It is a very special occasion for the blog but this special occasion escaped everyone’s attention. The reason could be that my manual score keeping gave me a different figure compared to the automatic count given by the blog. When I accidentally looked at the count on the right hand side of the blog, I found out that Asha Bhonsle’s count of songs in the blog stood at the round figure of 2000 !

Asha Bhonsle thus becomes the third artist to touch 2000 songs mark. Only Lata and Rafi, the two redoubtable legends of HFM are ahead of her in the blog.

The figures show how much Asha Bhonsle, in the company of Lata and Rafi, has dominated in the field of HFM during its golden era.

While it is easy to conclude, with the benefit of hindsight oand ignorance, that Asha Bhonsle has it easy, that was hardly the case. She had to fight against heavy odds. Her elder sibling being a leading playback singer did not help her cause. Her personal life lay in ruins and yet she did allow that to distract her or lose focus from her career. She worked very hard to gain a foothold in the industry.

She would typically get songs that were rejected /leftover songs which Lata and other leading singers would refuse to sing. Asha Bhonsle grabbed the opportunities and those songs became enormously popular.

Asha Bhonsle was also the beneficiary of the fact that some music directors, who would not work with Lata for some reasons chose Asha Bhonsle as their main female playback singer of choice. We all know about O P Nayyar not working with Lata, but it is less known that there are other music directors too who have used Asha Bhonsle’s voice more often than Lata’s voice. Then there were some music directors who stopped working with Lata for some time and began to use Asha Bhonsle’s voice instead during that period.

Once she got a foothold, Asha Bhonsle kept on reinventing herself instead of remaining stuck in time warp. If she got her initial identity as O P Nayyar’s main playback singer in 1950s, they she transformed her under the baton of R D Burman, beginning with “Teesri Manzil”(1966). And when the Golden era of HFM came to an end, she reinvented her yet again, beginning with the songs of “Umrao Jaan”(1981). And more than one decade later, she got metamorphosed yet again, this time with “Rangeela” (1995).

Music lovers know a lot about Asha Bhonsle already, and there is no use repeating all those things here. Suffice it to say that she has had an amazing career as a playback singer. To imagine that a younger sibling to Lata Mangeshkar could not only emerge out of the redoubtable shadows of her formidable sister but could become a legend on her own is something that may have few parallels anywhere in the world. Now, when the dust has more or less settled on her career, we now know that she hold the world record for singing the MAXIMUM number of recorded songs in the WORLD. Counting all her records, she has had over eleven thousands recordings of all kinds.

It is not just about quantity alone, of course. Many of her songs have gone on to become timeless classics. And these songs cover the entire gamut of feelings that humans are capable of. She has sung timeless wedding songs, bidaai songs, mother-child songs, raakhi songs, cabarat songs, romantic songs, sentimental songs, melancholic songs, mujra songs….. You name the genre and I can name timeless classics songs of that genre that are sung by Asha Bhonsle.

Technically, Asha Bhonsle has already touched 2000 songs in the blog, but that does not prevent us from having a belated celebration for this big occasion. As it is, number n+1 is often considered an auspicious number (where n is a round number and a multiple of 100). So here is the auspicious 2001th song of Asha Bhonsle to celebrate this occasion. This song is a befitting song for the occasion.

On listening to this song, one wonders how such a cute song failed to become popular. As it is, this is the least known of the seven songs from “Mohar”(1959). This movie was directed by Jairaj for Black and white Movies, Bombay. The movie had Geeta Bali, Shammi Kapoor, Tiwari, Kuldeep Kaur, Randheer, Lalita Pawar, Bhagwan, Minu Mumtaz, Chaman Puri, Krish Dhawan, Kumud Tripathi, Tuntun, Krishnmoorthi, Sarita, Asha etc in it.

Six songs from this movie have already been discussed in the past. So this is the seventh and final song from the movie to appear in the blog.

This is the only song of Asha Bhonsle in this movie. Female playback voice in the other songs were given by Lata, which is not surprising, considering that Madan Mohan is the music director. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist.

