June 6th is Sunil Dutt’s birth anniversary. He was born in 1929, so we celebrate his 86th birthday. His debut film was Railway Platform (1955). The role of the idealist, who wants to change the society, would follow him for most part of the 50s. In 1963 he donned the role of a dacoit Thakur Jarnail Singh, which was quite unusual for the times. In fact, it was sort of an extension of his role in Mother India (1957). Dacoit roles would haunt him for the rest of his career. He did meaningful films, particularly with Chopra brothers in the 60s. His magnum opus Reshma aur Shera (1972) though left him in financial doldrums, which sent him on a film-signing spree throughout the 70s. At first it was to pay back his debts and later for the cancer treatment of his wife. He took leave of his career as a leading man after launching his son in Rocky (1981) with the film Dard Ka Rishta (1982).
In Dard Ka Rishta (1982), he could also process his pain of losing his wife to pancreatic cancer. The film is about a young cancer patient, who is Sunil Dutt’s daughter. The song below shows his life before this tragedy, while he was living in New York with his first wife (Smita Patil). He is getting nostalgic in this song and remembering the good times in India, as most of the immigrants often feel about their home country.
A ghazal composed by R. D. Burman is somewhat rare. Kishore Kumar singing a ghazal is also quite a rare phenomenon. Enjoy this coming together of two phenomena.
Sunil Duttji, thank you for the legacy of films, which you left behind. You still provide us with entertainment and idealism with your roles!

Song-Yoon neend se wo jaan-e-chaman (Dard Ka Rishta)(1982) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
yoon neend se wo jaan-e-chaman
jaag uthhi hai ae
yoon neend se wo jaan-e-chaman
jaag uthhi hai
pardes mein phir yaad-e-watan
jaag uthhi hai ae
yoon neend se wo jaana-e-chaman
phir yaad hamen aaye hain
saawan ke wo jhoole
phir yaad hamen aaye hain
saawan ke wo jhoole ae
wo bhool gaye hamko
unhen ham nahin bhoole ae
unhen ham nahin bhoole ae
is dard ke kaanton ki chubhan
jaag uthhi hai ae
pardes mein phir yaad-e-watan
jaag uthhi hai ae
is shahar se achchhaa thhaa
bahut apnaa wo gaaon
is shahar se achchhaa thhaa
bahut apnaa wo gaaon
panghat hai yahaan koi naa
peepal ki wo chhaaon
peepal ki wo chhaaon
pashchim mein wo poorab ki pawan
jaag uthhi hai ae
pardes mein phir yaad-e-watan
jaag uthhi hai ae
yoon neend se wo jaan-e-chaman
ham log sayaane sahi
deewaane hain lekin
begaane bahut achchhe hain
begaane hain lekin
begaane hain lekin
begaanon mein apno ki lagan
jaag uthhi hai ae
pardes mein phir yaad-e-watan
jaag uthhi hai ae
yoon neend se wo jaan-e-chaman
jaag uthhi hai

I may be wrong, but this is a geet and not a ghazal. Three lines in the Ankara, two in the mukhda. I remember listening to this song then!

now to see all that i have missed in the last 20 days.
and i have to thank Harveypam for this wonderful rare song from RDB- KK combo. i used to love it back then and knew every word in there. but i had forgotten a few lines in all these years. purani yaadein taaza ho gayi!!!

Hello,
You are right, this is a ‘puraani yaaden taaza’ karnewala song. I was able to guess the tune which sounded familiar before I heard the song, maybe after 30 odd years. Used to a regular on radio during that time. Anand Bakshi’s words in all stanza’s too were in the memory.
There is some other more familiar song in the same tune. I am not able to grasp it , lekin same tune mein doosa gaana hai zarur.
This is not a ghazal for sure.

Thank you Prakashchandraji!
I looked at that scene 4-5 times, but I couldn’t recognise her. Now that you say, who she is, I do see it.
