Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 3

‘इ’
“इधर भी हसीना, उधर भी हसीना “

There is one name, and one person, in the immediate family of the child Mohammed Rafi, that probably gets mentioned in the margin lines of the story of his early years. However, this person was instrumental, and played a most significant role in recognizing the talent of this child, and endeavored to provide him opportunities for listening to and learning from some of the greatest masters of that time. The name is Hamid and he was the elder brother to Mohammed Rafi.

In the village of Kotla Sultan Singh (close to Amritsar in Punjab), Hamid Bhai managed the small family shop. The child Mohammed, would frequent the shop, and would regale friends and customers with his untrained singing. The elder recognized the interest, and the potential talent in his younger brother. He would take him to the annual fair in Jalandhar every year. Called the ‘Harvallabh Mela’, this fair was an annual event in north India, where the great masters of instrumental and vocal music would converge, as part of a program of public recitals. Through these visits, Hamid Bhai came in touch with Feroze Nizami, who at that time was associated with the Delhi station of All India Radio, as a musician. The earliest tutoring and guidance in music for the child Mohammed, happened at the feet of Feroze Nizami.

In the same sequence, one adds the names of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Pt Jeevan Lal Mattoo, as the teachers from whom the young Mohammed further learnt the intricacies of classical music, and improved his skills as a vocal artist. And mind you, all this is happening as the young child is growing in his years, from 6 to 14. The foundations of the art of this future ‘Suron Ka Baadshah’ were laid in these years. And we have Hamid Bhai, his elder brother, to thank for this preparation and ground work.

The year was 1938. Young Mohammed was just 14 years old when, on the recommendation of Feroze Nizami, he joined the Lahore station of All India Radio as a regular singer. Getting to sing for the films was not in his plans. He had never thought in that direction. But destiny had other designs in store. The connection with Feroze Nizami opened up more avenues than just a singing position at the Lahore radio station. More about that progression, in the next installment.

For the alphabet ‘इ’ today, I present this lively number from the 1962 film ‘Girl’s Hostel’. The film is produced under the banner of RR Films, Bombay and is directed by Ravindra Dave. The six listed songs of this film are attributed to three songwriters – SH Behari, Asad Bhopali and Gulshan Bawra. However, the specific lyricist for this particular song is not identified. Music direction is by Ravi. The star cast includes Ajit, Nalini Jaiwant, Johnny Walker, Chaand Barq, Cuckoo, Shamlal, Nagpal, Nasreen, Tina, Teresa, Kanchan, Radhabai, besides others.

The film is not yet available in public domain so it is not possible to comment on the picturization of this song. However, another friend has informed that this song was performed on screen by Johnny Walker, based on his recollection from having seen this film long back. Given the tone and the rendition, I am inclined to agree that this is a Johnny Walker song.

Listen and enjoy.

Song – Idhar Bhi Haseena Udhar Bhi Haseena (Girls’ Hostel) (1962) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – Ravi

Lyrics

haaye
idhar bhi haseena
udhar bhi haseena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena
udhar bhi haseena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena. . .

neele peele
aasmaani
aanchalon ki hawaa
bin piye hi
bekhudi hai
chhaa raha hai nasha
dekha jo inhen yaaro
to aa gaya paseena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena
udhar bhi haseena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena. . .

jis pe apni
zulf ka ye
daal den phanda
in ke chakkar
se kabhi na
nikle wo banda
sabhi hain ik jaisi
ye lili meena tina
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena
udhar bhi haseena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena. . .

dil ko ghar mein
rakh ke aana
in ki mehfil mein
varna yaaro
husn waale
aa basen dil mein
hua hai dil waalon
ka mushkil jeena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena
udhar bhi haseena
kisi ne dil loota
kisi ne dil chheena
idhar bhi haseena. . .

This tune has been used often by Ravi.

Sudhir ji,,

Hamid Bhai, which you mentioned was NOT Rafi’s elder brother. In fact he had absolutely no blood relations with Rafi at all. Hamid Bhai was a friend of Rafi’s elder brother Mohammed Deen.
Hamid bhai recognised the potential in him and took him everywhere to listen to various singers etc. He was so confident of Rafi’s talent that he convinced Rafi’s family and accompanied him to Bombay in 1944.
They stayed in Bhendi Bazar. Rafi was already married to his cousin Bashira, but he fell in love with a girl in Bhendi bazar. The girl’s parents had no problems, but her elder sister was yet to be married. Hamid bhai
came forward and married the elder sister just so that Rafi could get his loved one.
Hamid bhai would take Rafi from studio to studio in search of work and finally Naushad gave him a chance when a letter from his father was given to him as a recommendation.
Hamid bhai was a vegetarian and a teetotller. He was a devout Muslim too. He ensured that when Rafi got established, Rafi kept away from drinks and did Namaz regularly.
After Rafi was fully settled, Hamid bhai left him in the hands of his brother in law Zaheer. Rafi got him the distribution rights of “Ganga Jamna”for Hyderabad circuit and established his office there. He also gave treatment to hamid bhai’s first wife when she got T.B. and kept her in Deolali,a Hill station. Rafi saw to it that Hamid’s children got education and his daughters got married.
Later Hamid bhai settled in Canada with his elder son and died there only.
Most people, books and sites make this mistake of calling Hamid Bhai as Rafi’s elder brother, but it is NOT TRUE.
Naushad has, in many interviews, metioned about the contribution of Hamid bhai to Rafi’s success.
Surprisingly, Wikipedia gives correct information. You may check it.
I have taken this information from the book,”Gaaye chala jaa” by Shirish Kanekar.

Arun ji,

Thanks so much for the additional details, and the corrected information about Hamid Bhai and Rafi’s early years in Bombay. I had referred to Sh. Anil Bhargav’s book ‘Swaron Ki Yatra’ for this brief write up.

Regarding Rafi Sb’s coming to Bombay, it is indicated that he initially worked for some time at the Lahore station of AIR. Please confirm if this information is correct.

Thanks
Sudhir

Sudhir ji,

Rafi himself never mentioned about his work on Lahore AIR, nor I found any reference in other books. may be this too is unconfirmed and likely to be not true.
In many cases, Swaron ki Yatra is wrong. I have also suffered and stopped referring to it. Even he has printed wrong photos.

Quiz
Did Rafi sang with Saigal?

Yes,in film Shahjehan.

And the song is Mere Sapno ki Rani Ruhi Ruhi Ruhi.

– D Samant

Yes you are both great. Thanks

In a radio interview Naushad recalled that Rafi came to him with a recommendation later expressing his wish to sing with Saigal. He was composing the song ruhi ruhi..’chalo aap bhi gaa lo aakhri line. Aap bhi kya yaad karoge’.