We know that Madan Mohan used Lata as his female playback singer of choice for majority of his movie songs. But let us not forget the fact that the Madan Mohan song that reached the highest ranking in a Binaca geetmaala final as long as madan Mohan was alive was not a Lata song but an Asha Bhonsle song ! This song was the famous song Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar mein from “Mera Saaya”(1966) which stood fourth in Binaca geetmala final of 1966. and it is a song that has become even more beloved of me now that I am actually at Bareli. People have requested me to to visit the Bareli ka baazaar and post a photo but I am not sure which of the baazaars of Bareli is the culprit where the jhumka had gone missing. 🙂

This 2001th song of Asha Bhonsle is sadly at the other end of the spectrum as far as its popularity is concerned. This song is so rare that it was not even available on YT. So very few people may have heard this song. But what a rollicking song it is. It is a teasing song with roles reversed. Here the lady is teasing the gentleman. Too bad that the video of the song is not available and so we cannot tell how and on whom this song was picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

With this song, “Mohar”(1959) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. And as mentioned earlier, this song celebrates a momentous occasion for the blog, namely 2000 songs of Asha Bhonsle in the blog.

In spite of having sung the maximum(the ratio 11/7 compared to Lata) songs the blog has lesser number of songs of hers than Lata. The anomaly needs to be corrected by giving more exposure to her songs from now.

Talking of Bareilly we find often films immortalize places and people. Bareilly is proposing to install a huge 14 metre replica THE JHUMKA in the main city-centre of Delapir tri-junction as everybody visiting Barielly were asking kaha jhumka gira re(not unlike tourist searching for Baker Street{for Sherlock Holmes} and the scene of curvaceous Anita Ekberg playing with the devastatingly handsome Marcello Mastroianni in the waters of the Fountain in Rome).
In fact there is a competition organized for the best design of jhumka and price for the winner is some 10k or is it 100k?
So, Bareilly will soon have this wonderful replica in the tri-junction, which will be widened and beautified at a cost of Rs 6.50 crores.
Interestingly, a couple of years before Sadhana died in 2015, a garden outside her bungalow became a bone of contention between her and Asha. The house belonged to her and she wanted Sadhana to vacate it. Bhosle planned to demolish the building and erect probably a multi-storied complex. This led to a court battle over Sadhana’s 50-year tenancy.
Well, would Asha and Sadhana have even dreamt of such rancour when one sang “jhumka gira re” and the other danced to its beat and melody?

the prize money for the winner of ‘jhumka design competition’ is Rs.25k (as per a tv report 2/3 days back on ‘aaj tak’)

Thanks Avinash

Maximum number of recorded songs in the world is S.P.Balasubrahmanyam not Lata Mangeshkar

In the past (1970s), Guiness Books of World records accepted unsubstantiated claims of singers singing 20,000 plus and even 30000 plus songs. That is no longer the case. Guiness Books recognises Asha Bhonsle as the record holder. We will accept others also as record holders if they can be recognised that way by Guiness Books.

According to one site he has recorded over 38,000 plus songs in a span of 40 years, which include film songs and devotional numbers recorded by various recording companies of the country. It’s a world record which will be soon entering into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Even if we do back of the envelope calculation it means that he has sung 1000 per year which means everyday 3 songs which is unsustainable as there will sundays, holidays etc. Even Asha could sing 11k+ songs in a 60 year run and Lata sang some 7,000 songs in even longer run.
So till the the Guinness Book of World Records.do not authenticate the claim has to taken with tons of salt.

I feel that some fans of regional movies are still living in the era when fantastic claims like singing tens of thousands of songs were bandied about about many singers. someone needs to count the total number of songs that have been created in the years under question. Chances are, the number of songs created in the decades in these movies will not add up to the figure being claimed for a single artist.

Congrats for having 2000 songs of Ashaji in this blog. This is not a typical MM number.

Atul ji,

Nice write-up and many congrats for this feat on the blog.
