“Kangan” (1959) was a Uma shankar Productions movie. It was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Bhagwan, Manhar Desai, Purnima, Daisy Irani, Shammi, Tiwari etc in it.
Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Today (6 june 2016) is the 96th birth anniversary of Rajinder Krishan (6 june 1919-23 september 1987). Here is a song from “Kangan”(1959) on this occasion.
This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.
The picturisation takes place is a family get together situation where Ashok Kumar has invited his near and dear ones for some family function and a nautch girl has been hired to perform a dance on the occasion. The gathering has Ashok Kumar, Manhar Desai, Nazir Hussain, Daisy Irani, Nirupa Roy, Shammi- in short, almost the entire star cast of the movie is present on the occasion. 🙂
And who is the dancer who is performing ? She looked familiar to me but I was unable to identify her. But then it struck me that she was none other than Helen herself ! We are so used to seeing her in cabarat dance costumes that we often cannot believe our eyes when we see her in desi costumes. 🙂 But here she is, performing a desi dance in front of a suitably desi looking audience, accompanied by a folk music based tune.

I think the song ends with Nirupa Roy being led to her suhaag raat maybe with Ashok Kumar.
There is Jagdish Raj(with Ashok Kumar) the pernnial polliceman. There is Mridula seating next to Nirupa Rai, Bhagwan (with Shammi) Tiwari smoking. I could not locate Manhar Desai.

Ashok kumar and 3 films named ” Kangan.”…
Ashok kumar acted in his first ‘Kangan’ film in 1939. He was 28 years old. His Heroine was Leela Chitnis. They later acted together in 3 more films,Azaad,Bandhan and Kiran.
The second ‘Kangan’ was in 1959(the above film). He was 48 years old. He did the role of Husband of Nirupa Roy and Purnima’s brother. Actually this story by Shashi Bhushan was liked by Guru Dutt and he was keen to make a film and become the Hero,but….it did not happen.Instead,Nanabhai Bhatt made this film.
The 3rd Kangan film came in 1971. Ashok kumar was 60 years old. He did the role of the old husband of Mala Sinha,in it.
Not only this much, but one film Úlzan’ was made in 1975 on this story. Ashok kumar had acted in this film too,as a police Inspector.
Sometimes one can not explain these connections !
