Missing Films of 1960s – 18
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

In presenting this series, we are dealing with a very familiar era, when the radio was a prevalent medium and a big support to bring film songs to the listening public. More songs were heard, more songs got stored in the collective memory, and yes, compared to the earlier decades, a much larger percentage of films had their music released on gramophone records, and hence a much larger number of film songs are available. And yet, there are still a few films for which any audio or video material has not surfaced in the public domain. I will provide some statistics for 1961 and 1962, when I close the decade of 1962, three or four episodes hence.

The film that I present today in this series is ‘Rashtraveer Shivaji’ from 1962.  Ten years prior to this film, in 1952, another film was released with the title ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji’. When I started looking for this film and its music, initially I got these two mixed up. I started to search for songs of ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji’. To make the matters a little more complicated, there is another film with the name ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji’ released in 1961 by the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI). The 1961 film from CFSI is not yet traceable in public domain. From the sound of it, initially it seemed that the 1962 film, i.e. ‘Rashtraveer Shivaji’ or its songs are also not available, and I parked this in the list of unavailable films. However, the time lines were soon sorted out, and I discovered that this film is very much available. The songs of this film are all available as video clips on the internet.

Today, I present the first song of this film on our blog.  The song is presented in the traditional Laavani folk dance form, from Maharashtra. As per the Geet Kosh, the lyrics are penned by Anjaan and the music is composed by the duo of Suresh-Talwar.  The singer for this particular song is not identified in the Geet Kosh, and I request other friends and readers to please help identify the lead singer’s voice in this song.

The film is produced under the banner of Firdaus Films, Bombay and is directed by Talwar. The main cast of actors includes Shaam Kumar, Ratnamala, Anjum, Rajrani, Heera Sawant, Bela Bose, Sujata Kumari, Narbada Shankar,SK Shyam. Radhey Shyam, and a very long list of more names.

The song apparently is an expression of happiness and congratulations, on the occasion of a new king ascending the throne. It is possible that in the film, this song is marks the occasion of Shiva ji’s coronation.  Listen and enjoy.

Song – Din Baar Baar Ye Aaye, Ke Mangal Chhaye (Rashtraveer Shivaji) (1962) Singer – Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Suresh Talwar

Lyrics

din baar baar ye aaye
ye mangal chhaaye
ke gaao badhaai

din baar baar ye aaye
ye mangal chhaaye
ke gaao badhaai
raaj mahal ka ban ke ujaala
nai jyot muskaai
raaj mahal ka ban ke ujaala
nai jyot muskaai
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee ro
ji ji re jee ro
ji ji re jee ro jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee

jug jug jiye hamaara laadla
jauhar naye dikhaaye
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
jug jug jiye hamaara laadla
jauhar naye dikhaaye
jidhar jhoom ke bad-ha-bad-haaye
ye duniya jhuk jaaye
rakhe hind ka paani
karey qurbaani
desh ki laaj bachaaye
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee
ji ji re jee

———————————————————
