New year 2017 begins today (1 january 2017). This song, song number 12750th in the blog, happens to be the first song post for the year 2017.
We have quite a few informal projects going on in the blog with almost missionary zeal. One of these projects in including songs from movies that are not yet represented in the blog. With 3574 movies already represented, we theoretically have another 2000 or so movies that are not yet represented. In reality, songs from many of these movies are not available and so the actual number of additional movies that will finally end up finding representation in the blog will be in hundreds and not in thousands.
I have set up my own mechanism of monitoring the progress of this project. I have a yearwise list of movies and I can look at a glance which movies are represented in the blog and which movies are not yet represented. I can also see at a glance how many songs that movie has and how many of these songs have been represeted in the blog. This list is useful for me for this “project debut movies” as well as for the “project YIPPEE” where we try to post all songs of movies.
I am keen to reduce the gap between number of movies that were released in a year and number of movies of that year represented in the blog. The gap is quite big for earlier years where songs from just a few movies are available. Situation improves for years of 1950s and 1960s. The year with the narrowest gap is 1961. 104 movies were released in that year and as many as 97 movies of that year are represented in the blog. Sudhir Ji had taken up this project of reducing the gap and he had taken up the decade of 1960s.
I as well as Mr sadanand Kamath have informally taken up the decades of 1940s (and also 1950s) for a similar exercise. The narrowest gap for a year of 1940s is for 1945. 74 movies were released in 1945 and as many as 56 of these movies have been represented in the blog. The as yet unreprested movies of 1945 are obscure movies that are not available on YT. So we are required to upload songs from these movies ourselves if we want to introduce these movies in the blog.
“Champa”(1945) is one of the as yet unrepresented movies of 1945. This movie was directed by Barkat Mehra for Shorey Pictures, Punjab. The movie had Manorama, Asha Posle, Hari Shivdasani, Majnu, salma, Zahoor Shah etc in it.
HFGK mentions nine songs for this movie. DEtails of singers and lyricists of these songs are not available. There were two music directors in the movie namely Anupam Ghatak and Lachchi Ram, but distribution of songs among them is known only for three songs.
Here is the first song from “Champa”(1945) to appear in the blog. This song, that “eulogises” dipsomania in typical Hindi movie style is sung by a female voice and a male voice that I am unable to identify (though they sound familiar). We may well be able to identify the voices, but it is a pity that we have no way of identifying the lyricist of this fun song. And we do not know about the music director of this song wither.
I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.
With this song, “Champa”(1945) makes its debut in the blog. As mentioned earlier, this movie is the 57th from 1945 and 3575th overall to make its debut in the blog.
I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year 2017. Let our musical bandwagon go on and on in this year as well.
Song-Bahaar peene ki aayi hai muskura ke pee(Champa)(1945) Singers-Unknown Female voice, Unknown Male voice
Lyrics
bahaar peene ki aayi hai
muskuraa ke pee
muskuraa ke pee
jee aur jee
jee aur jee
kisi ki mast nazar
haan
kisi ki mast nazar se nazar mila ke pee
pee aur pee
pee aur pee
raseela jaam jahaan ko dikha dikha ke pee
raseela jaam jahaan ko dikha dikha ke pee
zamaane bhar ko ye naghma suna suna ke pee ee ee
kya
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
saaqi se muhabbat hai
saaqi ki khushi pee hai
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
pee ke hum sab jo chale jhoomte mainkhaane se
jootiyaan khoob padin sabko bade thhaane se
haan aan aan
inspector ne poochha tere deewaane se
kyun samajhta nahin ulloo mere samjhaane se
to maine arz kiya huzoor
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
saaqi se muhabbat hai
saaqi ki khushi pi hai
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
piye ja aap bhi
auron ko bhi pilaaye jaa
piye ja aap bhi
auron ko bhi pilaaye jaa
bana de mast hamen
haan
bana de mast hamen
mastiyaan lutaaye jaa
jo so rahi hai tamanna
usey jagaaye jaa
hamen pilaaye jaa
jo so rahi hai tamanna
use jagaaye jaa
kisi se aankh mila kar
ye geet gaaye jaa aa aa
kya
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
saaqi se muhabbat hai
saaqi ki khushi pee hai
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
r r r r
raat ko phir
beewi se jhagda ho gaya
aji kya bataayen
kya tamaasha ho gaya
haan aan aan
baaton baaton mein ladaai ho gayi
aur hanste hanste haathha paayi ho gayi
jootiyaan
jootiyaan khaayin to hosh aane laga
aa aa aa
aur tera deewaana ye farmaane laga
kya
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai
saaqi se muhabbat hai
saaqi ki khushi pee hai
main to nahin peeta hoon
maine to nahin pee hai

The above film title reminds me of my father who had the habit of singing champa man madhe bharli jara from the original song sundara mana madhe bharli jara a song from V Shantaram’s film Ramjoshi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGKa5TyGAfI
We and my uncles used to tease him about Champa thinking that she may be his college friend.
At a later stage he revealed It was the name of his sister who died in her infancy! What an anti-climax
