Making movies is a business venture, and that too a risky business venture where there is no assurance of earning a profit on one’s investment. In movie making, the producer typically raises the finances, gigns up director, technicians, artists etc and makes a film. Later he gets the movie released in theatres. If he is lucky, the movie may do well, but in most cases the movie may fail to attract movie wathers and the investment made in making that movie goes down the drain.

A good number of movie makers have the resources to sigh up good quality personnel for their movies which helps them sell their movies to the public through distributors. Even small budget movie makers, including C grade movie makers rely on time tested business model of movie making and they make decent enough profit on their movies to keep in the business.

Then there are some cases where the movie maker may be a rank novice. He may neither have the money nor contacts to make movies but he would still like to make a movie by one way or the other, singing up cheap/ free artists hoping that his movie would launch him overnight to the big league.

“Uski Kahaani”(1966) was one such movie. This movie was produced by a company called Sight and Sound, Bombay. The producer signed up new and/or struggling artists who would work for free in the movie. They signed up Basu Bhattacharya (debutant) as the director. An out of work Kanu Roy (debutant) was signed up as the music director.

They then looked for a lyricist. They found out that Kaifi Azmi was out of work. They went to his house and found out from him that Kaifi Azmi was actually out of work. They offered him the job of lyricist as well as screenplay writer. Just when Kaifi Azmi was dreaming of having a financially secure future, he was told that he will have to work for free. “We will think about your remunerations in case the movie succeeds”- he was told.

Not just that, the makers of the movie used Kaifi Azmi to convince others to work for free in the movie. Kaifi Azmi used his goodwill to convince Geeta Dutt to sing a song for free for this movie. This song, already discussed in the blog, is the only reason why this song is still remembered to this day.

Struggling artists, many of them looking for their initial breaks in movies, were signed up as actors. The movie had Anju Mahendru (debutant), Tarun Ghosh, Satyendra Athaiyya, Dina Gandhi, Milan, A Shaqoor, Anand Kumar, Archana Kapoor, Sushma, Dolly Bhattacharya, Geeta Purohit, Dr D M Dayal, Geetanjali, Mathur, Gurnam, Sunil, Shanti Mahendru, N M Etoda, Saeeda Khan, Manmohan, Madhavi etc. in it.

The movie makers managed to rope in Hemant Kumar too to sing a song, free of course, I am sure. The Geeta Dutt song, as well as this Hemant Kumar songs were the only two songs in this movie. I suppose that the movie makers were not able to get any more songs recorded for free.

The movie ended up as a resounding flop at the box office. The movie maker cut his losses and vanishes, without paying any of the artists their dues.

The two songs of this movie were nearly six minutes long each and their record numbers are different. So it means that these two songs were recorded on both sides of the record and that way both of these songs were multi part songs. But HFGK mentions these two songs as two solitary songs, and that is the convention we will follow as well.

Here is this second and final song from “Uski Kahaani”(1966). The song is sung by Hemant Kumar. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kanu Roy.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this movie as well as on the picturisation of this extremely rare song.

With this song, “Uski Kahaani”(1966) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

tera hai jahaan saara
apna magar koi nahin hai
tera hai jahaan saara
apna magar koi nahin hai
jaana hai kahin tujhe
pyaasa kahin se kahin hai
tera hai jahaan saara
apna magar koi nahin hai

toone to kaha nahin dil ka fasaana
phir bhi hai kuchh bujha bujha saara zamaana
toone to kaha nahin dil ka fasaana
phir bhi hai kuchh bujha bujha saara zamaana
jiska kal ?? thha
aaj usi ka yaqeen hai
tera hai jahaan saara
apna magar koi nahin hai

dil ko tere sukoon kabhi aaya na aaye ae
aankhon mein leke gham wahaan jaaye na jaaye ae
dil ko tere sukoon kabhi aaya na aaye ae
aankhon mein leke gham wahaan jaaye na jaaye ae
uthha hai jahaan se tu
tera thhikaana wahi hai
tera hai jahaan saara
apna magar koi nahin hai
jaana hai kahin tujhe
jaata kahin se kahin hai
tera hai jahaan saara
apna magar koi nahin hai
