Missing Films of 1960s – 16
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Obscure films and obscure artists – this arena is a goldmine for discovering wonderful gems; gems that have been unheard, or forgotten and buried under the sands of time. I was not even aware of the film ‘Private Detective’ from 1962, till I saw it listed in the homework assignment given to me by Khyati Ben.
The film itself is unheard of. It also carries an alternate name – ‘CID Inspector’. I tried to search, but could locate no information about it, other than what is available in the Geet Kosh. The production banner is Cannes Films, Bombay. It is a mystery film directed by A Shamsheer. Cast of actors includes Naazi, Samar Roy, Heera Sawant, Shyam Kumar, Kammo Tripathi, Vijay, Choclate, Saroj, Sujeet, Kamla, Balram, Guru, Shaad, Mishrilal, Ahmed, Firoz, Mohammed Ali, Amin B Khan, Parwana, Anand, Master Kiran, Narendra Kumar, Nazir Kashmiri etc. Barring five or six names, the rest are all unknown to me.
Coming to the artists who made the music. The music director is S Kishan. In couple of places I could locate brief write ups about him, but these are simply a compilation of the list of films for which he has composed the music. No biographical information is available. His film career apparently starts in 1960 with films ‘Gentleman Daku’ and ‘Laalach’, traverses through films like ‘Aflatoon’ (1961), ‘Private Detective’ (1962), ‘Arab Ka Lal’ (1964), ‘Khooni Khazaana’ (1965), and we hear no more about him after the 1968 film ‘Taatar Ki Haseena’. His name also appears in some unreleased films of this period, and that’s about it. Two of his songs are already showcased here. A fabulous Mubarak Begum solo – “Ae Dil Ye Bataa Hum Kahaan Aa Gaye”, from ‘Khooni Khazaana’ (1965); and “Ghalat Hai Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne”, from ‘Aflatoon’ (1961).
The names of the singers in this song are Khursheed Bawra and Sabita Bannerji. Once again, as I searched, the only sets of information I could locate are the list of films for which they have sung. We will readily recognize Khursheed Bawra – he is present on the dias in the iconic qawwali “Na To Kaarvaan Ki Talaash Hai” (‘Barsaat Ki Raat’, 1960). His singing career in films spans a time period of about two decades from early 1950s to late 1960s. His accompanying singer, Sabita Bannerji, is also somewhat of a familiar name, that is recognizable through some famous songs like “Jaane Waale Sipaahi Se Poochho” from the 1960 film ‘Us Ne Kahaa Tha’; and “Chaand Kabhi Tha Baahon Mein” from the 1961 film ‘Sapan Suhaane’. Her film career spans a time period from mid 1950s to late 1960s, having sung about 50 songs in in 37 films.
[NOTE: Arun ji, our dear in house encyclopedia, has added the following important information about Sabita Bannerji. She is the same person who is known by the name Sabita Chaudhri, after her marriage to the renowned music director, the late Salil Chaudhri. Following is a brief bio sketch for her.]
Sabita Banerjee was born in Lahore on 18-7-1938, and she grew up in Delhi, after her family migrated. Her father was Dy. General Manager of Reserve Bank of India. Her mother encouraged her to learn singing. Soon she became a talented singer. She won “Miss Golden Voice” award in a Bombay contest in 1952. She also won the “Saigal Memorial Trophy’ in 1953 in another contest. Her performances caught the attention of film composers and offers to sing in films started coming her way. The very next year composer Nashaad gave her a break in his film “Darwaza” (1954).
Actor Ashim Kumar introduced her to composer Salil Chaudhari. She sang many songs for him. They soon fell in love and got married, and she became Sabita Chaudhari. She sang in about 37 Hindi films. However she has sung more in Bangla films. Some of her Hindi films are – ‘Honeymoon’ (1960), ‘Usne Kaha Tha’ (1960), ‘Sapan Suhane’ (1961), ‘Aankh Ka Nasha’ (1956), ‘Yahudi Ki Beti (also 1956), ‘Madhumati’ and ‘Suhaag’ (both 1958), ‘Kavi Kalidas’ (1959), ‘Masoom’ (1960), ‘Kabuliwala’ (1961), ‘Chor Darwaza’ (1965) etc. Currently she is living in Kolkata as a retired person.
And the lyricist – the only place where I can locate his name is the Geet Kosh. As per listings in the Geet Kosh, Hairat Sitapuri has penned about 20 songs in four films. Outside of this, there is no mention about this songwriter in any compilation or any other source that I could access.
Listening to the song, it would be difficult to digest that the names as unfamiliar as the ones listed above, have come together to create this song. An enamoring light melody that is a nok-jhonk between young lovers. The opening and the interlude music is attractive, as is the rest of the composition.
Listen and enjoy.

Here is what I wrote about S.Kishen,MD, in one of my articles some time back…
” Music Directed S. KISHEN was one such composer who had enough talent but not enough luck to shine in big banner films. As an independent composer his first film was ‘Gentleman Daku'(1960). Then came ‘Laalach’, ‘Aflatoon’ and ‘Private Detective’ in 1962. One song from this film, written by Hairat Seetapuri and sung by Savita Banerjee – “Meri Ghagari Mein Ghungroo Laga De To Phir Meri Chaal Dekhna”, was blatantly copied by Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad for the film ‘Sanghursh’ (1968), as “Mere Pairon Mein Ghungroo Bandha De To Phir Meri Chaal Dekh Le’. Both shakeel and Naushad were big guns. Their song became a hit and S KIshen and Hairat Seetapuri remained unrecognized ! ( I could not imagine that Naushad has done this, but the facts are there for everyone to see.)
The music of S Kishen was limited to stunt and action films like ‘Arab Ka Lal’, ‘Khooni Khazana’, ‘Taatar Ki Haseena’ etc. Three his 3 films viz. ‘Pariyon Ki Shahzadi’, ‘Badle Ki Aag’ and ‘Aakhri Muqabla’ as well as ‘Qawaalis of Ismail Azad’ remained unreleased or incomplete. All were films of 1960s.
‘Khooni Khazana’ (1965) was a East And West Movies film, directed by A. Shamsheer, with whom S Kishen worked in 4 films.”
Thanks so much for the additional details about singer Sabita Bannerji / Chaudhri and music director S Kishen. I have updated the above article with the information.
