Today’s song for discussion is from the film Sindbad the sailor-52 ( also called Sindbad Jahaazi ).

Sindbad is a character from the stories of “Arabian Nights “or “One Thousand and One Nights”. The original name Sindbad was changed to Sinbad by American film makers and this created some confusion in the minds of people about its spelling. The stories of Sindbad, along with that of Alibaba, Alladin, The 3 Apples, The 3 princes and the 3 princesses etc were very popular all over the world. This may be one of the very few books in the world which was translated in most languages, across the continents. For hundreds of years these stories have entertained the young and the old all over the world.

Sindbad, the fictional sailor, Hero of the story is of Middle East origin. He was supposed to live in Baghdad. He voyaged in the seas east of Africa and south of Asia. He encountered fantastic adventures by going to Magical places, meeting Monsters and experiencing supernatural phenomenons. Originally Sindbad was not a part of the 14th century manuscript of Arabian Nights. It is a later addition and first appeared in the collection in 1937 in Turkey. The first English translation of Arabian Nights was by Richard Burton ( not the actor ) in 1885.

The frame story of Sindbad is- In the reign of Haroon Al Rasheed, a poor porter ( coolie) feels tired and sits on a bench in the garden of a rich person. There he complains to the God why there are rich persons who do nothing and poor persons who toil all day. The rich person hears this and calls the porter inside his house. After providing him food etc. they start conversation and learn that names of both are same – SINDBAD. The rich Sindbad tells him how he became so rich and describes his 7 sea voyages one by one. Thus starts each voyage story in details and in First person. Surprisingly, Sindbad’s is the only story about a sailor’s voyages in the entire 1001 stories of The Arabian Nights !

In India, the first silent film on Sindbad was made in 1930, by Sagar Film Company titled “Sindbad the sailor “Actor Raja Sandow was the Hero of the film. The first talkie film on Sindbad, surprisingly, took a long time to come. It came only in 1946 as “Sindbad the Sailor”-46. Stut film actor Prakash was the Hero and Leela the Heroine.Alibaba and Alladin had taken a lead over Sindbad in film making. Personally, I like Sindbad first, then Alibaba and then comes Alladin in that order.

Coming to today’s film “Sindbad the sailor aka Sindbad Jahaazi”- 52, it was produced by Balwant Bhatt under the banner of Deepak Pictures and was directed by his own brother Nanabhai Bhatt ( father of Mahesh Bhatt ). The cast of the film was Naseem Bano, Ranjan,Nirupa Roy, Pran,Bhagwan,Yashodhara katju, Azeem,Urmila, Shakeel etc etc. Lyrics were by Anjum Jaipuri, Shyam Hindi and Chand Pandit. There were 8 melodious songs and the Music Director was Chitragupt.

Though Chitragupt had become independent composer with Lady Robinhood’-46, he had continued to work as the assistant to S.N.Tripathi. He continued composing music independently to films like Fighting Hero-46,Toofan queen-46,Jadui Ratan-47,Shake hands-47, Stunt Queen-47 etc. These were all action stunt films of C grade. A highly educated,ex college professorChitragupt was not happy with his career. In those days, even a graduate was seen with respect in film line. Here Chitragupt was not only a Graduate but a Post Graduate ! many people in this line felt pride in putting their degrees after their names..like Surendra,B.A; LL.B., Moti,B.A. ( actually he too was a postgraduate,M.A.), or composer Firoz Nizami,B.A. etc. Initially even Chitragupta’s name was advertised as Chitragupt,M.A.. But in the posters of action films like ” Toofan Queen” etc, this credit used to look very odd. so he stopped it.

After many stunt films, he got one social film, Kishore Sahu’s ‘Hamara Ghar’-50, but as it was a low budget film, he did not get any advantage and the film too was a flop. So, like his mentor S.N.Tripathi, he too continued rotting in stunt and Mythological films. He used to sing also in chorus. He had begun his musical career by singing in a chorus of a film by H.P.Das. Finally, this film, “Sindbad the sailor’-52 ended his misery. Though all songs of the film were popular, the duet of Rafi and Shamshad, “Adaa pe jhumate hue, dilon ko choomte huye ” had a Lion’s share in making his name. In later years this song used to feature often in Radio Ceylon’s farmaish programmes.

Same year, he was assisting S N Tripathi for his film, “Alladin and the Jadui chirag”-52. Tripathi had used Arabian style music. Similarly even Chitragupt used Arabian Music style for his film ‘Sindbad the sailor’-52. Shamshad Begum was the lead singer in both the films. Chitragupt had sung 2 songs in Alladin…, but he sang only one song in Sindbad the sailor. This is today’s song, ‘Dharti azaad hai’ along with Rafi and chorus. Another duet of Rafi and Shamshad, “zindgi sanvar gayee” was also very melodious. Chitragupta sang songs in many films like Tarang,Navdurga, Toote khilone, Manchala, Raj darbar, Tilottama,Sati Naag kanya etc etc. His best known song is from film ‘Manchala’-53.. “Bhagwan tujhe main khat likhta par tera pataa malum nahi”. However my favourite song of Chitragupt is “Jaijaikaar karo maataa ki” from the film Navdurga-53.

In those days Nirupa Roy did roles in Mythological films depicting a goddess, usually Maa Parvati, but in this film she had done a villainous role along with Pran. This was probably the only role of this type she ever did in her career ! This was in sharp contrast to her screen image till then or even in later years.

The lead pair of Beauty queen Naseem Bano and Ranjan was as misfit as Coal and Chalk ! This was Naseem’s last leg of career. Her best was already over and now what remained was just survival. Ranjan had become a Hero only because of his expertise in Fencing. As far as looks, he was not comparable with even other stunt Heroes, forget about the chocolate Heroes of the Main cinema. However he was one of the most highly educated and knowledgeable persons of the industry !

Today’s song, ‘Dharti azzad hai’is one of the very melodious songs of the film. Chitragupt was the king of melody and his music was always enjoyable. Unfortunately, he did not get the support of any famous Production House or Banner for a long time in his career, like some other less gifted composers in the industry. That is Lady Luck !
