“Kundan”(1955) was produced and directed by Sohrab Modi for Minerva Movietone, Bombay. The movie had Sohrab Modi, Nimmi, Ulhas, Sunil Dutt, Pran, Om Prakash, Baby Naaz, Manorama, Roopmala, Murad, Jeevan, Sadat Ali, Kumkum etc in it.
The movie was based on Victor Hugo’s novel “Les Miserables” which was adapted for this Hindi movie by Pt Sudarshan.
We are sure that the celebrated French novel did not have songs, but its Hindi movie adaptation had as many as ten songs in it. 🙂 Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is the sixth song from the movie. This song is sung by Lata and Rafi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.
The picturisation of this song shows a happy looking couple riding a car, with the cheerful lady driving the car. She ends up causing the car to go off the road (which does not surprise me :).her abandon the car and climb up on a tonga, with the gentleman too forced to accompany her. Subsequently, the two of them abandon the tonga and decide to go on a boat ride. Quite a multi modal journey it turns out to be for them.
When I tried to identify the happy looking couple, I was in for quite a shock. The gentleman was a young Sunil Dutt, but recognising the lady gave me quite a shock ! It was Nimmy, who was playing a joyous role, perhaps for the only time in her career, and that made her almost unregnisable for most movie watchers like me. 🙂
Seeing that this movie was based on a French novel, and it was a Sohrab Modi movie, I am sure that Nimmi’s happiness may not have been too long lasting, though. 🙂

Song-Ye bahaaron ke din ye suhaana samaa (Kundan)(1955) Singer-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ghulam Mohammad
Lyrics
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
ye bahaaron ke din
ye suhaana sama
ye suhaana sama
ab to sun leejiye pyaar ki daastaan
ab to sun leejiye pyaar ki daastaan
ye baharon ke din ho o o
aa ha ha
o o o
aaj gaate chalo
muskuraate chalo
mastiyaan zindagi ki lutaate chalo o o o
ab nahi koi gam
apni manzil pe ham
aa gaye hain sanam
do musaafir miley
ban gaya kaarvaan
ban gaya kaarvaan
ab to sun leejiye pyaar ki daastaan
ab to sun leejiye pyaar ki daastaan
ye bahaaron ke din
ho ho ho
ha ha ha ha
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aaa
aa aa aa
ho o o
tum hamaare huye
ham tumhaare huye
mil gaye do mohabbat ke maare huye ae ae ae
tere dam se sanam
hai ye dil ka chaman
pyaar ki anjuman
zindagi hai haseen
aarzu hai jawan aarzu hai jawan
ab to sun lijiye pyaar ki dastaan
ye baharon ke din ho ho ho
aa ha ha
ye bahaaron ke din ye suhaana sama
ye suhaana sama
ab to sun leejiye pyaar ki daastaan
ab to sun leejiye pyar ki daastaan
ye bahaaron ke din ho o o
aa ha ha aa
o o o

Atul ji,
I agree with the last sentence of the second last para reg Nimmi.
Due credit to Ghulam Mohammed for such a great composition.
Pity he did not venture much on his own, though he was very highly capable.

It is remembered for the forceful dialogue deliveries of Sohrab Modi as usual. Interesting movie.
