“Aaj Kal”(1934) was directed by R S Chaudhary for Golden Mohar Sound Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Jal Merchant, Shanta Kumari, Ghulam Mohammad, Mohammad Hadi, Armelene (Sudha Bala), Baba Vyas, Afzal Bai etc in it.

This movie had 14 songs in it according to HFGK. Details (including record number) of only one song is available. That one song has already been discussed in the song. HFGK comments that the reverse side of the record of that song has the song “Mehul gaaje Maadhav naache”. HFGK is silent about the fact whether this other song belongs to “Aaj Kal”(1934). The uploader of this song on YT thinks so and has mentioned this song as belonging to this movie.

Seeing that this song has the same singer as the other song already discussed, it can be assumed that this song too is from “Aaj Kal”(1934). Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopeadia feels that this song could well be from this movie itself. Having done the hard work of noting down the lyrics of this song, I too am inclined to feel the same way. 🙂

Here is this song from “Aaj Kal”(1934). This song is sung by Shanta Kumari. Seeing that she figured in the star cast, it follows that this song was picturised on her as well. Lyricist of the song is not known. Music is composed by S P Rane.

The lyrics of this song are rather different and challenging to note down. There may be errors in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help suggest corrections wherever applicable.

I was about to say that the lyIics have some Gujarati words. However, it needs to be checked whether the entire lyrics have been taken from song penned by Sant Kavi Narsinh Mehta or the unnamed lyricist has changed some verses.

The link to the original lyrics written by Sant Kavi Narsinh Mehta is given below. It is in Gujarati.

So it is clear that the unknown lyricist has used only first two lines of the original song.

Atulbhai,
I was late in reporting that this is a very famous geet by Narsinh Mehta and many singers have sung it. The current song under discussion just repeats the antara three times with minimum change of words.

Atul ji,

S P Rane, the MD of this film was from Gujarat. He was the MD for the FIRST Gujarati Talkie film “Narsimh Mehta”- 1932. No wonder, then, that he should use this song in his Hindi film. Probably this Bhajan was a part of the Gujarati movie. It was made by Sagar movietone. S P Rane also did ‘Maya Bazar’-32 and ‘Meerabai’-32 for Sagar MT. he was active till 1939 only.

Atul ji

I posed this query to Gidharilal ji Vishwakarma of Jodhpur. Based on the information on the gramophone record, he has informed that this is a non film song.
