Missing Films of 1960s – 28
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ever so often, I go searching for a song, an obscure song from an obscure film. I do not know what I will find, because the film is unfamiliar and the songs are unheard. I just dive into the list of songs sitting in my hard drive, with apprehensions, knowing not what will be discovered. And almost always, when I return to surface, I am gasping for breath, not that I was not able breath while in the depths of my collection, but because of wonder and joy on having laid my hands on a fabulous gem of a song that I had not heard before. And going by the awareness factor and availability online, the same may be true for friends and readers who may quite well also be listening to such gems for the first time.

The film cannot get more obscure than this – ‘His Highness’ from 1964. And the music director – well he seems to have appeared like a shooting star and then disappeared, never to be seen again. The name is Bhanu Thakur, and search as I might, I am not able to lay hands on any bit of information about him. Even Pankaj Raag’s book (‘Dhunon Ki Yatra’) simply documents one sentence, stating that he has composed music for one film. Now, it can’t get more obscure than this.

The lyrics are by BD Mishra. Well this name is not totally unfamiliar. Our blog already features 26 songs written by him. However, again, not much is known about him too. BD Misra, or Bhagwat Dutt Misra, has been mostly confined to religious and historical films, and a major part of his work is with music director SN Tripathi. Homi Wadia gave him his first break with SN Tripathi in the Basant Pictures film ‘Shri Rambhakt Hanuman’ (1948). His active career lasted till the mid 1970s, and he has written for 45 films during this period.

Listening to this song, one wonders; here is a songwriter who has been ‘typecast’ for religious films and now we hear such a sweet romantic song written by him. Ways of the industry; all that can be said.

‘His Highness’ is a stunt film directed by Anand Joshi, for the banner – Neeti Films, Bombay. The way the star cast reads, it appears that Helen has played the lead female role in this film. The list of actors for this film includes Helen, Jairaj, Chand Usmani, Arvind, Krishna Kumari, BM Vyas, Maruti, Ratnamala, Chaman Puri, Tuntun, Lakshmi, Rehana, RS Dubey, Kalla and Miraajkar amonst others. There are 5 songs in listed for this film. Two 78 rpm records were released, implying that we can expect at least 4 songs from this film are available. Very interesting to note that all the five songs are sung by Asha Bhosle.

OK, so a debut film, and a debut music director today. And a very delightful hummable song that has been lost under the sands of time for more than five decades. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Naina Waale Ye Kaise Dorey Daale (His Highness) (1964) Singer – Asha BhosleLyrics – BD Mishra, MD – Bhanu Thakur

Lyrics

naina waale
ye kaise dorey daale
dil pe mere tu ne kaisa jaadu kiya
naina waale
ye kaise dorey daale
dil pe mere tu ne kaisa jaadu kiya
naina waale ..ey ..ey ..ey

mausam bahaar ka hai
mere singaar ka hai
chanda ki chhaaon bhi hai
bheegi bheegi raat hai
haathon mein haath le le
thoda qaraar de de
nainon se nain miley
tab to koi baat hai
tere bina kaise mera laage jiyaa. . .
jaadu kiya
naina waale
ye kaise dorey daale
dil pe mere tu ne kaisa jaadu kiya
naina waale ..ey ..ey ..ey

kaisa hai haal mera
kya hai sawaal mera
mujh se na pooch
meri aankhon se pehchaan le
masti mein jhoom lein aa
taaron to choom lein
nazron ki baat
mere kahe bina maan le
jaise maine maange bina dil de diya
jaadu kiya
naina waale
ye kaise dorey daale
dil pe mere tu ne kaisa jaadu kiya
naina waale
ye kaise dorey daale
dil pe mere tu ne kaisa jaadu kiya
naina waale ..ey ..ey ..ey
