Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 49
——————————————-

SHOHRAT (1949) is one of those films of the 1940s about which not much information is available. I am surprised that I have not been able to find any poster or advertisement materials about the film even though one of the well-known film personality of that time, K Amarnath was associated with the film as the director who was also the director of the the box office successful films like Gaon Ki Gori (1945), ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1947), ‘Baazaar’ (1949) etc.

The main star cast included Jayant, E. Billimoria, Sofia, Padma Banerjee, Ameer Bano etc.

The film had 12 songs (including one multiple version song) penned by Madhup Sharma and Gulshan Zama. However, the distribution of individual song among them is not available. All the songs were set to music by Aziz Hindi. One song from the film has been covered in the Blog.

I am presenting the second song from the film to appear in the blog. This is a multiple version song. The song is ‘mehmaan ban ke aaye thhe armaan ban gaye’. The first version is a solo sung by Mohammed Rafi. The second version is a duet sung by Mohammed Rafi and Hameeda Bano. The lyrics for both the versions are the same.

The lyrics of the song would suggest the germination of love between hero and heroine of the film. In the duet version of the song, the love has blossomed and they are ready for the next stage of love, that is ‘take off into sustained growth’ – a phrase the economists would like to use. In keeping with the Hindi film stories, there would be lot of obstacles – both within and outside the family – for love to culminate into an union in the same way as it normally happens in a developing economy on a growth path which is threatened by internal as well as external threats.

The song is a typical Mohammed Rafi song. The last antara of the second version has been sung at a high pitch. I feel that Hameeda Bano has not been able to keep pace with the higher pitch of voice of Mohammed Rafi.
