Roshan (full name Roshanlal Nagrath) had a career spanning just under two decades. During his career as a music director, he composed music is 55 Hindi movies. His debut movie was “Neki Aur Badi”(1949) and his last movie was “Anokhi Raat”(1968) which was released a few months after his death in 1967.

I have gone through the full list of movies and their songs composed by Roshan. Based on my research, I find that he may have composed just over 421 songs in these 55 movies. I say just over 421 songs because the exact number of songs composed by him in the movie “Commercial Pilot Officer”(1963) are not known. HFGK mentions six songs and then leaves gaps indicating that there were more songs in it. “Firdaus”(1953), “Gunaah”(1953) and “Mehbooba”(1954) were three movies where he composed just a few songs while some other music director composed other songs in these movies.

Some online sources come up with figures of 57 movies for Roshan. On going through such lists, I find that such lists include some titles of 1970s which were actually composed by another music director called Roshanlal Khatri who was different from Roshan and who was active after Roshan had passed away. One source even mentions a film called “Baghdaad”(1961) as a Roshan composition which is incorrect. Then one site mentions a movie called “Raja Beta” (supposedly made sometime in 1950s) with Roshan’s compositions in it. I have not been able to find mention of any such movie in HFGK. So, after filtering out all the incorrect attributions, I have come to the conclusion that Roshan composed music in 55 Hindi movies.

This blog has so far covered 284 songs from 54 of these movies. The one Roshan movie that has yet to make its appearance in the blog is “Coffee House”(1957).

“Coffee House”(1957) was produced and directed by Hari Walia for Niti Arts Productions, Bombay. This movie, whose prints have been lost (as per latest information) had Geeta Bali, Shammi Kapoor, Vijaylaxmii, Jeevan, Bhagwan, Chanchal, kumud Tripathi, Pal Sharma, Raja Kapoor, Helen etc in it.

I have heard a few songs from this movie and they all sound like gems. Here is the first song from “Coffee House”(1957) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan, as mentioned earlier.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this movie as well as on the story of this movie itself.

I have not been able to get a few words right to my satisfaction in the song. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics as applicable.

Song-Yoon dekhte ho jaise hamen jaante nahin (Coffee House)(1957) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

yoon dekhte ho jaise hamen jaante nahin
pehchaan kar bhi tum hamen pehchaante nahin
yoon dekhte ho jaise hamen jaante nahin

sabse hans kar milti hain
ye zaalim shokh nigaahen
ek humse hi takraa ke
na jaane kyun jhuk jaayen
sabse hans kar milti hain
ye zaalim shokh nigaahen
ek humse hi takraa ke
na jaane kyun jhuk jaayen
karlo idhar zara ek nazar
ham gair to nahin
yoon dekhte ho jaise hamen jaante nahin
pehchaan kar bhi tum hamen pehchaante nahin

ae ji khoon kiya hai tumne
ae ji khoon kiya hai tumne
kitne hi armaanon ka
par vaar bura hai dekho
hum jaise mastaanon ka
ae ji khoon kiya hai tumne
kitne hi armaanon ka
par vaar bura hai dekho
hum jaise mastaanon ka
meri ghaat pe mere haath pe
koi jaaye na kahin
yoon dekhte ho jaise hamen jaante nahin
pehchaan kar bhi tum hamen pehchaante nahin
yoon dekhte ho jaise hamen jaante nahin

Atul Ji,
After repeatedly listening to the song, I think the lyrics appear to me are
Aji khoon kiya hai tumne
Kitne Hi armaano ka
Par vaar bura hai dekho
Hum jaise mastano ka
To my ears and mind, this appears to be logical as well.
Happy hearing once again,
Regards,
