‘Doosron ki khushi me apni khushi dhoondh lo’- This is the message that ace director Hrishikesh Mukherji conveyed in many of his movies, be it ‘Anand’, ‘Bawarchi’ or even that mediocre ‘Sabse bada Sukh’. But, perhaps, the first one amongst his movies to propagate this message was that little film ‘MemDidi’.(1961).

Hrishikesh Mukherji, surprisingly, directed a remake of ‘Memdidi’ with the title ‘Acha Bura’(1983) , which was a pale shadow of the original.

The story has been covered by Arun Ji in a write up relating to another song from this movie. For the sake of comprehensiveness of this post, I am narrating it in my words.

The story is about a mohalla where poor people with good hearts lived. Two leading characters with tough exterior and soft heart were enacted by Jayant and David. They helped the helpless, but reigned in the exploitative ones. One day a new tenant, a Christian lady ( Lalita Pawar) comes to reside in the mohalla. Because of her western attire she is referred to as ‘Mem’. Jayant and David dislike the ‘intruder’ into the ‘Happy family’ because of an unpleasant encounter with her when she enters the mohalla. They plan tricks to humiliate her which backfire because of the good, helpful nature of the lady. She ultimately wins them over and she becomes ‘Mem-didi’.

They then find out about her foster daughter played by Tanuja. They note that Memdidi toils day and night to educate and bring up her foster daughter. It turns out that this girl ( Tanuja) has a love interest. The latter part of the movie deals with the schemes ofJayant and David to unite the lovers and arrange their marriage. The Mohalla thus finds joy in helping ‘Mem Didi’.

Today’s song is picturised in this movie by way of entry of the character of Tanuja in the narration. Her face gets revealed as the lather on the face while bathing is washed down. (I loved the introduction, when I watched it then, and it has stayed etched in my memory)

The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar, set to music by Salil Chowdhary. Lyrics by Shailendra.

Quintessential Salil Chowdhry piece.

Song-Raaton ko jab neend udd jaaye (Mem Didi)(1961) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Salil Chaudhary
Chorus

Lyrics

raaton ko jab neend udd jaaye
ghhadi ghhadi yaad koi aaye
kisi bhi soorat se behle naa dil
tab kya kiya jaaye
bolo kya kiya jaaye
raaton ko jab neend udd jaaye
ghhadi ghhadi yaad koi aaye
kisi bhi soorat se behle naa dil
tab kya kiya jaaye
bolo kya kiya jaaye
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura

(aa haa aa aa haa aa
aa haa aa aa haa aa aa
aa haa aa aa)
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga

chanda ko dekh aag laga jaaye
tanhaayi mein chaandni naa bhaaye
thhandi hawaaon mein kaanpe badan
tab kya kiya jaaye
bolo kya kiya jaaye
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura

(aa haa aa aa haa aa
aa haa aa aa haa aa aa
aa haa aa aa)
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga

hothhon pe ek naam aaye jaaye
aankhon mein ek chhab muskuraaye
darpan mein soorat paraayi dikhe
tab kya kiya jaaye
bolo kya kiya jaaye
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura

(aa haa aa aa haa aa
aa haa aa aa haa aa aa
aa haa aa aa)
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga

sakhiyon ke beech dil ghabraaye
dar ho kahin baat khul jaaye
lekin akele mein dhadke jiya
tab kya kiya jaaye
bolo kya kiya jaaye
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga
yeh toh pyaar ka rog hai rog bura

(aa haa aa aa haa aa
aa haa aa aa haa aa aa
aa haa aa aa)
jise ek dafa yeh laga toh laga

raaton ko jab neend udd jaaye
ghhadi ghhadi yaad koi aaye
kisi bhi soorat se behle naa dil
tab kya kiya jaaye
bolo kya kiya jaaye
