Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 26
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

In 1963, when Sunil Dutt lip-synced the songs in the film ‘Gumrah’, that was the time when the name of a till-then-relatively-unknown singer became a household name.  And yes, it also earned him the first of his three Filmfare awards for the best male singer.  The song – “Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se Ajnabi Ban Jaayen Hum Dono”.  The singer – Mahendra Kapoor.

Remembering Mahendra ji on the anniversary of his passing away today – 27th September.

The set of songs in the film ‘Gumrah’ was a dream selection many singers aspire for.  Besides the one mentioned above, the other songs are equally impressive – “Ye Hawaa Ye Hawaa Ye Hawaa. . .”, “Aap Aaye To Khayaal e Dil e Nashaad Aaya”, and the duet with Asha Bhosle – “In Hawaaon Mein, In Fizaaon Mein”.  Before these songs brought the popularity to this upcoming singer, people were aware that he has sung for C Ramchandra in the film ‘Navrang’, back in 1959, the song “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi”.  And that he had also made his presence felt with the song “Chaand Chhupa Aur Taare Doobe, Raat Ghazab Ki Aayi”, under the baton of Naushad Sb, for the film ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ (1958).  And then the story about the music competition wherein the winner was to be given a break for a song in films, by the music directors who were the judges.  And the judges were – Naushad, C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan.  The break that Madan Mohan gave this singer was in the 1958 film ‘Jailor’ – “Bas Ik Sazaa Hi To Hai Zindagi”.

Other assignments followed in quick succession – most notable being “Tere Pyaar Ka Aasra Chaahta Hoon” in the 1959 film ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ under the direction of N Dutta. But what most people are not aware of is that the assignments coming from the above mentioned music competition were definitely not the debut breaks for Mahendra ji.  I got to see an interview online, and then went into the Geet Kosh to confirm.  I too am surprised to find out this new information about Mahendra ji.

In reality, he got his debut break under the music direction of V Balsara in the 1953 film ‘Madmast’.  In this film, he had recorded a duet with Dhan Indorewala  – “Kisi Ke Zulm Ki Tasveer Hai Mazdoor Ki Basti” and a qawwaali with SD Batish – “Unhen Dekhen To Weh Munh Pher Lete Hain”.  Next came his first solo song, under the music direction of Snehal Bhatkar.  The year – 1956; the film – ‘Diwaali Ki Raat’; the song – “Tere Dar Ki Bhikmangi Hai Daata Duniya Saari”.  Then in 1956 again, he recorded a duet with Sabita Bannerji for the film ‘Lalkaar’ under the music direction of Sanmukh Babu Upadhyay. The song – “O Bedardi Jaane Ke Na Kar Bahaane”.  The music competition and the associated assignments with major league music directors came later.

The song that I am presenting today is another wonderful memory from the radio listening days.  Heard a few times in childhood, this song simply disappeared for a very long time.  When the memory cells clicked on this again recently, I tried to search out more about this song.  Turns out this song is from a now completely forgotten movie – ‘Husn Ka Ghulam’ (1966).  When I mentioned this to Bakshi ji in a conversation earlier yesterday, he said no wonder this song has been lost, who would remember a film with such a name.  Ah but the song, that is special.  I would consider to include this in the set of best songs of Mahendra ji.

The words are written by Anjaan.  And the words themselves are so pretty. The music is by Robin Bannerjee.  And I have now stopped being surprised at the wonderful melodies this gentleman has created.  All his films have been obscure B/C grade films.  But the songs of these films – that is a different story altogether.  As is this song – a wonderful surprise of fresh air, whiffing in from fifty years ago, and tickling the memory cells with such a pleasure.  The rendering by Mahendra ji is simply wonderful.  With the control exercised over the pitch, maintaining a characteristic softness throughout the song, this song turns out to be such nerve soothner. Really wonderful.

This song is rare to the extent that it is not available online; and I had to upload it today from my collection.  But it is worth the wait.  Listen and enjoy.

Song – Dekha Hai Jab Se Aapka Chehra Ye Chaand Sa (Husn Ka Ghulam) (1966) Singer – Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Robin Bannerjee

Lyrics

kuchh aur hamen yaad nahin aapke siwa
bas aap nazar aaye hum jahaan jidhar gaye

ye shokh sharbati aankhen
ye sangmarmari baahen
balkhaa ke chalo jab yun tum
raahen bhi bhar uthen aahen
ye shokh sharbati aankhen
ye sangmarmari baahen
balkhaa ke chalo jab yun tum
raahen bhi bhar uthen aahen
kuchh aur hamen yaad nahin aapke siwa
bas aap nazar aaye hum jahaan jidhar gaye

aanchalke gulaabi saaye
jab rubaru ho ye surat
phir kisko hosh reh jaaye
zulfon ki nasheeli khushboo
aanchal ke gulaabi saaye
jab rubaru ho ye surat
phir kisko hosh reh jaaye
sharma ke hanse aap to aalam behak gaya
mausam ke dil fareb nazaare nikhar gaye
kuchh aur hamen yaad nahin aapke siwa
bas aap nazar aaye hum jahaan jidhar gaye

I used to sing the song lot. It all came back to me: the lyrics, the music the works.
kuchh aur hamen yaad nahin aapke siwa
bas aap nazar aaye hum jahaan jidhar gaye
