Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 28

MEHMAAN (1942) was a social film which was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Ishwarlal, Shamim, Rama Shukul, Mubarak, Kesari, Bhagwandas etc. There were 12 songs in the film penned by D N Madhok (11) and Pandit Indra Chandra (1) which were set to music by Khemchand Prakash. Two songs from the film has been covered in the Blog.

The film was released in 1942, a year which made Shamim, also known as Shamim Bano (1914-1984), one of the popular actresses of the 40s. From the filmography of Shamim, it is observed that she started her acting career in 1939 with ‘Baaghi’ and ‘Inaamdar.’ In 1941, she got associated with Ranjit Movietone and worked in ‘Dhandora’ (1941). In 1942, she did 4 films for Ranjit – ‘Return of Toofaan Mail’ (jointly with Wadia), ‘Mehmaan’, ‘Fariyaad’ and ‘Armaan’. In 1943, she worked in films like ‘Gauri’ and ‘Bansari’ for Ranjit. In 1944, she left Ranjit and did A R Kardar productions’ ‘Pehle Aap’ (1944) and ‘Sanyasi’ (1945). She also worked for Bombay Talkies’ ‘Jwar Bhata’ (1944) and ‘Nateeja’ (1947) and for Filmistan’s ‘Sindoor’ (1947). Her last film in India was probably ‘Toote Taare’ (1948). She worked in about 25 films made during during pre-partition days.

After Partition, Shamim migrated to Pakistan and acted in a couple of Urdu films made there. Her last film in Pakistan was probably ‘Hanste Aansoo’ (1950) produced and directed by Kamal Pasha whom she married and retired from the film industry.

Shamim was a niece of singer-actor Khurshid Bano. Unlike her aunt who sang for herself in all the films she worked in India, Shamim sang for herself in films made up to 1943. Thereafter, most of the songs picturised on her were sung by playback singers like Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Amirbai Karnataki, Parul Ghosh etc.

I am presenting the third song ‘ye mere bhaiya ye unka dil hai’ from the film ‘Mehmaan’ (1942), sung by Shamim. The song was penned by D N Madhok. It is a teasing song in which the sister (Shamim) teases her brother (probably Ishwarlal) for having an eye on the black mole on the fair face of her bhaabhi (probably Madhuri).

Enjoy this teasing song.

I think you mean Arunji, or may be Sadanandji, the author of this article, who both reside in Mumbai. I reside in UP itself, like you. 🙂
