“Mashaal”(1950) was directed by Nitin Bose for Bombay Talkies. The movie was based on a Bankimchant Chattopadhyay story called “Rajni”. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Summovie itra Devi, Kanu Roy, Ruma Guha, S Nazir, Moni Chatterji, Zal Merchant, Nana Palsikar, Neelam, Gauri Devi, Niharika Devi, Sati Devi, Shivraj, Arun Kumar, samar Chatterji, Krishnkant, Cuckoo, Dubey etc in it.

This movie was one of those movies that would have been forgotten with time, but this movie became memorable for the song Upar gagan vishaal which helped launch the career of Manna Dey as a playback singer.

This movie may have helped many other artists as well. I have read in wikipedia that S D Burman, disillusioned with the Bombay film industry had left this movie midstream and had decided to board the first train back to Calcutta. I do not know whether this is a fact or not.

This movie had many names that were at the beginning of their careers and who would go on to make their marks in future. For instance, Bimal Roy was the editor of this movie. Ruma Guha, the second female lead of this movie would go on to marry Kishore Kumar in the years to come.

Though all the songs of this movie are available, I am surprised to know that the story of this movie is not available anywhere online, including in this blog. Hint ! Hint ! 🙂

The movie had seven songs in it. Six of these songs, including the Manna Dey blockbuster song has been discussed in the past.

The seventh and final song from the movie is a lively folk music based song. HFGK describes this song as a duet sung by Shamshad Begam and Arun Kumar. On listening to this song, I detect many other voices. I feel that the voice that sings the first couple of lines is none other than Manna Dey himself, who also served as the assistant music director to S D Burman. There are quite a few other male voices as well, but I have not been able to identify them. I suspect that even the voice of Geeta Dutt is audible at a place in the song. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the voices. For the time being, I will go with the voices as mentioned in HFGK. The colour coding on the lyrics may leave something to be desired because of my inability to differentiate among various singers.

It is easy to identify the actress lip syncing in Shamshad Begam’s voice. She is Cuckoo, the fore runner of Helen, who was at the peak of her prowess in those days.

I am not able to identify any other actors in the picturisation. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them. The cast includes a name Arun Kumar (spelled as Aroon Kumar), who could well be the same as the male singer Arun Kumar credited in the song.

The song is penned by Kavi Pradeep. It is quite a refreshing change to see Kavi Pradeep pen naughty lyrics of this folk music based dance song where the lady, who has turned sweet sixteen, is nervous at the prospects of going to her sasuraal. What a delightful song ! This is a song that was the least known of all the songs of this movie to me, but now I find it the most wonderful song from the movie as far as I am concerned.

With this song, “Mashaal” joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
