Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 1
———————————————-

30th March happens to be a 65th Anniversary of Radio Ceylon. In the year 1951, this oldest Hindi Commercial Service had its first External service program broadcasted on 30th March.

In order to congratulate Our dear Radio Ceylon (Now SLBC) on this day, I e-mailed the following to the present Radio announcer Jyoti Parmar, whom I knew since long and used to call sometimes, during morning hours.

After mailing that mail an afterthought came to my mind that why not we congratulate Radio Ceylon on our Blog too. May be other music lovers on our Blog would like to comment on it, even a day or two after the Anniversary date.

After getting the Suman Chaurasia’a Book ‘ Lata Samagra’, I was thinking of starting a new series of Lata’s songs so far NOT COVERED on our Blog. This is a very auspicious day to start that series, which introduced Lata-ji to me from those Radio days.

All songs of Lata-ji are covered from the 1945 Film ‘Badi Maa’. This is the second song of Lata from 1946 Film ‘Jeevan Yatra’ on this Blog.

Produced by Rajkamal Kala mandir, Bombay, and directed by Vinayak this Social film ‘Jeevan Yatra’ of 1946 had the star-cast that included Nayan Tara, Yakub, Baburao Pendhhrkar, Pratima Devi, LATA MANGESHKAR, Shantarin, Sunalini Devi, Mehar Sultana, Sundar Bai, Dixit, Chanrakant, Daamu Anna Mavlankar, Nimbalkar, Parshuram, Kamal, Janki Das, Vikas etc. Deevan Sharar wrote the lyrics for those ten songs, and the Music was by Vasant Desai. Other singers in the film were Manmohan Krishna, Zeenat Begum, Zohara Bai, and Kumar.

With this let me print some portion of the E-mail that I sent right on 30th March to Radio Ceylon (now SLBC) Announcer Jyoti Parmar

“Dear Jyoti-ji,
First, let me congratulate my dear radio program for completing 65 years of musical journey today, needless to say that it has given me and millions others immense pleasure daily through so many years. During 1951-52, I was doing my Sound Engineering at St Xavier College, Bombay and our recording studio was regularly used for Radio advertisements. During that period, I got acquainted with Hamid and Amin Sayani, one doing English and the other doing Hindi advertisements for the commercial service of Radio Ceylon. During my studies and later working in Film Industry, there were often talks about the Radio Ceylon programs, with people with similar tastes. I could listen to radio Ceylon during evenings only as during morning hours my uncle with whom I used to stay, performed puja.

When married in 1955, I had my own home and the first big purchase was a “Pye” Radio and it became a routine in the morning to listen to Radio Ceylon. I still have that note-book, which was kept by the side of the radio and where me or most of the time my wife used to jot down the lyrics of the songs that we liked. Later on, another of my big purchase was ‘Akai M-8’ reel tape recorder and I used to record morning ‘Puraane Filmon ke Geet’ regularly on it. This continued till 1993, when I lost my dear wife and soon I went abroad. During my stay in states up to 2008, I was cut-off from my addiction of listening to Radio Ceylon, as during that period there was no Internet broadcast. On my return after those fourteen years I was in tears to find hundreds of my reel tapes spoiled due to Bombay weather. I tried to salvage whatever recordings I had on those ever breaking tapes that I could play and prepared a huge collection of MP3s on my Computer and External hard drives.

Now a days, my routine is to wake-up with the alarm set at 06:45 AM, start Internet SLBC with audio recording and listen to those divine golden period music till 08:00 AM, laying in my bad. So, after the association with Radio Ceylon for so many years, my days start with happy nostalgic feelings and thanking Almighty for all the good things including happy married life.

Pardon me if I bored you with my personal story, but I could not stop myself writing about my attachments with Radio Ceylon, to the only person working there whose phone number and e-mail address I have.”

Now let us enjoy this seemingly a child song in Lata’s real child voice. We will enjoy the next presentation song in this series from 1946 film ‘Subhadra’.

In most sites they have mentioned as Lata Mangeshkar sang her first Hindi song as a playback singer with Aap Ki Sewa Mein (1947).
Though she started in 1945.

Nitinji,

This song , she sang for herself and not as PLAYBACK .
That way she sang in Marathi films before also but not as playback.

D Samant

Nitinbhai,
The explanation was given to me from Shri Viswas Nerurkar the compiler of ‘Gandhaar’, Lata’s songs from 1945-89. Lataji started recording songs from 1945 for Hindi films and little earlier for Marathi films. Aapki seva mein song was recorded in 1945, as her first Hindi Film song, but the film was released in 1947. According to HFGK and other Reference books the songs are presented according to the year of release and than alphabetically within that year.
I hope that clears the mist.

Bharat ji,

A correction.
HFGK lists films strictly on the basis of release date, irrespective of whether the film is released or not, or released whenever.
