death. Surekha too was an actress, doing bit roles in films ( Anupama, Mere sanam, Nartaki, Gaban, Sant Gyaneshwar, Mere Huzur, Aadmi aur Insaan, Saat Hindustani, Do dooni chaar, Shehar aur sapna,Aarti etc etc.). After marriage she was known as Surekha Parkar.

( I thank shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji for information used here.)

By 1944, Naushad had got hold of his music and the way to melody. Although he had a choice among the female Playback singers, it is seen from his film songs of the early 40s that he had opted for a particular singer for some period for some films, then he would switch over to some other singer. Nirmala sang for Naushad for the first time in Sharada-42. Naushad gave her 5 songs in this movie. She sang in Kanoon-43 (4 songs), Geet-44 (5 songs) and Jeevan-44 (2 songs). He did not use Nirmala after 1944, not even for his biggest Hit-Rattan-44. He opted for Zohrabai in this movie. Earlier to Nirmala it was Rajkumari for him. Later it was only Zohrabai. From 46, it was Shamshad and then Lata took over.

Today’s song became quite popular those days and Nirmala benefitted from its popularity as other composers started using her voice.

From Sharda-42 to Dard-47, out of 15 films, except for films Geet and Jeevan-both from 44, all other films of Naushad had enjoyed Jubilee runs. However, in my opinion, this song of Nirmala from film Jeevan-44 can be claimed as one of Naushad’s better songs, prior to Rattan-44.

Let us now enjoy this song…..

Song-Ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na (Jeewan)(1944) Singer-Nirmala Devi, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na
ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na
tere bin chain kahaan paaungi ee ee
tere bin chain kahaan paaungi
chhod ke ye dar kahaan jaaungi
chhod ke ye dar kahaan jaaungi

sundar sapna toot na jaaye
saath dilon ka chhoot na jaaye
sundar sapna toot na jaaye
saath dilon ka chhoot na jaaye
is nindiya se jaagna na
is nindiya se jaagna na
ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na
ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na

ghadiyaan judaai ki na aaye ab
ghadiyaan judaai ki na aaye ab
ik doosre mein bas jaayen ab
ik doosre mein bas jaayen ab
virha ke dukh sah na sakoongi
roungi kuchh kah na sakungi
virha ke dukh sah na sakoongi
roungi kuchh kah na sakoongi
is nindiya se jaagna na
is nindiya se jaagna na
ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na
ankhiyaan mila ke bhaagna na

Arunji,
Lucky you. Hope you will be able to extract more info on Bimalda.

Recently I was travelling to Indore. I was reading a newspaper and humming very softly taqdeer ka fasana. An old portly man picked up the thread and started singing the same song. He made me sing many songs. I introduced him to NFS. This went on till 2 am. Thankfully no one objected; in fact they seemed to enjoy it and some joined in.
Well Badri Prasad is my fav character after OP. Wow what a combination : prodigious mustache and dhoti. Of course he was not sporting it in real life. I used to see him quite often in Shivaji Park. He was pinkish. Very handsome personality. Regret I could not be pally with him as I was with Kanhaiyalal.

Thank you Arunji for introducing another contributor, Badri Prasad of Hindi cinema. I knew him only as a character actor. Never would have known about his vast contribution in Hindi cinema if you had not written this post. Your every post is truly a treasure for me.
Thanks again
Regards
Khyati
