Hullo to all in atuldom

Its been a while since I wrote a post for the blog. No that is not so. I have made notes in my mind by the dozen in the last couple of months and typed out two of them sent it across to the Head of the Posting Department of our blog. Unfortunately they didn’t get posted as the Head of the department was awaiting a special post by his trusted Lieutenant for what is now being termed as “artificial” milestones (as Atulji likes to call them) but a special is a special and other things can wait for them is my opinion. I hope I can hear or rather see nods in agreement of my point of view.

September is a rather special month in that we have birthdays of some supreme talents of Bollywood –K.N.Singh, Naseem Bano, Sadhana, Pyarelal (from Laxmi- Pyare team), Uttam Kumar, Shakti Kapoor, RIshi Kapoor, D.N. Madhok, Rakesh Roshan, Asha Bhonsle (how did we let that birth date pass without a special post, investigation needed), Bhupen Hazarika and for more names to this list please refer the anniversaries page of our blog?. And I had songs in mind for each and every person on the birthday list. I even wrote a post for my dearest Asha Bhonsle (though I don’t remember if it was one of the two that I sent to our Head.) we did have a special post for MS Subbalakshmi’s 100th birth anniversary and one for Prem Chopra’s 81st. Thank you to Sudhirji for them.

We cannot let 26th September go by without remembering the debonair actor who would have turned 93 today. When we type his name on Google we get so many links to various sites. One of them has put up a list of 12 lesser known facts about this actor. But for us here in ASAD these facts are by-heart as they have been repeated in almost every post about this actor. So do I need to spell them out here again?
Do I need to say?

1) He was born Devdutt Pishorimal Anand to an advocate father.

2) He was a graduate of English Literature from Government College Lahore.

3) He got his big break when actor-producer Ashok Kumar spotted him around Bombay Talkies.

4) He was best friends with Guru Dutt and they exchanged shirts and ideas.

5) He thrived on playing the modern urban man with grey shaded characters.

6) To impress his lady love he modeled himself on her favourite Hollywood actor Gregory Peck.

7) He married his costar Kalpana Kartik (this I know) in the lunch break of a movie they were shooting (that I didn’t know).

8) He is the only Hindi film hero to have been the leading man to Bengali actress Suchitra Sen in two movies- Sarhad and Bambai Ka Babu (I didn’t know this also).

9) Dilip-Raj- Dev were the reigning superstars of the 1950s and early 60s; and they have acted as Dev- Dilip and Dilip- Raj combo but the Dev- Raj combo never happened.

10) Zeenat Aman’s career sky rocketed after his directorial Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

11) He discovered Tina Munim in 1978.

12) Zeenat Aman, Hema Malini and Rakhee were his favourite heroines in the 70s. Rakhee says “Devsaab had only friends on enemies”

I am sure that all the above 12 facts are common knowledge to 90% of Atulites; (I didn’t know a few is my anadipan!)

I became aware of this actor through the movies that were aired by Doordarshan in the late 70s when my chachu bought the first television in the family. I thought we should have a song of his with Zeenat Aman as I loved the pairing; I don’t remember which was the first movie of theirs that I ever saw. But then I also loved the Dev-Hema combo as much as the Hema- Rajesh combo. As I scan the List of movies page of our blog I find many possible songs for this two pairings viz: Dev- Hema and Dev-Zeenat.

Two weeks ago I had gone to see a program where in Kabir Bedi was in chat with Hema (gorgeous even today) Malini. Both of these actors have costarred with Dev Anand in the 70s. They spoke of his love for Kathmandu and Nepal. They had very fond anecdotes about him. About how he used to sit on the sets in between shots –never in a relaxed pose, always ready to jump out of the seat for the next action needed of him. How he was very particular about his post dinner walks of an hour, this was related by Kabir Bedi, etc, etc. Since I spoke of Zeenat Aman- Dev Anand in Nepal I think we should also have a song in the same picturesque locales. And I suppose it will be apt to have a song from the movie Kabir Bedi spoke of- Ishq Ishq Ishq.

Ishq Ishq Ishq was a 1974 movie directed and produced by Dev Anand.

The story in brief is as follows:-Dhun (Dev Anand) comes from a wealthy and talented family. His desire is to see the world on his own, and he sets upon this travel. He comes upon an Inn called Five Daughters, run by Pahar (Premnath). He decides to stay there for a while. He meets the daughters, and falls in love with the one named Pooja (Zeenat Aman). Pooja also reciprocates his love, and both hope to marry soon. Pahar does raise objections, but they soon are overcome. Just when the marriage is being planned, the family comes to know that both Pooja and Dhun are related, and the relationship is that Dhun is Pooja’s maternal uncle.

The star cast was impressive with a small brigade of lovely ladies- Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, Komilla Wirk, Nadira, Baby Padmini, Poonam Sinha (she had not yet become Sinha.) Plus there were the regulars Jeevan, Premnath, Sudhir, Iftikar, Gautam Sarin and Kabir Bedi and Shekhar Kapoor in small roles. The music department was headed by Devsaab’s favourite RDB and Anand Bakshi penned all the songs. And who else but Kishore Kumar was his voice in this movie. So here is the song (which also has Asha Bhonsle as the female voice for all the grown up girls) with which we can remember Dev Anand on his 93rd birth anniversary; a song that shows all his typical mannerisms and scarf and hats.
