VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No- 6
—————————————-
Today’s song is duet of Shamshad Begum and G M Durani.

There were 51 films having the word Ghar in their Titles that were released from 1931 to 2012. ‘Ghar’ was made 2 times, Ghar ghar ki kahai-3, Ghar Jamai-2, Ghar Grihisthi-2, Ghar ka chirag-2, Ghar ki izzat-2, Ghar ki Laaj-3, Ghar ki Laxmi-2, Ghar sansar-3, Gharana-2, Gharonda-2, Gharbaar-3, Gharwali Baharwali-2 and a funny Title “Ghar mein ho saali to poora saal Diwali ” was made in 2001.

1948 was an year in which the Film Industry was trying to cope up with the trauma of Partition and loss of many talented artistes due to Migration. Dilip Kumar’s first superhit film ‘Shaheed’ was made by Filmistan and Bombay Talkies made ‘Majboor’ on the issue of partition. Raj Kapoor established his R.K.Films and made “Aag” as a Director also. In 6 out of 8 songs, Shamshad Begum sang her songs with Mukesh and Sailesh in this movie.6 singers were used by Ram Ganguly the Music Director of this movie. There were other musicals like Pyar ki Jeet and Mela also in this year.

Dev Anand’s first successful film Ziddi was also the first film where Kishore Kumar gave playback for Dev Anand. Other hit films of the year were Anokhi ada, Anokha pyar, Nadiya ke paar, Vidya and Suhag Raat, the debut film for Geeta Bali.

Film Ghar ki izzat was a mix story of 3 couples. If you see the cast of this film, you will find a name DIXIT. This name will not mean anything to the new generation, but the 30s and the 40s belonged to a comedy pair- Ghory and Dixit. They were the Indian Laurel and Hardy. Ghory was Laurel and Dixit was Hardy. They were fixtures in almost every Ranjit film.

Manohar Janardhan Dixit was born on 12-11-1906 at Sinner in Nashik district, Maharashtra (Bombay state at that time.) His comedy career started with the silent film ‘Sparkling youth’-1930. His first day of work in a film was 14-11-19. He did 3 more silent films with Navjivan Films and then joined Ranjit studio. Here he met his mate Nazir Ahmed Ghori, born on 11-8-1901 at Bombay. He was the senior of the two, having started in 1927. He worked till 1931 in silent films of various companies and then joined Ranjit studio in 1931. Here too he did 4 silent films.

He paired with Dixit for the first time in Char Chakram-1932, directed by Jayant Desai. The film was a terrific hit and the pair did many films together like, Bhutia mahal, Do badmash, Bhola shikar, Bhool bhulaiya, Vishwamohini, Nadira etc. They worked together till 1947, doing solo films also in between. Unfortunately none of their films have survived and we know about their acting only through Photographs, interviews and articles. However Dixit’s solo films like pehle aap-44, Jeevan yatra-46, Aap ki sewa mein-47 and Pugree-47 are still available. In the film Pugree, his name was Ramu kaka and the very fat Dixit (222 pounds) carried the world’s smallest dog-Chikoo in the film. Later comedian Omprakash did this role in the remake of the film in Dil Daulat Duniya-1972.

Dixit acted in 66 Talkie films and 4 silent films in 17 years. He died on 29-6-1949 due to a massive heart attack. His partner Ghori migrated to Pakistan and did 8 films there till 1960, without much success. He died on 9-12-1977 at Karachi.

Ghar ki Izzat-48 was directed by Ram Daryani and its cast was Mumtaz Shanti, Dilip Kumar, Jeevan, Manorama, Gope etc etc. Compared to young Dilip Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti was more successful and experienced with films like Basant and Kismet. She had worked with Top actors like Ashok Kumar. In the video of this song, you can see an awckward Dilip kumar and a vibrant and seasoned actress Mumtaz Shanti.

Mumtaz Shanti or Mumtaz Begum was born in 1922 at village Dinga in Punjab (now in Pakistan). She lost her parents early and she was brought up by her uncle who was a Police constable. After his transfer to Lahore, Mumtaz was able to continue her schooling. She learnt dancing and Music. She was also an expert in househole chores. She was first rejected by Shorey Pictures, but then the famous writer/Lyricist Wali Saheb helped her and took her to Calcutta’s East India Film co. to work in a Punjabi film ‘Sohni Kumharan’-37. She also did another Punjabi film ‘Chambai ki Dali’41 in Calcutta. meanwhile, she was invited by Shorey pictures to Lahore to act in their Punjabi film ‘Mangti ‘-42. This film ran for 65 weeks giving her name and fame.

Rai bahadur Chunilal Of Bombay Talkies offered her a role in their film Basant-42. She came to Bombay and did Basant and Kismet-43. Both the films were hits all over India. Mumtaz was good looking, tall and slithe, so looked attractive. After Kismet she became a freelancer and worked with many different studios in Badalti Duniya and Sawal-43, Bharthari, Lady Doctor and Pagli Duniya-44, Chand chakori-45, Shravan Kumar, Dharati, Magadhraj and Pujari-46, Dekhojee and Doosri shadi-47, Padmini, Heer Ranjha and Ghar ki izzat-48, Putali, Biwi and Aahuti-50. Her last film in India was Zamane ki Hawa-52. In all she worked in 21 Hindi and 4 Punjai films. She did 2 films in Calcutta, 4 in Lahore and the rest in Bombay.

She married Lyricist/writer/Director Wali Saheb in 1947. He directed her in 3 films in India. He was very strict and forced her to come to studios in Burqa. She was not allowed to talk to anyone. They migrated to Pakistan after 1953. She retired from films and remained a housewife only. Walisaheb did 3-4 films without much success. He died in 1977. Mumtaz Shanti also died in 93/94, unsung and unknown in Pakistan.

Today’s duet is with G M Durani, who was a major singer of that time. Shamshad Begum sang about 20 duets with Durani in all. Her voice fitted suitably to the boisterous Mumtaz Shanti. She acted naturally but Dilip Kumar looks lost and mechanical in this song. Enjoy this song…….

Lyrics

Taaron ki toliyon pe kaisa hai ye nikhaar
taaron ki toliyon pe kaisa hai ye nikhaar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar

taaron ki toliyon pe kaisa hai ye nikhaar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar
aasmaan pe aaj ek mehmaan aayega
wo noor saari duniya pe apna lutaayega
aasmaan pe aaj ek mehmaan aayega
wo noor saari duniya pe apna lutaayega

nikla nahin hai chaand
sitaare hain beqaraar
nikla nahin hai chaand
sitaare hain beqaraar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar

chanda ka intezaar hai
chanda ka intezaar
taaron ki toliyon pe kaisa hai ye nikhaar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar

har saans mera naghma
dhadkan meri taraana
har saans mera naghma
dhadkan meri taraana
khaamosh ki jubaan pe khaamosh ka fasaana
khaamosh ki jubaan pe khaamosh ka fasaana

baj raha hai apne aap dil ka taar taar
baj raha hai apne aap dil ka taar taar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar

chanda ka intezaar hai
chanda ka intezaar
taaron ki toliyon pe kaisa hai ye nikhaar
hai kiska intezaar
hai kiska intezaar
