2011 was the year when Dharam Devdutt Pishorimal Anand bid Adieu to this world. God it is four years since then. Seems like yesterday when I saw the news in the early hours of that Saturday and I had passed on the news to my Daddy dearest. He was 88 when he passed away. And by then he had acted in over 110 films and produced approximately 30 films. That is such a large number.

Like I have said once before; his was a very stylish and charming persona. Whether the way he wore his hats and mufflers/ scarves; his swagger of a walk or the slight one sided grin. Enough to drive any lady weak in the knees. And the ladies he has charmed reads like the roll- call sheet of the Hindi Film Industry —beginning with Kamala Kotnis in “Hum Ek Hain” in 1946 to Tina Munim in “Man Pasand” and “Lootmaar” in 1980. Post that he did movies where he was not romantically paired opposite the heroines of his films.

He can be credited with introducing a number of actors to the industry-the earliest that I can remember is Kalpana Kartik who went on to become Mrs. Dev Anand after acting in a few films with him. He was instrumental in putting the careers of Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, Zarina Wahab, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, Tina Munim, Kabir Bedi, Shakti Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, etc on the fast track. He has touched the lives of later stars Amir and Salman Khan and Tabu and Aditya Pancholi too though the movies were not great commercially or story-wise.

He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2002 and Padma Bhushan in 2001. Some interesting facts which I found on the internet is that
(1) he has acted in only two 2- hero film viz: Insaniyat in 1955 with Dilip Kumar and Return of Jewel Thief in 1996 with Dharamendra
(2) of his 114 films in 6 decades “Kahin Aur Chal” was the only delayed release—released in 1968
(3) a multi starrer Ek DO Teen Char (1980) remained unreleased
(4) the 1968 Shrimanji had him in a guest appearance
(5) He was second to Rajesh Khanna in playing solo hero—Rajesh Khanna had 106 films to Dev Anand’s 104 films as solo hero.
(6) He starred in an English movie in 1970 with Zeenat Aman and a Korean actress. (recently Guruji had shared its poster with us on our Whatsapp Group; Thank You Guruji)

On the occasion of his death anniversary let us have a nice and lively song penned by Neeraj from his 1973 Chhupa Rustam. This was produced and directed by Vijay Anand. It starred Hema Malini, Premnath, Bindu, Ajit and Prem Chopra with Dev Anand. The music director of the movie was S. D. Burman. This song which is “inspired by” a line in the “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” song “Paanch Rupaiya Baara Ana” was number 9 in that years’ Binaca Geetmala Annual List.

Note from Atul: This song (as well as that line in “paanch rupaiyya baarah aana”) is a take on S D Burman’s own NFS Dheere se jaana bagiyan mein re bhanwra which is already covered in the blog.

Song-Dheere se jaana khatiyan mein (Chhupa Rustam)(1973) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

Hmmmm
hmm hm hmm
hey haan

dheere se jaana
dheere se jaana
khatiyan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein aen
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein aen
soyi hai raajkumaari ee ee
soyi hai
soyi hai raajkumaari ee ee
dekh rahi meethhe sapne ae
jaa jaa chhup ja
jaa jaa chhup ja
takiyan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein aen

veeran thi apni zindagi
aur soona tha apna makaan
haaye
haaye re kismat

miley mushkil se yeh mehmaan
ho bhi jaate shaayad meharbaan
miley mushkil se yeh mehmaan
ho bhi jaate shaayad meharbaan
aag laga di hai sukhan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein aen
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein

komal hai inka badan an
kaante si teri chubhan
komal komal hai inka badan an
kaante si teri chubhan
baadha daale nindiyan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein
ae ae
kidhar jaata hai
khabar
khabardar
haan chhup chhup ke

kyon chhup chhup ke pyaar kare tu
bada chhupa hua rustam hai tu
kyon chhup chhup ke pyaar kare tu
bada chhupa hua rustam hai tu
le le hamko bhi sharan mein aen
le le hamko bhi sharan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein aen
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein
o khatmal
dheere se jaana khatiyan mein aen
dheere se jaana
dheere se jaana
dheere se jaana bagiyan mein re bhanwra
dheere se jaana bagiyan mein

Dev Anand also acted in the 1954 Film “BAADBAAN” with Ashok Kumar ( Meena Kumari was the Heroine ) . You may recall this Film was made to revive a failing BOMBAY TALKIES STUDIO and all the lead Actors , including Usha Kiran had acted for free . Unfortunately the serious movie did not excite the Box Office and Bombay Talkies folded up for good . Usha Kiran won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress . Some lovely songs composed by TIMIR BARAN .

Lovely piece… One more film comes to my mind- Tamasha made in 1952 starring Dev Anand and Meena Kumari .The cast also included Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar. No song is surprisingly picturised on Dev Anand in this film…
