Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 15

‘छ’
“छोड़िए गुस्सा हुज़ूर ऐसी नाराज़ी भी क्या”

वो बादशाह सुरों का (He, the monarch of musical notes)

This phrase is used as the intro caption by one of the fans who uploads many songs of Rafi Sb on YouTube. (His name is Ahsaan Qasim.  He is a dear friend, and part of the wide circle of collector friends).

I have discussed in one of my earlier posts, about Rafi Sb’s cognizance of the emotional intent of a song, and his ability to capture and express its exact flavor and nuance, when he would sing it. This ability made his playback voice so intensely an integral subsumed part of the on screen performance, that his voice seemed to dissolve into the persona on screen, losing its own identity. And Rafi Sb had no favorites in this regard. His voice became the voice of any and every actor who lip synced his songs on screen. No other singer in this domain has been able to emulate This remarkable and pervasive characteristic of Rafi Sb’s singing. Other singers either have a very unique characteristic of their singing voice that is identifiable in every song they have given their voice to, or the identity of their voice matches the identity of some select actors and on screen roles. As I said, the pervasiveness of this ability of Rafi Sb continues to be unmatched.

In an article that I read a while back (and I am not able to now immediately recall that source), the author had expressed this very thought in a very special way, which stuck to my mind. The idea presented is that Rafi Sb is the only playback singer who could act through his voice. The author termed Mohammed Rafi as the pioneer of this concept. After a handful of initial cameos on screen early on in his career, he gave up is on screen aspirations, focused only on playback singing, and was able to “project” his “acting” abilities through his voice. I wonder if he was able to actually able to visualize the scenario in which the song would be captured on camera. Surely, the primary planner always is the music director. Rafi Sb was able to implement that plan successfully, projecting that required “movement” into the song, which would later then be utilized by the director to picturize the song. This scenario becomes very visible and apparent, when we view the picturization of songs of Shammi Kapoor and Johnny Walker. But this characteristic is not limited to the songs of this these two actors only. Pick up any song by Rafi Sb, and the visual presentation of that tells about his ability to “act” through his voice.

Today’s song is from the 1958 film ‘Detective’. Lyrics are by Shailendra, and the music composition is by Mukul Roy. The cast of actors is led by Pradeep Kumar and Mala Sinha, and includes Johnny Walker, Daisy Irani, KN Singh, Dhumal, Krishnakant, Moni Chatterji, Bhagwan Sinha, Keshav Rana, Shetty, Ratan Gurung, Sailen Bose etc. Couple of interesting comments about the star cast. It appears that Krishnakant had a double role in this film. And secondly, it seems that some magic show is part of the storyline, since the list of actors includes the name of AC Sorcar, the magician who used to perform on stage. The film is produced under the banner of Amiya Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Shakti Samant.  As the name suggests, this is a cops-and-ribbers story. The film has 8 songs, as per HFGK listing.

Song – Chhodiye Gussa Huzoor Aisi Naaraazi Bhi Kya (Detective) (1958) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Shailendra, MD – Mukul Roy

Lyrics

chhodiye gussa huzoor
aisi naraazi bhi kya
hum ne to jo kuchh kiya
dil ke kehne par kiya
aap ki marzi hai ab
jo chaahe dijiye sazaa
chhodiye gussa huzoor
aisi naraazi bhi kya

seene ke paar kar do
tirchhi nazar ka teer
hum chup hain lo
pehna bhi do
zulfon ki ye zanjeer
seene ke paar kar do
tirchhi nazar ka teer
hum chup hain lo
pehna bhi do
zulfon ki ye zanjeer
yoon bhi ghaayal kar gayi
aap ki har ek adaa
chhodiye gussa huzoor
aisi naraazi bhi kya

gaalon pe ye laali
badla hua tevar
kya khoob ye tasveer hai
tumko nahin khabar
gaalon pe ye laali
badla hua tevar
kya khoob ye tasveer hai
tumko nahin khabar
ab udhar munh pher ke
muskuraa dijey zaraa
chhodiye gussa huzoor
aisi naraazi bhi kya

is bezabaan dil ko
rakh lijiye ghulaam
hum thhe sahi
ab aap bhi
ho jaayenge badnaam
is bezabaan dil ko
rakh lijiye ghulaam
hum thhe sahi
ab aap bhi
ho jaayenge badnaam
bas mein kar ke dekhiye
ab ye dil hai aap ka
chhodiye gussa huzoor
aisi naraazi bhi kya
hum ne to jo kuchh kiya
dil ke kehne par kiya
aap ki marzi hai ab
jo chaahe dijiye sazaa
chhodiye gussa huzoor
aisi naraazi bhi kya

———————————–——————-

I would disagree that Rafi Saab was the only one who could project the actor through the song – this is not to project Kishore da being better than Rafi Saab, but in this aspect, Kishore da was head and shoulders over any other singer. And that was also because he was an actor and all-rounder himself. Be it the songs he sang for others or songs he sang himself, the dard or joy or comedy could never be replicated by others.

I thought that this song was picturized on Johnny Walker!! There are shades of “Zimbo Zimbo What’s gonna do iyo” by Jim Reeves.

With due respect to Mr. Ranji Vaidyanathan, I beg to differ from his views.
The issue is not that Kishore da could convey successfully each emotion, be it sadness, joy, romanticism, devotion or pathos according to the situational theme of a particular song, but the moot point is that when a listener hears a song and closes the eyes, can s/he visualise just from the style of singing on which actor most probably that song was picturised.
No disrespect meant to other great stalwarts, but Mohd. Rafi was in this aspect leagues ahead of not only his contemporaries but any other singer before or after him. As is said in Sanskrit: ” Na bhooto na bhavishyati”.

I second your contention
