Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 12
———————————————————

Readers of this Blog may recall Talat Mehmood’s iconic song aa teri tasweer banaa loon from ‘Naadaan’ (1951) which was composed by Chic Chocolate (Antonio X. Vaz). Recently, I came across the mp3 clip of a song with the same starting verse from an obscure film ‘Rekha’ (1943). There is no mention of the names of singers and lyricist of the song. I got some information from the internet about the film but drew a blank on the names of singers. I could not locate the song on YT.

REKHA (1943) was produced under the banner of Ramnik Productions and was directed by Mahendra Thakore. The star cast included Leela Chitnis, Harish, Maya Banerjee, Sankata Prasad, Moni Chatterjee, Padma Banerjee etc. As per http://www.myswar.com, there were 9 songs in the film penned by 4 lyricists – Qamar Jalalabadi, Nazim Panipati, Swami Ramanand Saraswati, and M S Sherai. But distributions of lyricists among 9 songs are not indicated.

As per Geet Kosh, the songs of this film are written by JC Solanki. The songs were composed by Damodar Sharma.

After listening to a couple of songs sung by Leela Chitnis in the film ‘Bandhan’ (1940) and a song saawan aaye ya na aaye from ‘Saadhna’ (1939), sung by Harish, I have come to the conclusion that the song under discussion may have been sung by Harish and Leela Chitnis. But this needs confirmation.

Enjoy listening to this cute love song.

Lyrics

aa teri tasweer banaa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon

palkon ke pardon mein chhipa loon
chhipa loon
palkon ke pardon mein chhipa loon
chhipa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon

jab chaaun main jee bhar dekhoon
hans loon gaa loon dil bahla loon
jab chaaun main jee bhar dekloon
hans loon gaa loon dil bahla hoon

apne sab rang tujh mein bhar doon
tujhko apna saa hi kar loon
apne sab rang tujh mein bhar doon
tujhko apna saa hi kar loon
main tujh mein jaa kar chhup jaaun
main tujh mein jaa kar chhup jaaun
apni hi tasweer banaa loon
apni hi tasweer banaa loon

aa teri tasweer banaa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon

saagar kaa neelapan laaun
ban ki main hariyaali
chamak churaaun taaron ki
main nav subah ki laali

tujhko rango beech chhipa loon
tujhko rango beech chhupa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon
aa teri tasweer banaa loon

Dear Atul ji, Sadanand ji,

I have been in back and forth communication with Harmandir ji since morning today. I have also been trying to locate more songs of this film, from my other collector friends.

As far as songs, I have two songs of this film, and so far, no one else has claimed to have more songs of this film. These two songs are nos. 4 and 9 in the Geet Kosh list, for whom the one solo gramophone record has been located in public domain so far.

As per Harmandir ji, the information that GC Solanki is the song writer comes from the booklet which identifies him as the story writer, dialogue writer and songwriter for the film ‘Rekha’. This information is in the Geet Kosh already. Any additional source of information can only be actual gramophone records which may carry additional information. In the absence of any additional records, there is no other available authentic source of information that may identify the four names as lyricists, as listed on myswar.com.

And guess where myswar.com has got the name of four lyricists they have listed.
These four lyricists are listed for the film ‘Sahaara’ (1943) in Geet Kosh. The film ‘Sahaara’ appears just below ‘Rekha’ on page 128 of volume 2. This very clearly shows that myswar.com is copying data from Geet Kosh directly, and mindlessly. It is clear that while copying, someone made an error, and picked up the four names of lyricists from film ‘Sahaara’ and pasted it under the film ‘Rekha’ (ज़ाहिर है, नकल में अकल नहीं लगाई ).

That is the source of their data. The name of lyricist is GC Solanki.

This is not the first time that I see such absurd errors on myswar.com. We must be careful with finding and using such detailed data elsewhere on the net. Everyone is mindlessly copying from Geet Kosh. They make such absurd errors. And they will propagate any errors that we know exist in Geet Kosh.

Sudhir ji,
Thank you very much for your efforts in finding out the lyricist of the song as also filling the missing words in the lyrics.

I am aware the limitations of websites like http://www.myswar.com. Normally, I would have checked with Bharatbhai the entries in HFGK. But this write-up was written in ungodly hours of India as I am presently in the US. At least, I could be have checked www,earthmusic.com where the name of the lyricist has been correctly shown as J C Solanki.

Atul ji, Sudhir ji

When I read the title of the song, obviously I armed myself with the comment……How come this song was not yet posted……
On reading the post by Sadanand ji, it became clear that it was not the Talat saab number.

We have had 2-3 such songs with similar first lines in the very recent past and there are several others.

I think it will be great if we bundle them in a separate folder named …..Similar first line songs etc…….
