EID MUBARAK to all readers.

On this occasion, I am posting a special song for my special friends. Hope you will enjoy it.

I believe, today’s Eid is one of the two most important Eids, for the Muslims. As per Wiki, this is what today’s Eid is-

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‎ ʿīd al-aḍḥā, [ʕiːd ælˈʔɑdˤħæ]), also called the Feast of Sacrifice (Turkish: Kurban Bayramı;Malay: Hari Raya Korban; Persian: عید قربان‎ `īd-e qorbān), the Greater Eid, or Bakr-Eid (Urdu: بقر عید‎ baqr `īd), is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year. It honors the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son, as an act of submission to God’s command, before God then intervened, through his angel Jibra’il and informs him that his sacrifice has already been accepted. The meat from the sacrificed animal is preferred to be divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy.

One advantage I had in my life was that I was born and brought up in the state of Hyderabad. Ruled by a Muslim king-The Nizam-, 85% population was Hindu. It was a Multi-Lingual state, so I was introduced to various festivals celebrated by Muslims, Telugus, Kannadigas and Marathis.

I had many Muslim friends. Barring the eventful years of 1947( Partition of India) and 1948 (Police action to liberate Hyderabad state from Nizam ), there was great bonhomie and friendly atmosphere in the state. All festivals, Dashehra, Diwali, Eids and Christmas were celebrated by all. On the days of Diwali, our sweets used to go to Muslim friends and during Eids, Biryani and Sheer Khurma was delivered to our house. Holi and Kite Flying had no religions. Even Rakhis were tied by Muslims and Hindus to “Mooh-boli” Behnas.

I have very sweet memories of Eid celebrations. Our Muslim friends used to don new clothes and come to visit us. Gone are those days with changing times !

It is impossible to find an educated person who has not read the stories of Alibaba, Allaudin and Sindbad, in his childhood. Without these stories the childhood was incomplete. These Arabian Nights stories gave us immense pleasures in our childhood. So much so that when I grew up,I did not leave a single film of these Heroes unseen. These Heroes were the central figures in films made in every language in India and none of them lacked audience patronage. However, it was great fun to listen to Alibaba or Allauddin talk in Telugu or Tamil !

These stories were filmed since the Silent film days. On reaching a saturation point with the original stories, clever writers from the ‘story departments’ of producers invented various relatives like Alibaba ka Beta or Allauddin ki Ladki etc. One creative producer even made a film “Sindbad, Alibaba, Alladin” in 1965 !

Today’s song is from the film “Sim Sim Marjeena”-1958. This film was made as a sequel of the film “Khul jaa Sim Sim “-56. Both films were made by Mulkraj Bhakri, under his own banner-Golden movies. Almost all the cast was same, barring a few, but the composers were different. For the 1956 film it was Hansraj Behl and for today’s film it was A.R.Qureshi.

A.R.Qureshi or Alla Rakha Qureshi was from Jammu. he started with classical music but soon changed over to Tabla. He came to Bombay in 1937. He started giving music to films with ‘Mahasati Anusuya’-43. He worked mostly in films made by Hind Pictures, Magnet films, Sunrise films and Mohan studios of Dave brothers. Barring 1 or 2 films like “Bewafa”-52, he got only C grade stunt films or Muslim ibaadati films. He gave music in about 30 films. From 1958 onwards, he joined Ravishankar as a Tabala exponent and toured all over the world. he died on 3-2-2000. He was the father of Zakir Hussain -the Tabla expert of world fame.
There were ten songs in the film and today’s song is just the second song from the movie to be posted here.

The story of the film was-

The moment Khakan was told that his borhter, Beharam, the leader of the 40 theives, had been murdered by Marjeena, he decided to take revenge from her. He alongwith Kamran and Gulbadan, the dancer, during their journey, happened to stay in that deserted cave which was once full with heaps of wealth and the atmosphere rung with laughters. Sim Sim, who used to open the gate of the cave with the command “Khul Ja Sim Sim”, was still imprisoned in the vault hungry and thirsty.

Khakan set him free and Sim Sim narrated his his sorrowful tale. He stated that years ago he was a merchant. Unfortunanately ond day he happened to go to a cafe, where Marjeena, the embodyment of beauty was entertaining the audiance with her dance. He lost himself at her gestures. His business was ruined and he turned crazy for that dame, Marjeena. With that very craze, he decided to have Marjeena, at any cost. One day he again dropped in the cafe, fought desperately, gave severe blows to everybody, damaged the cafe and carried away crying Marjeena.

On his way back to his country, his Caravan was attacked by Beharam alongwith his 40 theves. Marjeena was made the object of entertainment for the thieves and he was imprisoned. Khakan assured Sim Sim that he would help him in securing Marjeena. In those days Ali Baba, Marjeena and the King had gone for Haj. Khakan came to Ali Baba and started living there. Dilgir and Nazakat, the servants of Ali Baba were led away by him. They started to indulge in drinking and merry making.

The pious Saint appeared there and warned them for these sins. Khakan was enraged and he ordered his servants to have him arrested. But they were all turned into statues and the Saint disappeared. When Khakan came to know that this very Saint had been helping Ali Baba and Marjeena in every difficulty, he decided to finish him off but the Saint was shielded every time by Supernatural powers. Khakan so manupulated the affairs that Sim Sim was arrested, the past history of Marjeena’s life was brought to light and hatred was thereby created in All Baba’s mind hence Marjeena was again rendered helpless and miserable.

In this case the Saint talked to Alibaba and removed all his misunderstandings about Marjeena. Alibaba together with Marjeena and his friends attacked Khakan and killed him. Sim Sim was pardoned and he left the country for ever.

Song-Mere Aaka Hain Shaah e Madeena (Sim Sim Marjeena) (1958) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Asad Bhopali, MD – AR Qureshi

mere aaka hain shaah e madina aa
mere aaka hain shaah e madina
ab yahi iltija hai khuda se
kamli waale ka daaman na chhoote
jaan jaati hai jaaye balaa se ae
mere aaka hain shaah e madina aa
mere aaka hain shaah e madina

sabz gumbaz ka paakeeza manzar
sabz gumbaz ka paakeeza manzar
rah gaya hai nigaahon mein bas kar
rah gaya hai nigaahno mein bas kar
door reh kar bhi kadmon se unke
dekhta hoon unhen har jagah se
kamli waale ka daaman na chhoote
jaan jaati hai jaaye balaa se
mere aaka hain shaah e madina
mere aaka hain shaah e madina

apne bandon pe rahmat ka saaya aa
apne bandon pe rahmat ka saaya
rakhna har haal mein tu khudaaya aa
rakhna har haal mein tu khudaaya
shamm e imaan bujhne na paaye
is zamaane ki zaalim hawa se
kamli waale ka daaman na chhoote ae
jaan jaati hai jaaye balaa se
mere aaka hain shaahe madina
mere aaka hain shaahe madina

main hoon deewaana ishq e nabi ka
gham nahin hai mujhe zindagi ka
kya bigaadega mera zamaana aa
main nahin darne waala kazaa se ae
main nahin darne waala kazaa se ae ae

There is a need to go through the script of the song and make some corrections.

Please point out the errors with suggested correction in the lyrics.

Song-Mere aage hai Shah e Madeena (Sim Sim Marjeena)(1958)
Song-Mere aaqa hai Shah e Madeena (Sim Sim Marjeena)(1958)

“Dekhta” must be there instead of dekha ( hoon unhen har jagah se) and clearly it is not “shame” imaan.
I understand they are simple typographic errors, but in a blemish-less blog like this I feel ….
