Fabulous Foot Tappers – 4

Once in an interview, Hemant Kumar had the following to say about the very interesting working style of Rajendra Krishan – “. . .once the recording date got fixed, he would keep in touch with the music director.  He would come and meet regularly in the studios.  But he won’t work. One day, it will be a lunch outing at a place which offers a famous specialty.  The next day it will be something else.  The recording date is drawing near, but the lyrics are nowhere in sight.  One day he will come to studio then go to the races.  When just two or three days would be left before the recording date, we would start pestering and pressurizing him.  He would then just smile and go sit in quiet corner, and then come back after 15 or 20 minutes with the completed song.”

Remembering Rajendra Krishan on his birth anniversary today (6th June). Born in 1919, he would have been 97 years old today.

The mention of races is interesting.  He had once won a huge jackpot betting on the horses.  An amount of nearly 5 Lac rupees was considered king’s ransom in the 1970s.  He would be the riches lyricist in the tinsel town after that.

Rajendra Krishan is probably the most prolific song writer in the Hindi film industry.  Geet Kosh, which currently records data only till 1980, indicates that he has written close to 1500 songs from 1947, his debut year, till 1980.  And we need to add his output from 1981 onwards.  He passed away in 1987, but films containing songs written by him continued to be released almost till 1994-95.

Talking of races and race course, I am sure Rajendra Krishan would have been a very regular visitor to Mahalaxmi, the race course in Bombay.  And then, he also got to write the lyrics for a film by the same name – ‘Bombay Race Course’.  Directed by Kedar Kapoor for PR Films, Bombay, this movie was released in 1965.  The main cast of actors is listed as Nalini Jaywant, Ajeet, K N Singh, Murad, Johnny Walker, and Meenu Mumtaz.  The six songs in this film are all penned by Rajendra Krishan. Music compositions are from the baton of Madan Mohan.  A surprising one at that, I mean this song.  The pace, the rhythm and the use of instrument seem all so different.  But then here it is – yes, Madan Mohan.

Singing voice is Asha Bhosle.  A fabulous rendition, and a fabulous foot tapping number this turns out to be.  Listen and enjoy.

Song – Pehle Khoon Kharaaba Peechhe Shor Sharaaba (Bombay Race Course) (1965) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Rajinder Krishan, MD – Madan Mohan

Lyrics

pehle khoon khraaba
peechhe shor shraaba
pyaar ke dhandhe mein na pad
apne raste chal babba
pehle khoon khraaba
peechhe shor shraaba
pyaar ke dhandhe mein na pad
apne raste chal babba
pehle khoon khraaba
peechhe shor shraaba

bhool bhulaino mein na jaa
reham jawaani pe kuchh kha
bhool bhulaino mein na jaa
reham jawaani pe kuchh kha
sun deewaane
sun deewaane
door ke dhol suhaane
dil na lagaa
oy dil na lagaa
teri meri pyaar ki sadken
apne raste chal babba
pehle khoon khraaba
peechhe shor shraaba
pyaar ke dhandhe mein na pad
apne raste chal babba
pehle khoon khraabbaaa
peechhe shor shraabbaaa

dohri zulfon ke ye naag
in ki chhaaon mein hai aag
dohri zulfon ke ye naag
in ki chhaaon mein hai aag
jaan jalaa ke rakh denge ye
bhaag
bhaag
arre bhaag yahaan se bhaag
pyaar ki baazi khel nahin hai
apne raste chal babba
pehle khoon khraaba
peechhe shor shraaba
pyaar ke dhandhe mein na pad
apne raste chal baabba
pehle khoon khraabbaaa
peechhe shor shraabbaaa

It was I believe some Rs 46 lakhs(Rs 4,600,000.00) he won in the jackpot.
I have special remembrance of RK as I was fortunate to read my songs to the great lyricists. He also gave me a situation on which I wrote a song, which was much appreciated by him. I give below again for those who missed it last time.
:
kisi ka yuun armaan kuchalna munaseeb nahi hai yeh meri kamnaseebi hai mera naseeb nahi hai

tune mere kokh ki ruswaai karke mitaaya hai suhaag abb to bujhaaye nahi bujhti mere dil ki aag

har modh pe suqoon diya hamne raah e zindagi mein aaj maalum huwa kitni hai zafa aadmi mein

pehale mile thhe ham main chur thhi teri yaad mein abb wahi dukhiya abhagan chur hai naashaad mein

tune saath rehane ka mujhse kiya thhaa vaada abb na jaane kaise badal gaya tera iraada

The last 2 lines were liked by him very much as it conveyed the situation beautifully.
