THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS ….Song No. 7
————————————————–

This is a duet from the film Gharbar-53 and it is sung by Talat and Asha Bhonsle.

1953 was a period when Talat was getting settled as a Playback singer, having given some Timeless gems. His name was being associated with evergreen songs from films like Arzoo, Babul, Jaan Pehchan, Daag, Do Raha, Parchhain, Sangdil, Aas, Footpath, Bewafaa, Ashiana, Anhonee, Madhosh, Buzdil etc etc.

He had started his career with singing, then he did acting in few films in Calcutta, next he fell back on singing and this second innings in singing proved to be an excellent phase of his singing career for him. His name became famous. Leading composers lined up at his door step to get his Recording dates, except Naushad-for by now well known reasons. When Talat was enjoying the best phase of his career as a singer, bad luck called on him and he gladly agreed to do a film for Kardar- “Dil E Nadaan”-53. The film flopped but his songs like ‘zindagi dene waale sun’ by composer Ghulam Mohammed became a rage.

Talat could not judge the message that came from the markets. He was a failure as an Actor, but still popular as a Singer. Unfortunately without realising this Talat went on to act in seven more films like Waaris and Daak babu-54, Raftaar-55, Deewali ki raat-56, Ek Gaon ki Kahani-57 and Sone ki chidiya and Lala Rukh-58. All the films flopped but his songs from thiese movies became hits. By the time he learnt a lesson and returned to singing, it was too late. All this has been discussed several times. The third coming back of Talat as a Singer was not successful and he was on the downhill career wise ever since !

While he was busy in acting in films, the musical trends, unknown to him, had undergone changes and newer composers had emerged. Other playback singers had consolidated their positions and Talat was left high and dry. Then he fell back on doing stage shows and cutting Ghazal albums and singing NFS.

Whatever Talat was in the professional field, he was an ideal husband and a doting father as a family man. Recently, I got a Complimentary copy of a new book,”Talat Mahmood-The Velvet voice” written by Manek Premchand. Talat had a son and a daughter. Both have written small articles on their father in this book. His daughter Sabina Rana says in it, (roughly reproduced).

“He always made it a point to drop me and pick me up from my school everyday. Even if his recording or rehearsal was there, he used to come on time to take me from school. Like any other girl in those days, I was a hugh fan of Rajesh Khanna and naturally Kishore Kumar. My father would buy me all the latest LPs of Kishore Kumar and we would listen to them together.

“Once there was a Kishore Kumar concert at Shanmukhanand hall in Bombay. I was very keen to attend it. My father went to the hall personally, stood in the line and bought tickets. We both went to the show and sat amidst the audience. Someone recognised my father and the news reached Kishore Kumar. He announced in the Hall that a great singer Talat is present in the auditorium. We were taken to the stage where Kishore hugged us. Such was the humility of my father ! ”

When Sabine brought Rajindersingh ji Rana to her house and announced their love and desire to marry, Talat agreed and got them married happily. Talat himself had married a Christian girl-Latika Mullick( she was converted and became Nasreen). Even her brother married a Hindu girl ( and then converted her). Sabina however remained a Muslim even after marriage. The only regret Sabina has was that she was out of India and could not see him last time at the time of Talat’s death .

Today’s song is from the film Gharbar-53. The Music Director of this film was Vasant Prabhu. This was the only film he did in Hindi, but Vasant Prabhu was almost a legend in Marathi music.

Vasant Prabhu was born on 19-1-1924 at Bombay. While still young, he learnt Kathak dancing and classical music. He was a tall, handsome and well built young man. He wanted to become an Actor, so he went to Kolhapur, then to Poona and finally landed in Bombay.

Here he did not get any actors role, but he joined HMV as a Music composer.

While here, he started composing Marathi Bhavgeets. Vasant Prabhu, Lata Mangeshkar and Lyricist P. Savalaram created many iconic Marathi songs together during the period from from 1948 to 1965.

His first song was sung by Lata ji,” Ganga yamuna dolyat ubhya kaa…” in 1948. This song became so famous overnight that after more than 65 years, even today it is played on AIR and in almost every Marathi wedding band party in Maharashtra. This is song of Bidaai, sung so soulfully and the wordings are so meaningful that sensitive women start weeping listening to this song.

While at HMV, Vasant Prabhu also composed some NFS for Lata ji and Geeta Dutt in Hindi. One of Geeta ji’s songs, “Jamuna ke teer kanha aao” is extremely popular with Geeta lovers.

Vasant Prabhu’s name is written in Gold for the Marathi bhavgeets that he composed with Lata and Savalaram Patil.

Vasant started his film career with the Marathi film ‘Ram Ram pavhana’-1950 by choreographing a few dances and composing its music too. From 1950 to 1970 he gave music in 22 Marathi films, while doing private albums also.

He was the Music Director for most Marathi films produced by Lata ji’s ‘Surel Chitra Production company. In film ” Vaadal” he composed a Thumari in such a wonderful manner that when this film was released in Nagpur the Audience wanted to listen to the Thumari again and again, and threatened to burn the theatre down if that was not done. Finally that Thumari was shown 5 times that day showon that !

in another film,’Taaraka’, he made actress Sulochana Latkar do an item number in the film. Probably she danced the first and last time in her life in this song.

Singers like Phiroze dastoor and Talat Mehmood also sang for his Marathi films.

In 1953 he did his only Hindi film “GHARBAAR”-53. There were 8 songs in the films sung by Rajkumari, Lata, Asha, Talat Mehmood and Surendra.

Vasant Prabhu was a very honest, punctual, straight forward, disciplined and hot tempered person. He never went to anyone to ask for work. Of course work always came to him. He used to compose his tunes lying down in his balcony.

Vasant prabhu died on 13-10-1967.

(info from book ‘Manasi cha Chitrakaar’ and Sangeetkar Kosh by Madhu Potdar, with thanks).

Let us now enjoy this duet of Asha and Talat from “Gharbaar”(1953). Indeewar is the lyricist of this song which is composed by Vasant Prabhu.

What a pity he was used once only. Its a HF’s loss.
The stars were Sulochna Chatterjee and Surendranath which explains his song in the movie.
